OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. — A Michigan judge has ruled a 15-year-old girl will stay in a juvenile detention center for violating probation after not completing online coursework.Grace had gotten into legal trouble last year, and as one of the conditions of her probation, she had to attend school and complete classwork, which her mother tells ProPublica her daughter was doing until the pandemic hit.ProPublica, a nonprofit publication, brought attention to Grace's story."This is a student with disabilities who was struggling with remote learning situation and ended up in detention because of that," said Jodi Cohen, a reporter with ProPublica Chicago."In school the student gets one-on-one support from teachers and is allowed extra time to complete assignments because of (ADHD) and other disabilities," Cohen said. 825

Oklahoma teachers say they have reached their breaking point over pay and school funding and may walk off the job next month.Galvanized by a growing social media campaign, teachers wanted competitive pay to attract and keep teachers in the state. Teachers were hoping for a ,000 raise with House Bill 1033, collectively called the Step Up Oklahoma Plan, which looked to increase the tax on tobacco and gas.However, that bill was voted down in the state House because it didn't get the 75% approval needed to pass, according to Oklahoma Department of Education Superintendent Joy Hofmeister."It was soul-crushing," Hofmeister said.Because of that, and a handful of other failed bills in the last two to three years, teachers are now actively discussing a strike, on the heels of a statewide strike by public teachers in West Virginia."What spurred this momentum was so many teachers across the state are at their wit's end," said Teresa Danks, a third-grade teacher in Tulsa who is also the founder of the nonprofit Begging for Education. "No bills have been passed in favor of teacher pay or funding, the frustration and low morale has continued to grow. We're losing teachers like crazy to other states."One of the authors of HB 1033, Republican Sen. Kim David, did not reply to CNN's request for comment. The legislative assistant for the other author, Republican Rep. Kevin Wallace, said the request for comment was forwarded to the state speaker of the house. OCEANSIDE (KGTV) - A big problem the homeless population faces is finding a safe place to bathe, that's why businesses are teaming up to help. Jordan Verdin has spent the last decade working with the homeless population in the North County. As a photographer, he’s always taking pictures and sharing their stories on social media. Part of Verdin’s love of taking pictures of the homeless is allowing them the opportunity of, “being seen and being heard but sometimes they might not want to be seen because of how they look so what we want to do I provide something that will eliminate that barrier”. He tells 10News, “One of the consistent needs shared with me is needing a place to shower”. After hearing that need repeated time and time again, he’s decided to work another project. Verdin mentioned the project to Oceanside business owner Jeanette Linnborn. Linnborn is the owner of coffee shop, Stay Golden. When Verdin brought the idea to Linnborn she jumped on board immediately. She tells 10News, “I was so excited about that I was like okay we can totally do this”. The shower trailer is made up of two sides, each equipped with a bathroom and shower. Verdin tells me 125 people will be able to shower daily. The shower trailer will stand as a liaison to help homeless back on their feet, “something as simple as a shower and a haircut just makes them feel human again” Verdin tells 10News. The cost of the shower trailer is ,000 and they have just reached the halfway point. There’s still a GoFundMe page set up to help them get the other half of funding. 1575

OCEANSIDE (KGTV) - It’s been nine months of physical therapy since a great white shark attacked Keane Webre-Hayes. “My love of the ocean is much more than my fear of sharks.” Webre-Hayes tells 10News. He’s been determined to get back into the ocean. While it’s been a long process, he finally made it out spearfishing. Josh Fleming owns Meric Spearfishing in Oceanside, he has been helping get Webre-Hayes ready to dive back into the ocean. “He gave me a gift certificate saying whatever it costs and he got me all geared up.” Fleming gave Webre-Hayes a new diving suit, speargun and other gear to help him prepare for his spearfishing adventures. Webre-Hayes was attacked by the great white shark during his first time lobster diving. He underwent hours of surgery, got one thousand stitches and has continued months of physical therapy. He’s been through intensive therapy at Equinox and Nakoa in Carlsbad. “I love the ocean it’s my second home basically.” Webre-Hayes tells 10News. The shark broke the top of his humorous, tore off his rotator cuff, broke the scapula in three different places and he’s missing parts of his deltoid and lateral muscles. Webre-Hayes tells 10News, “It was a gnarly bite and its crazy that I’m going to be throwing out the first pitch at the Padres game.” Before spearfishing came baseball. He was a left-handed pitcher until his left side was attacked back in September. Nine months later, he’s living out his dream of throwing out the first pitch at the Padres game Tuesday night. “My wish came true just didn’t find the best way to get it.” Webre-Hayes is looking forward to the evening surrounded by his team from Rady Children’s, his physical therapists and Fleming. 1713

OCEANSIDE, California— Oceanside lifeguards are warning beachgoers of multiple shark sighting off Oceanside Pier Friday.Lifeguards said they received multiple reports of an unknown species of shark, measuring about 12 feet in length, about 100 yards offshore on the south side of the pier just after 12:30 p.m.Two rescue vessels and a drone were sent out to the shark's last reported location, but no shark was located.The waters have been cleared for swimmers and surfers for about 1 mile north and 1 mile south of the area, according to lifeguards.Waters will remain open Saturday, barring any other reported sightings.While shark sightings are rare along San Diego County's coastline, lifeguards are asking beachgoers to keep an eye out.A 13-year-old boy was attacked by what is believed to have been a great white shark in September off the coast of Encinitas, just south.Keane Hayes was attacked while lobster diving at Beacon's Beach.
