Consumer goods giant Unilever has committed to halving its use of new plastic by 2025.The maker of Ben & Jerry's and Dove announced the target on Monday. If the company meets its goal, it will use no more than 350,000 tonnes (386,000 tons) of new plastic each year from 2025, down from around 700,000 tonnes (772,000 tons) in 2018.To get there, Unilever will offer more reusable and refillable packaging, and sell more "naked," or unwrapped, products. The company will also use more recycled plastic in its packaging."There is a lot of plastic pollution in the environment. And the fact of the matter is — too much of it carries our name," Unilever said in a statement.Unilever has been developing new ways to deliver its products, which the company says are used daily by 2.5 billion people in over 190 countries. It has tried selling ice cream bars without plastic wrappers, as well as cleaning product concentrates that allow shoppers to refill bottles instead of buying new ones.The company is also participating in an industry initiative called Loop. As part of that project, it's selling refillable deodorant sticks made from stainless steel. The deodorant lasts one month on average and the packaging can be reused an estimated 100 times. Other consumer goods producers including Procter & Gamble, Nestlé, PepsiCo, Danone and Mondelēz International have also signed on to Loop.The push by consumer goods makers to reduce their use of plastic comes amid mounting pressure from governments for them to act. Consumers are also increasingly aware of the damage that's caused when plastic enters the environment and especially the world's oceans.Massive amounts of plastic have piled up in landfills, with some emitting greenhouse gases and contributing to global warming as they degrade. Plastics are expected to outweigh fish in the ocean by 2050.Alan Jope, the CEO of Unilever, said in a statement that the huge scale of the problem demands a "fundamental rethink" in the company's approach to packaging and products."It requires us to introduce new and innovative materials, and scale up new business models, like reuse and refill formats, at an unprecedented speed and intensity," he added.The company previously committed to making all of its plastic packaging fully reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025. It wants recycled plastic to make up at least 25% of its packaging by the same year. Both efforts should help the company meet its commitment to reduce its use of new plastic.Learning how to recycleUnilever is also working to ensure that more of the plastic that it does use is recycled. The company said Monday that it wants to collect and process more plastic packaging than it sells by 2025.To meet that goal, the company will invest in waste collection and processing. Unilever will also purchase more recycled plastics for use in its own packaging, and it will participate in programs where it directly pays for the collection of its own discarded packaging. 3003

Dinosaurs are no longer roaming the earth, but their tracks live on. In the foothills on the Front Range of Colorado, a story can be told from pieces of the past left behind.Dinosaur Ridge has been ranked by a panel of esteemed paleontologists as the no. 1 track site in all the U.S. One of those world-renowned paleontologists is Martin Lockley, who has spent his life studying dinosaur tracks.“You're looking at a snapshot of an ancient environment," Lockley says.In an area of just a few hundred square feet, 330 dinosaur tracks have been discovered. However, the land was very different 100 million years ago. Lockley says the giant prehistoric animals weren't a mile high in the Rocky Mountains.They were on the beach at sea level in an environment very similar to present day Gulf of Mexico.“We like to joke and call this beach-front property a 100 million years ago," Lockley says.The soft, wet, sandy land made conditions ideal for preserving tracks."If they're walking on wet sediment, like a beach or a mud flat or the shores of a lake, and it dries out, it becomes hard like concrete," Lockley explains. "And the next time there's a flood washing in more sediment, it will bury those tracks without them being eroded away."Experts believe three different dinosaurs made their mark on this patch of land. Lockley says it's possible they were migrating along what used to be a coast. It's clear the western U.S. was a popular place to be, because there are more than 120 dinosaur track sites from Kansas to Utah. Martin suggests part of the reason is less vegetation in these states means more fossilized rock is exposed.But if there are so many track sites, what makes Dinosaur Ridge the top of all track sites? Executive Director Jeff Lamontagne, with Friends of Dinosaur Ridge, says there was a list of criteria the panel considered."How many tracks there are, the variety of dinosaurs seen in the tracks, the importance of the tracks, the clarity of the tracks, the accessibility and number of visitors," Lamontagne explains.Accessibility is the main reason Dinosaur Ridge has become so highly regarded."It's right outside a major metropolitan area, and there's a major road just a quarter mile from here," he says. "It's easy to see this compared to most other dinosaur track sites in the United States and in the world."People can get so close to the tracks; in some places you can even touch them. Although the tracks have been well-preserved for millions of years, their current exposure to humans and the elements could make them erode over time.Thankfully, with current technology, scientists can scan the surface and re-create it as 3-D permanent record. They also plan to build a cover to protect the land.However, Friends of Dinosaur Ridge believe the hands-on part of the site is important for kids to continue learning about the planet's past. Eleven people have died so far in 2019 while climbing Mount Everest, a behemoth of a mountain that towers 29, 029 feet above sea level. This is more than twice the number of people who died climbing Everest in 2018, which saw only five deaths that season.But it's not the number of deaths that some may find shocking — it's the reasons behind them. Only two of this season's Mount Everest deaths can be attributed to falls.So what's killing climbers ascending the mountain? It's primarily exhaustion and altitude sickness, and something called "the death zone."Seasoned climbers call any part of the mountain above 26,000 feet "the death zone" because there is only so long a human can survive at that elevation due to lack of oxygen. "Even when using bottled oxygen, supplemental oxygen, there's only a very few number of hours that we can actually survive up there before our bodies start to shut down," mountain guide Adrian Ballinger told CNN. And, unfortunately, the wait at the summit of Mount Everest plays a role in these deaths because the longer someone is at that altitude, the more severe they feel the effects from lack of oxygen and exhaustion. During the week beginning May 20, crowds of climbers became stuck in a queue to the summit. When this happens, climbers aren't eating, drinking or sleeping and continue to use up vital oxygen, which can lead to death.British climber Robin Haynes Fisher was one of those who had warned of the dangers of overcrowding."With a single route to the summit, delays caused by overcrowding could prove fatal so I am hopeful my decision to go for the 25th will mean fewer people. Unless of course everyone else plays the same waiting game," he wrote in a captioned Instagram post on May 19.He died after suffering from what appeared to be altitude sickness at 28,215 feet, while returning from the summit on Saturday.Altitude sickness occurs when people are at high elevations for an extended period of time. It can happen anywhere that's 8,000 feet above sea level or more. There are three types of altitude sickness. From least to most severe, they are: acute mountain sickness, high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) and high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE). The symptoms for all three types are similar (headache, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath), but HAPE is accompanied by a buildup of fluid in the lungs and HACE, the most severe type of altitude sickness, occurs when there's a buildup of fluid in the brain.So how can climbers avoid the same deadly fate as the 11 who died? Simply put — be careful. Acclimate as slowly as you can to increased elevations, drinks tons of water, rest and immediately start descending if you feel symptoms of altitude sickness.CNN contributed to this story. 2782

  

Ditching the alcohol without ditching the taste sounds impossible, but more brewers are getting on board with non-alcoholic beer.Miller Coors is one of the most recognizable beer companies that are changing things up. They just launched their non-alcoholic beer, Coors Edge."We are a beer company and we are going to be a beer company for the future but we are trying to meet our consumers’ changing tastes,” said Matt Hargarten with Coors.Non-alcoholic beer is nothing new, but liquor store owner Mark Crowder remembers the old version."It used to taste like sugar sweetness trying to turn itself into alcohol,” said Crowder. “It was horrible."Companies are now stepping up the flavor game, like Heineken, Clausthaler and Brew Dog, along with smaller breweries.Non-alcoholic beer begins its life as alcoholic beer. Hargarten says taking alcohol out of beer is extremely technical and expensive.For some people, they think non-alcoholic beer is pointless, but others feel it’s healthier. Non-alcoholic beer has less calories and carbs. Some have as low as 26 calories per can or bottle.But, is it really healthier? We spoke with a dietitian who says it’s healthier for people watching their weight. But, if you like drinking the real deal, she says if women only have one a day and men only have two beers a day, that’s healthy too. "The non-alcoholic trend is growing in the United States,” said Hargarten. “In the last year, it grew 8%."It’s safe to say this trend is not going away anytime soon. 1510
