SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A family of five was displaced after a fire erupted in their City Heights kitchen Tuesday.The fire began in the kitchen of a home in the 3700 block of 41st St. According to San Diego Fire-Rescue Capt. Juan Flores, the fire appeared to begin accidentally in the cooking area as food was being prepared.Six units responded, keeping the fire isolated to the kitchen of the residence, Flores added.The family, two adults and three children, were displaced by the fire. The Red Cross is currently helping them.No other units on the property were damaged. 576

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A handful of parents attended a meeting with San Diego Unified School District officials, after lead was found in drinking water at Garfield Elementary.Parents were notified of the discovery last week when the school made calls and sent letters.“It seems like the infrastructure is kind of old and replacing that stuff seems to get longer and further down on the back of the list,” said parent Jared Stodelle.Tuesday, a doctor and an SDUSD representative answered parents questions at the elementary school. They broke down the water sampling reports and gave parents tips and advice about lead exposure.52 water fixtures on campus were tested. Three were above the district action level of 5 parts per billion (ppb), while one was above the federal action level of 15 ppb. According to the district, the fixture above the federal action level tested at 17.28 ppb, but had been out of service for an entire year. They say no students had any access to that specific fountain.“Now that it's been brought up to me, I'm going to look into it a little more and that's why I was trying to understand what the levels were and what they actually meant,” said parent James Smith after attending the informational meeting.As soon as the results came back, the fountains were secured and taped off, parents were notified, and an informational parent meeting was scheduled.According to SDUSD Facilities Communications Supervisor, Samer Naji, the district now has three options on what to do next: either repair or uninstall the fixture completely, put in a lead certified water filter, or install new plumbing.In the meantime, children will be given bottled water.Parents who spoke to 10News say they were happy with the way the school and district notified them and took immediate action.“We give them credit because if you see a problem, you take care of it,” said Stodelle. “You don't want to hide it from anybody especially the students and parents.”At the meeting, the doctor told parents concerned about the potential lead exposure to schedule an appointment with their child’s physician to request a blood screening for lead. SDUSD’s Nursing and Wellness staff is prepared to assist families who aren’t sure how to request a screening. 2259

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two additional suspects were arrested today in connection with a shooting that left a 20-year old man mortally wounded in a Bay Terraces-area neighborhood 16 months ago.Ethan Leland Apan, 28, and Kevin Herrera, 26, were jailed this afternoon on suspicion of taking part in the slaying of Joaquin Ruiz of San Diego, according to police.Another suspect, 26-year-old John Orozco, was taken into custody last Wednesday on suspicion of murder in the case, Lt. Andra Brown said Shortly after midnight on July 13, 2019, patrol officers responding to a report of a possible traffic accident found Ruiz unconscious and suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body in a vehicle alongside the roadway in the 7000 block of Paradise Valley Road.Paramedics took the victim to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police have not disclosed what led investigators to identify Apan, Herrera and Orozco as suspects in the case and have revealed no suspected motive for the slaying.``The District Attorney's Office is currently reviewing this case, which is still an ongoing investigation,'' Brown said. ``We will not be making any further comments or providing additional information at this time.'' 1216

  

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two pregnant women in San Diego County have been hospitalized due to flu complications, the county's Health and Human Services Agency announced Wednesday. A 40-year-old woman spent 16 days in the intensive care unit and a 30-year-old woman spent nine days in the ICU. Both women were unvaccinated, in their third trimesters and contracted influenza A. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, pregnant women have some of the highest risk of developing flu complications if they remain unvaccinated. “That is why they're one of the groups for which vaccination isextremely important," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "Changes in the immune system, heart and lungs during pregnancy make pregnant women (and women up to two weeks after delivery) more susceptible to severe illness from the flu, which could require hospitalization." Officials from the CDC and the Health and Human Services Agency suggest that pregnant women receive the flu vaccine at any point in their pregnancy. However, the nasal spray flu vaccine is not recommended for pregnant women. Flu cases in the county ticked up during the week of Dec. 9-15, according to the county's weekly influenza report. Confirmed flu cases totaled 290 compared to 199 the previous week. The county's overall total of confirmed flu cases is at 940, well behind the 1,641 cases at this time last flu season. Everyone 6 months or older is recommended to get the flu vaccine each year. In addition to pregnant women, health officials strongly advise the vaccination for people with a heightened risk of serious flu complications, like people older than 65 and people with chronic conditions like asthma and diabetes. County residents can get vaccinated at doctors' offices, retail pharmacies, community clinics and the county's public health centers. Residents can also call 2-1-1 or visit the county's immunization program website, sdiz.com, for a list of county locations administering free vaccines. 2021

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A global recruitment company tells 10News there is a concern that the healthcare system is going to be over-run by patients.It brings up questions whether San Diego County has enough nurses to staff hospitals and medical centers if the coronavirus pandemic goes on for an extended period."The problem that we're seeing now, post-pandemic and coronavirus, is that those nurses can't flock to any one area to support people because the problem is, they have to support locally where they are," said Jon Griffith with the recruitment company GQR. Griffith explained there were supply and demand issues with nurses before COVID-19. Now travel nurses, who would typically fill the void are needed in every state, and not necessarily available to travel."We're seeing people called out of retirement," he said. "Nurses and physicians alike being requested to come out and support. Essentially what we're trying to do at GQR is to tap into those resources or new grad nurses, retired nurses, wherever we can to give that local support to these hospitals to try and mitigate that risk."Griffith told 10News the hospitals they've spoken with are aware of potential challenges and are gearing up to make sure people have their healthcare needs met."They are heroes alright," Griffith said. "We see this all on social media. They are on the frontlines still giving great patient care and focusing on that continuity of care and that right there is what this is all about. But nurses have that fear of being understaffed and hospitals are really trying to rise to that challenge right now."10News asked healthcare providers across San Diego County how they will maintain staffing levels as nurses get sick or burned out, and if they have enough staff to backfill any vacancies.Here are the responses we got back.Sharp Healthcare:Yes, definitely a consideration given the unknowns around how long the COVID-19 outbreak will last. Out of extreme caution as we respond to the challenge of coronavirus, employees who may have been exposed to the virus will remain at home for a 14-day observation period. We are able to manage this in part with fully licensed or certified seasonal contract staff. Our nursing leadership is developing scenarios to better understand what roles may be needed in the future and how we staff up or cross-train clinicians to fill those potential gaps. We are looking at how our clinic and outpatient staff might be utilized in the hospital setting. We have established a labor pool of staffing that will better enable us to meet the needs of increased hospitalizations. We are also actively assessing roles to evaluate where there may be crossover of skills among nursing disciplines, which can effectively broaden our availability of nurses. If we don’t, where will that manpower come from?We have strong partnerships with several traveler and agency firms to assist in urgent placements. We are partnering with the state and the California Hospital Association in loosening restrictions on out-of-state licensed clinicians and student nurses as well. 5325
