SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California roads have some of the worst drivers in the entire country, according to a new ranking.Finance website SmartAsset reports that California ties with Missouri to take third on the list for states with the worst drivers.In order to rank states, the site looked at the percentage of drivers with insurance, the number of DUIs per driver, the average number of deaths per miles driven and how often residents Google terms like traffic ticket or speeding ticket.California ranked 12th for DUIs per thousand drivers and 11th for percentage of uninsured drivers. The Golden State also ranked 32nd for number of people killed per 100 million miles driven.It may give some comfort to know that California wasn’t ranked first. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Communities along San Diego's coast have seen an increase in graffiti and tagging as the weather warms up and people flock to the beaches.Most recently, a wall along the sand in Solana Beach was tagged twice, frustrating people who surf and swim nearby."It's a public beach, there's no reason someone should be desecrating it like that," says Andres Gomez, who surfs in Solana Beach regularly. "I wish everyone would be more respectful of the space that we share.""I just think of my tax dollars being wasted," says Solana Beach resident Darla Dressler. "Somebody's gotta come paint it. So either the HOA's paying it or the city's paying it."Earlier in May, 10News reported on a home in Pacific Beach that was hit by graffiti. But in May alone, there were 1,989 reports of graffiti. That's nearly a third of all the reports in 2019 so far.It's also well above the average month in 2018, which had 19,541 total reports, or about 1,628 per month.While the city tries to respond to each complaint, several local community groups have taken it upon themselves to clean up the tags. The Pacific Beach Town Council hosts regular graffiti clean up days. Their event in May removed more than 700 tags according to a Facebook post. 1579

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities eradicated a massive illegal marijuana grow operation discovered near a popular trail in the Rancho Pe?asquitos area.According to Drug Enforcement Administration officials, San Diego police officers were called out to an area of the Del Mar Mesa Preserve on Tuesday regarding a homeless encampment. That’s when they discovered more than 2,000 marijuana plants.The plants were 5- to 7-feet tall and were ready to be harvested. The street value of the crop is estimated to cost as much as .5 million, the DEA said.The plants were hidden below the canopy of the natural vegetation.“The way that it was set up, it was obvious people were living on that property, would lead us to believe, if we had to make a guess, it was most likely cartel-related,” DEA officials said.They called it a sophisticated operation, adding it was rare to see an illegal grow of its size growing in a city so close to homes.“In this case, we think it's more likely they found a fire hydrant or some sort of a city water source that they were able to tap into,” DEA officials said. “We couldn’t find that in this case, but we think that’s the most likely scenario.”Authorities said there was also an extreme fire danger associated with the grow. They found trash in the vicinity, as well as two propane tanks and open flame burners for cooking in an area with tall, dry vegetation.Authorities have not found anyone connected to the illegal operation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California public health officials say the Southern California region has run out of ICU bed capacity.The region, which includes San Diego and 10 other counties, hit 0% capacity, as the state reported 52,200 more coronavirus cases on Thursday. California officials say regional ICU capacity is calculated based on the total number of adult ICU beds minus neonatal and pediatric ICU beds. Adult ICU capacity includes staffed ICU beds and ICU surge beds.San Diego County said Thursday that it was currently at 16% ICU capacity after adding 2,604 new virus cases. There are 295 ICU cases in the county out of 1,186 hospitalizations. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Cheer on floats, marching bands, and colorful cars will roll down the streets of Hillcrest and Balboa Park in July for the annual San Diego Pride Parade. The parade, which is San Diego’s largest single-day civic event, attracts some 250,000 people every year. Marching begins at the Hillcrest Pride Flag at University Avenue and Normal Street. The parade moves west down University, turns south on Sixth Avenue, left onto Balboa Drive, and ends at Quince Drive. The parade is free for spectators, but you’ll want to bring cash to buy water or food from one of the businesses along the route.
