SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Basic needs can be challenging to meet for homeless families or those living in shelters. As schools resume for students, distance learning can be even harder. Father Joes Villages is helping homeless students thrive this school year."We work with a population that is customarily at a disadvantage and has greater challenges, especially during these times of the pandemic," says Deacon Jim Vargas.It's been a challenge for the kids who aren't able to go to school. "In a sense, distance learning has isolated them even more," says Jennifer Ryan with the Therapeutic Children's Center at Father Joe's Villages."They don't have the financial resources, technological resources, other resources like those families that have homes," adds Vargas.The Therapeutic Children's Center provides a space for students to do their work."We have about 100 children that are in school. That's kindergarten all the way to 17-year-olds," says Ryan.Laptops and tablets are usually given to students by their schools. Father Joe's Villages makes sure they have access to the internet, school supplies, and more.Deacon Vargas says without the right intervention, these students are likely to repeat a grade or worse. "We know statistically that they are four times more likely to be homeless in adulthood."Father Joe's Villages has launched a new distance learning initiative to continue to provide resources to students. 1430

Enrique, a federal contractor who did not want to use his last name, created a GoFundMe campaign to cope with the lack of funds. He asked for ,000 to cover his salary gap, posting a picture of his family to encourage donations. “This shutdown really affects me because once the shutdown ends I will not get back pay as a contractor,” Enrique said. Christian Rodriquez is a corrections officer at Metropolitan Correctional Center detention facility in downtown San Diego. His work is deemed essential, so he is working without pay."I'm going to have to borrow from family and friends to pay my mortgage, or get a loan," said Rodriguez.Some institutions, including Navy Federal Credit Union (NFCU), are offering no-interest loans to help workers through the crisis. Other banks, including Chase and Wells Fargo, encouraged affected customers to reach out for assistance.While some loans may have fair terms, government employees are warned to beware of so-called predatory lenders during the shutdown. Documents show that Hunter is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday at 10 a.m. for a "change of plea hearing." Hunter said he would plead guilty to one count of misusing campaign funds in an interview with San Diego TV station KUSI. "My trial was set for January 22 -- that's not going to happen now. Tomorrow, on Tuesday, I'm going to change my plea to guilty. I think it's important not to have a public trial for three reasons, and those three reasons are my kids ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — County officials closed a portion of La Jolla's coastline after a sewage spill Friday morning.The closure was issued for the area of Playa Del Norte in Windansea, near the 7000 block of Neptune Pl., after a sewage spilled before 9:30 a.m.Seven year La Jolla resident Marc Hirschfield said he was walking his dogs Saturday morning when he noticed the yellow warning signs dotting the beach and asked lifeguards what happened. He said they told him "there was a manhole cover that overflowed and raw sewage spilled into the ocean."Lifeguards told 10News it was a storm drain to blame in the same area.The spill has been contained, according to the County Department of Environmental Health, but there still may be impacts to water quality after 130 gallons of sewage entered the beach area.Warning signs have been placed in the area until samples of the ocean water indicate the water is safe for recreational use. It's not clear how long the area will remain closed.Some beach-goers ignored the signs, others, like surfer Cole Reiner just didn't see them. "Well I went out into the water. I mean contaminated doesn’t sound great, but I was out there and it says may cause illness so that’s not great," he said. Lifeguards couldn't say when the beach would reopen. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- At least nine parked vehicles has their windows smashed with a bat in Oak Park early Monday morning. The vandalism happened on the 5600 block of Redwood Street around 1 a.m. Car windows along Redwood Street and Thorn Street were smashed. A witness told 10News he was returning home when he noticed shattered pieces of glass on the ground and spotted two suspects trying to get away in a white car with no license plates. The man says he followed the suspects down Thorn Street before they got away. Police are searching for the suspects and say nothing appears to have been stolen from the vehicles. 628
