SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspect was arrested Monday morning after climbing onto the roof of a La Jolla home, where he remained for just over an hour before surrendering to SDPD officers.Dispatchers received a call around 4:45 a.m. from a woman who reported hearing a person on the roof of her home in the 1500 block of Coast Walk, off Torrey Pines Road just east of Prospect Place, San Diego police Officer Tony Martinez said.Officers responded to the home and the woman pointed them to where she had seen the suspect, Martinez said.Police entered the home to make sure the suspect hadn't made it inside, then they spotted him on the roof and ordered him to surrender, the officer said.The suspect surrendered and was taken into custody around 6:10 a.m., Martinez said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An ex-con who opened fire in the Gaslamp District two years ago, wounding an off-duty sheriff's deputy and a bystander, was sentenced Wednesday to 71 years to life in state prison.Ray Pitoau, 39, was convicted last month of two counts of assault with a firearm for the Aug. 7, 2017, shooting that injured Deputy Jason Philpot, who was walking through downtown with his two brothers following a Metallica concert at Petco Park. Also injured was bystander Vladimir Shvets, a passerby in San Diego for a convention.Pitoau was also convicted of a lesser charge of assault on the deputy's younger sibling, Joshua.Prosecutors said Philpot and his group walked past Pitoau, who got into an argument with the deputy's sibling on Island Avenue near Sixth Avenue just after 1 a.m.RELATED: Man convicted of assault with gun in Gaslamp shooting that wounded deputyPitoau testified that he pulled out a gun in self-defense because a group of men, including Jason Philpot, were advancing on him. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Margaret Hunter, who pleaded guilty along with her husband -- former Rep. Duncan Hunter -- to illegally spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign funds for personal purposes, was sentenced Monday to eight months of home confinement, slated to begin immediately, and three years probation.The former East County congressman's wife, who also acted as his campaign manager during much of the time the pair improperly spent campaign funds on personal expenditures, pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge more than a year ago.Duncan Hunter pleaded guilty about six months later, then resigned from Congress the following month. He was sentenced in March to 11 months in federal prison, but has yet to serve any of his term as the COVID-19 pandemic led to a postponement of his self-surrender date. He's not expected to report to prison until possibly as late as January.Margaret Hunter's attorneys argued for an out-of-custody sentence involving home confinement and prosecutors agreed, citing her agreement to cooperate with investigators and the manner in which prosecutors say her husband directed blame at her when the allegations became public.Prosecutors did seek to have her home confinement delayed until January, as they stated it would be more punitive at that time, with the COVID- 19 pandemic currently keeping the majority of the general public confined to their homes.However, U.S. District Judge Thomas Whelan opted to begin her term immediately.Margaret Hunter made a brief, tearful statement to the court prior to sentencing, saying "I continue to take full responsibility. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspected hit-and-run driver who allegedly struck and gravely injured a bicyclist last month in the Midtown area was arrested in a shopping center parking lot in Kern County, it was reported Wednesday.San Diego police identified the suspected driver last week as Mauricio Flores and also released the name of a woman, Jessica Bailey, suspected of riding in the van with Flores.The pair were in a 2005 Dodge Caravan with Georgia license places that struck a bicyclist around 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 21 on West Washington Street at India Street in the Midtown area, police said.RELATED: Bicyclist sustains life-threatening injury in hit-and-runThe victim suffered a life-threatening head injury and remains in the hospital, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.In video shot by a witness and released by San Diego police, the driver could be seen stopping after the collision and getting out of the van.The video then showed the driver and passenger going to the injured man on the side of the road before the driver tugs the bent bicycle out from under the front of the van and sets it aside. He and the female passenger then got back into the van and drove away.A second passenger in the van has not been identified by police and no description of the man has been disclosed.An off-duty CHP officer who saw a flier about the collision spotted a suspicious looking van bearing CA exempt plates, typically used by state-owned vehicles, while riding his motorcycle in the Lake Isabella area over the weekend and notified the local office, CHP Officer Robert Rodriguez told the Union-Tribune.The officer assigned to that area -- roughly 35 miles northeast of Bakersfield -- went looking for the van early Tuesday morning and found it in a Vons parking lot, this time with Vermont license places, Rodriguez told the newspaper.
