SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego's Metropolitan Transit System announced today 40 local high school students who took part in an annual essay contest were awarded new laptop computers and backpacks.Students from more than 70 high schools around the county entered the MTS and Coca-Cola Laptop Scholarship Contest, which required the applicants to submit an essay on ways to get more students to use public transit such as lowering student transit passes.The winning students, from 27 schools, received a 15.6-inch HP Touch-Screen laptop and a Northface backpack that doubles as a laptop case. MTS officials honored the winning students on Friday at the 12th and Imperial Transit Center."It was great that winners came from so many campuses,'' said MTS CEO Paul Jablonski. "Their essays presented convincing ideas. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Gulls coach Dallas Eakins was Monday named the coach of its NHL parent team, the Anaheim Ducks.Eakins coached the Gulls throughout their four seasons in the American Hockey League, guiding them to a 154-95-23 record and three Calder Cup playoff berths. They reached the Western Division finals in the recently concluded 2018-19 season.The Gulls had the best record in the AHL's Pacific Division since its inception in the 2015-16 season.The 52-year-old Eakins called his hiring as the Ducks' coach ``a tremendous honor for my family.''``I am truly humbled,'' Eakins said. ``It was a privilege to serve as head coach of the San Diego Gulls during our first four seasons and I look forward to build off that success here in Anaheim.''Eakins replaces Randy Carlyle, who was fired on Feb. 10. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego State University reported 25 new cases of COVID-19 Sunday, bringing the total number of cases to 1,072 since Aug. 24, the first day of instruction for the fall semester.The new totals reported by Student Health Services reflect numbers as of 6 p.m. Saturday.Of the students living on campus, 385 have tested positive and students living off-campus totaled 666 positive cases, health services said. A total of eight faculty or staff members have tested positive and 13 "visitors," people who have had exposure with an SDSU-affiliated individual, have tested positive.The number of confirmed cases was 1,030, with 42 probable cases.The information is based on cases reported to Student Health Services by an individual or by a public health official. As more private labs are administering tests, there is a possibility that not all cases are being reported to Student Health Services.For privacy reasons, SDSU does not report names, affiliations or health conditions of students, faculty or staff who test positive for COVID-19 unless a public health agency advises that there is a health and public safety benefit to reporting such details. 1176
