A Wisconsin man is accused of trying to buy a lethal dose of a radioactive substance on the Internet to try and kill someone. Justin Tolomeo, Special Agent in Charge of the Milwaukee Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation said in a news release Jeremy Ryan, 30, of the Town of Madison has been charged with attempted possession of radioactive material with intent to cause death.Ryan allegedly attempted to buy the lethal dose in March and October of 2018. He was arrested on Tuesday. Ryan, who was dubbed “Segway Boy” faced multiple felony drug charges in 2016. He got the nickname after he was seen riding a Segway around the state capitol in 2011 taunting Republican lawmakers. He also attempted a congressional run against Paul Ryan in 2012. The attempted possession of radioactive material with intent to cause death charge carries a maximum term of life in prison. The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney's Office in Wisconsin’s Western District.  1010

Aeroméxico airline confirmed on Tuesday that a flight has crashed near Durango, Mexico, and the airline was evaluating the damage.The incident took place near General Guadalupe Victoria International Airport in Durango, Gov. José Rosas Aispuro Torres wrote on Twitter. Torres added that emergency officials were responding to the scene. Aispuro confirmed that there were no reported fatalities stemming from Tuesday's incident.A spokesperson for the airline told ABC News that some survivors were being taken to area hospitals, while some were able to walk away from the crash. Video from the incident showed rainy conditions, and some smoke billowing near the airport. The airline said that 100 people were on board the Embraer 190 plane that was taking off from Durango en route to Mexico City.  840

ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) - When students in one East County school district start their school year, they may have the option to be in a learning pod, organized by the district.When Gov. Newsom's orders pointed to distance learning for local schools, Alpine Union School District's superintendent, Rich Newman, says the feedback from parents came quickly. Though the district took pride in their virtual classes, parents were worried."Parents had deep feelings of concern for the future of their children and their potential learning loss from distance learning," said Newman.Those specific concerns are familiar ones: access to computers and internet access, students' social isolation and distractions, and parents' work schedules. So officials in the school district, which includes nearly 1,700 students from pre-K to 8th grade, came up with a plan."We are replicating the normal school day our students would normally be in," said Newman.Newman says they'll be offering up space for free at schools, from gyms and classrooms to outdoor spaces for 12-student learning pods. Each pod will be supervised by one parent every day. The parents would divvy out their shifts within the group."Parents have to fill out a facilities use agreement, just like a sports league ... that would allow them to go on campus. They'll have to sign a waiver," said Newman.The district won't be just providing space. Students will have access to computers and tutors, both in-person and online. Newman says the pods will follow state COVID-19 guidelines, including social distancing and mandatory masks for students in the 3rd grade and higher."This allows our parents to return to work, and know that their child has a safe to be and support for their distance learning," said Newman.The district also plans to expand its current before-and-after-school care into a 10-and-a-half hour day, with similar learning pods. Between the two programs, they hope to reach 100% of families needing help."We hope to leave our students and parents with a sense of normalcy ... and ensure there will be no loss of learning ... So far, the response has been overwhelming," said Newman.Class is set to begin August 24.Newman says the district has consulted with attorneys who say the district's plans do fall within state guidelines.In a statement, a county spokesperson says, "Our current understanding is that this type of program would not be allowed under current state guidance. A wildfire burning in Arizona, just northeast of the Valley, is now the most massive fire actively burning in the country, according to officials.The wildfire has already demolished more than 114,000 acres, and it is just five percent contained, as of Thursday morning.The good news is no homes nor businesses have been destroyed, but some worry it is just a matter of time, as evacuations have been implemented in multiple towns.Fire crews say the wildfire has spread so rapidly and is difficult to contain because of the heat, low humidity, terrain, and high winds.The threat snuck up on Tonto Basin homeowners like Robyn Hill."I really wasn’t prepared for it. I thought the fire was too far away, and you are just kind of in disbelief," said Hill, who got the evacuation order Monday.Hill said she rushed home from her hair salon business in Payson once the alert came across her phone.She packed up the RV with her husband and two dogs, and they quickly left town."So when you got two hours to get your stuff and go. It would help if you were a little more prepared," she said. "I packed the bread and the peanut butter, but forgot the jelly."While the jelly makes for a good joke, leaving home was no laughing matter."You kind of shed a few tears as you leave the house because it’s my home, it’s my little paradise," said Hill, who tells KNXV she had just finished adding a pool and re-doing her garden and yard during the pandemic slowdown.While Hill and others are evacuating their homes, the Red Cross has been setting up shelters."[Monday] we had over a dozen people check-in," said Jim Gilloon, with the Arizona Red Cross. "We don’t just let them walk in. We do a screen test, we take their temperature, and we ask him questions, and then they are clear to come in."At the shelter, the people forced from their homes can get a meal, information, and then the Red Cross helps find them a place to stay for the night."It’s a wildfire season. So we are prepared," said Gilloon. "The fire is spreading, and there is no containment. So we are looking at several days, a week maybe."Many Arizonans from Punkin Center, Sunflower, and Apache Lake are now sleeping in motels.Casie Malinski though, stayed behind in her Tonto Basin home Tuesday to care for her many animals."This morning I took my older children into Payson and dropped them off with their things," said Malinski. "I have full faith in our hotshots and fire crews who are out here."As 440 firefighters desperately try to squelch the inferno, hundreds more are praying for them."I think everybody is just terrified and hoping they will get it out in time before the residences are lost," said Hill. "Let’s stop it on the highway, please.
