SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Developers behind Horton Plaza's planned redevelopment have reached a deal with Macy's, allowing the project to continue.Stockdale Capital Partners announced the agreement reached with Macy's to allow the downtown San Diego project to move forward. The massive overhaul will see the nearly vacant mall turned into a mixed-use tech campus.Terms of the deal were not disclosed. In October 2019, Macy's filed a lawsuit to stop Stockdale Capital Partners' project. The San Diego City Council unanimously approved reducing Horton Plaza's previous retail deed restriction and the project in May 2019, with the project slated for completion in 2021.“We are making a long term commitment to downtown San Diego and plan to quickly deliver The Campus at Horton as an urban hub for San Diegans to gather and a catalyst for thousands of high paying tech jobs, defining the future of downtown,” Steven Yari, managing partner at Stockdale Capital Partners, said in a release.The developer envisions the 700,000-square-foot campus will become home to about 3,000 to 4,000 new jobs. 1372

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Firefighting cameras are blanketing California, shattering its goal of installing 650 cameras across California by 2022, thanks to the efforts of a UC San Diego professor and his team.The camera system, called ALERTWildfire, came from a need to confirm the ignition of a fire, and coordinate assets to be the most efficient and safe for the community.Geology Professor Neal Driscoll at UC San Diego is the Co-Director of ALERTWildfire and said just a couple of years ago it was a slow process confirming a fire sparked in the county."We’d have to send an engine to a mountaintop or launch an aircraft to verify ignition," Driscoll said.That wasted valuable time. ALERTWildfire allows fire command centers to find and assess a blaze with a few clicks on a computer.Cal Fire Captain Thomas Shoots said they look for key information from the cameras, "really just trying to hone in on where this fire is, what its potential is and who might need to be evacuated."The system launched in 2017 and now San Diego has 35 cameras across the county.The cameras pan, tilt and zoom on command and have a time-lapse function."The technology isn’t just good situational awareness, it’s also using that data and that information in real-time to evacuate people and save some more lives," Shoots said.Driscoll said they are continuing to grow the program, "locally I think we’ll cap out at 45-50."Shoots said they're working to grow to more than 1,000 cameras across the state by 2022 and Driscoll hopes to expand to other states like Colorado and Idaho.Driscoll advises the public to get familiar with the website, so in case of an emergency, you can be aware of your surroundings and evacuate safely.Driscoll also advised the public to RAP: Reduce risk, Activate your alerts, and Practice your plan. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- For the first time since mid-July, several San Diego County businesses were allowed to resume indoor operations.Under Gov. Gavin Newsom's new tiered system for businesses reopening during the pandemic, several more industries can welcome customers inside, but with modifications and or capacity limits.Danny Daniels owns Barbers Den in Chula Vista. He was thrilled to have customers back inside Monday afternoon."This is my passion, I love barbering, I love everything about barbering," said Daniels, who has been cutting hair for nearly 20 years."I truly believe something as simple as a haircut can go a long way in making someone feel good," he added.Austin Campbell is the managing partner of Sola Salons Studios in San Diego. He owns and helps run 15 locations.Campbell is among the owners who traveled to the state capitol to protest the governor's second shut down back in July."On the first shut down everybody said, this is going to be tough, but it's the right thing to do, everyone just hunkered down and said we gotta get through it, but the second shut down, people took it; personally, they thought this was uncalled for, unfair, completely arbitrary and not researched," said Campbell.Many stylists said the governor's decision to allow salons to move services outside made no sense."The whole offer of outside hair, to be honest with you, was kind of a slap in the face of our industry," said Campbell, adding that inside was safer and more sanitary.Everything that the state recommended we could do, really pretty much was in complete contradiction to what everyone has been taught and been practicing for their entire careers," said Campbell. Salons don't have capacity limits, but social distancing and mask mandates must still be followed. Campbell said the impact of the shutdowns has been far more than just financial."A lot of people are not just financially struggling, but mentally, emotionally, professionally, the beauty industry is more than just a job; it's a true career and identity," said Campbell.Campbell said his salons employ roughly 600 people. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Fixes are coming to elevators in a 14-story high-rise in downtown San Diego where senior tenants have faced challenges performing everyday tasks. But not soon enough for many.Some residents of the 65 and older Tower Apartments community have missed important appointments and had difficulties running errands, like trips to the grocery store, because of elevator outages.Some residents told 10News it's a long-running issue.RELATED: Seniors left with one elevator in 14-floor?San Diego buildingThe building is undergoing renovations - which residents say they appreciate. But they say the upgrades don't make it ok to shut down one of the two elevators and leave them with an elevator that they describe as unreliable at best. "Everybody is extremely upset," resident Carol Clark said. "And the thing is we don't seem to be getting many answers."One neighbor in a wheelchair broke down in tears during our interview. "It's people's safety," he said. "Not just mine, but everybody else."Shortly after running the story on 10News, management with the apartment complex sent a letter telling residents one of the elevators under renovations should be running by the end of June. After that, the other elevator that has had problems will be upgraded.Management said they will also schedule input meetings with residents for next week. 1372
