BEIJING, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Tuesday called for more efforts to optimize land use in order to save resources and further economic restructuring.     Li made the remarks during an inspection to the Ministry of Land and Resources (MLR). As the most populous country in the world, China has been faced with shortages of land, water, energy and minerals, and the shortages were worsened by rapid economic growth, he said. The MLR said the census was going smoothly and had collected preliminary data from local authorities. BEIJING, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan met here Friday with his Uzbekistan counterpart Elyar Ganiev, pledging to promote the healthy and sustainable development of economic and trade ties.     Wang conveyed congratulation on the success of the eighth session of the China-Uzbekistan Economic and Trade Cooperation Committee.     He said since the two countries forged diplomatic ties, high-level exchanges were frequent and the cooperation in such areas as economic and trade, energy and security were ever expanding. FUKUOKA, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said Wednesday his visit to Japan had "a positive result" and "achieved what he had expected."     Xi made the remarks before leaving the southern Japanese city of Fukuoka, the last stop of his Japan visit, for South Korea to continue his four-country Asia tour.     During a meeting with Fukuoka Prefecture Governor Wataru Aso, Xi said he held fruitful talks with Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama in Tokyo and exchanged views with representatives of all Japanese circles. He expressed the wish that Fukuoka, which boasts experience in ecological and high-tech industry and has cooperation with several Chinese cities in building environmentally efficient cities, would continue to make a positive contribution to the cause of environmental protection in China.     Aso said Fukuoka and China had maintained sound cooperation on trade and environmental protection. He cited Kitakyushu city as a successful model of environmental protection. The governor said he hoped China and Fukuoka would further environmental protection cooperation.     Xi arrived in Fukuoka Wednesday afternoon from Tokyo. He will also visit Myanmar and Cambodia later in his tour.

BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States will more vigorously promote cultural exchanges between the two nations and their people, and send more students to each other's country to study, a joint statement said here on Tuesday.     "The two sides noted the importance of people-to-people and cultural exchanges in fostering closer China-U.S. bilateral relations and therefore agreed in principle to establish a new bilateral mechanism to facilitate these exchanges," the statement said.     In recent years, the number of students studying in each other's country keeps rising. Currently there are nearly 100,000 Chinese students studying in the United States.     "The U.S. will receive more Chinese students and facilitate visa issuance for them," the statement said.     In China, there are about 20,000 American students studying. The United States will launch a new initiative to encourage more American students to study in China. "Over the coming four years, the U.S. will send 100,000 students to China, and the Chinese side welcomed this decision," it said.     China and the U.S. agreed to expedite negotiations to renew in 2010 a cultural exchange accord, and jointly hold the Second China-U.S. Cultural Forum in the United States at an appropriate time, the statement added.
