A new study out of a pediatric medical center in Chicago suggests that young children do not only spread COVID-19 more efficiently than adults, but they could be major drivers in the pandemic as schools start to reopen.The report was published at the end of July and examined concentrations of COVID-19 in the nasopharynx, or the upper region of the throat that connects nasal passages. According to the results, children ages 5 and younger who develop mild to moderate symptoms have 10 to 100 times as much COVID-19 in their nasopharynx as adults.“This is a very complex issue involving not just the virus, but everything else,” said Dr. Kwang Sik Kim, director of pediatric infectious disease at Johns Hopkins University Hospital. "We don’t have any real data to indicate to schools what they should do, what is the best recipe they need to follow.”The study raised concerns about the erratic behavior of children and how it could play a factor in the virus’ spread, reading, "Behavioral habits of young children and close quarters in school and daycare settings raise concern for SARS-CoV-2 amplification in this population as public health restrictions are eased. In addition to public health implications, this population will be important for targeting immunization efforts as SARS-CoV-2 vaccines become available.”“Don’t, under any circumstance, even think about opening that school for in-class instruction until you’ve got the virus under control,” said Lily Eskelsen Garcia, president of the National Education Association.Eskelsen Garcia teaches 39 6th-graders in Salt Lake City and says unless the infection rate of a community is below 5 percent, as outlined by the CDC and WHO, school districts should not even consider opening for in-person instruction.Currently, the infection rate in the United States is 7.8 percent."If you open a school before you get the infection rate under control, you will turn that school into the community’s super-spreader,” said Eskelsen Garcia.“Make a decision for today based on the information available today, and then act differently when you have data tomorrow. A video recently released shows a school bus getting swept away by floodwaters in Texas.The incident happened Oct. 16 near Austin after a driver drove past a barricade and attempted to cross a flooded area.The bus gets caught up in the water and floats down a creek before the driver completely loses control.A 12-year-old student was a passenger on the bus as it finally came to rest on the side of a few trees.Emergency responders rescued the driver and the student.Officials report the driver has since been fired and is facing charges. 552

A Minnesota school security guard admitted to authorities on Wednesday that he lied about an active shooting after he accidently shot himself, St. Paul, Minnesota police said in a statement The department reported that Brent Patrick Ahlers, 25, was arrested for filing a false police report. St. Paul Police said that Ahlers told investigators that he was handling his gun when it accidently discharged, sending a bullet through his shoulder. He originally claimed that while working a guard shift at St. Catherine University that he was shot in the woods by a suspect. St. Paul Police said that the incident tied down vast resources, including 55 officers, four canines and a Minnesota State Patrol aircraft. “Last night I was talking to you about an incident that shocked the community,” Sgt. Mike Ernster told the Star-Tribune in a news conference. “It had basically 1,800 students held captive in their dorm rooms at St. Catherine’s, it had residents of the Mac-Groveland and Highland Park communities fearing they would be hurt in their homes.” 1107

A US Navy helicopter crashed onto the flight deck of an aircraft carrier in the Philippines Sea on Friday, injuring personnel on board.The MH-60 Seahawk hit the flight deck of the USS Ronald Reagan shortly after takeoff around 9 a.m., according to a statement released by the Navy's Seventh Fleet. All injured are in stable condition and are being evaluated by medical staff.The Navy did not say how many people were injured but that some "will be medically evacuated ashore" without specifying a location.An investigation has been opened into the cause of the crash, according to the statement.The incident occurred during routine operations in the Philippine Sea, which spreads north and east of the Philippines.The aircraft carrier "remains fully mission capable" and normal flight operations to support the mission of "support and security and stability in the Indo-Pacific Region" have resumed, the Navy said.Last week the Nimitz-class, or, nuclear-powered aircraft participated in the International Fleet Review near South Korea's Jeju Island.In May 2017, the USS Ronald Reagan began sea trials in the Pacific before replacing the USS Carl Vinson near the Korean Peninsula.The 1,092-foot Reagan carries a crew of 4,539 and is equipped with roughly 60 aircraft, according to the Navy. A Phoenix girl who was severely burned in March was visited by Grammy-winning artist Taylor Swift on Saturday. Eight-year-old Isabella and her father were injured on March 17 following an accident involving flammable liquids in north Phoenix. Swift stopped by the Maricopa Integrated Health System burn center in Phoenix to visit Isabella as she continues to undergo treatment. Swift is scheduled to perform at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale on Tuesday at 7 p.m.   522
