SPRING VALLEY, Calif (KGTV) -- As campuses like Steele Canyon High School in Spring Valley remain closed because of COVID-19 concerns, some parents and students say they’re getting tired of waiting because they want a return to the classroom and sports.“I want to play my sport again. I want to see my friends. I’m a freshman, I want to get that high school experience", says Mason Asvell a student at Steele Canyon High.He wants to play water polo again.Under the current state rules, youth sports can practice as long as they follow the COVID-19 guidelines.What they can’t do is play games, and that’s something Troy Mack doesn’t agree with, that’s why he organized this rally with others parents and students. Mack's daughter plays golf, and he believes the decision to allow games should be based on each individual sport.Mack adds, “I’m just stumped why we can’t make this golf work. There isn’t much of a distant sport than golf.”And this is where the CDC stands on this issue. On their website, it says the risk of a COVID-19 spread increases based on the number of people a participant interacts with, how close they physically are to others, and if they share equipment with multiple players.A spokesperson for the county has said they are looking to the state to provide guidance when it comes to reopening youth sports, which some students say is a waiting game they don’t want to play.Student Kailyn DeGuzman says, “Our mental health is being drained and will continue to be drained if we don’t go back to in person and in school.”And until something changes, the parents ABC 10News spoke with say they’ll continue to find ways to make their voices heard. 1675

Several industries have been disrupted since the coronavirus pandemic hit the U.S., including the food supply chain. From dumped milk to piles of uneaten onions and potatoes, this was just some of the food going to waste on farms across America due to COVID-19-related shutdowns.“Really its impact on the food supply chain started in March,” said Jack Buffington, a supply chain expert currently developing the supply chain program at the University of Denver. “Most of us who have been in the supply chain have never seen an event like this happen.” While farmers were dumping or burying products, food banks were missing out on some much-needed supplies, and dealing with growing demand. So were grocery stores as restaurants were closed and consumer buying habits changed.“More of the retail food market went down and more of the consumer home food market went up,” Buffington explained. “This caused a major shock in the supply chain where you had this situation where some foods were going to waste and some foods were in high demand.”First, the federal government stepped in to help. The USDA was given up to billion through the Coronavirus Assistance Program to buy fresh produce, dairy, and meat from farmers and then distribute that to those in need.And then there were nonprofit organizations like FarmLink.“We matched a farm in Idaho, an onion farm, to or local food bank in Los Angeles,” Max Goldman with FarmLink explained. “We delivered 50,000 pounds of onions to them.” He said that was their proof of concept.Goldman is a student at Brown University. Him and a group of students saw the disruption in the supply chain, and decided to do something about it.“A lot of what we do is finding food that would’ve been sent to the dump,” he said.So, FarmLink was born to help with food waste.“We’ve done two million pounds in seven days,” Goldman said. In just two months, they’ve reallocated four million pounds of food. They pay farmers their cost with donations and grants they receive, and help get the good to food banks. Goldman said the farmers are generally grateful“One of the first farmers we worked with, he said the day he has to dump his food is the worst day of his life. He works all year to basically produce this food and for him to have to a dig a hole in his backyard and just take a dump truck and put all his potatoes and onions or whatever it is, he said it makes him cry and it’s the worst day of his life,” Goldman said. “Even if he lost money on it, he was glad he could send this food to people in need during this time.”So far, they’ve delivered food to approximately 30 states.“This is not a new issue and its been accelerated and made more public due to coronavirus, but every year there’s over 60 billion pounds of food waste,” Goldman said.Buffington said the work of FarmLink and organizations doing similar work is just a drop in the bucket, but it’s promising.“Small in scale of the overall supply chain, but it’s huge in this opportunistic saving of food,” he explained. Buffington sees this type of work as a Band-Aid on the bigger issue, but it could open eyes to solutions down the road.“Supply chains work really well on stability,” Buffington said. “It’s tough to think about innovation which is disruption, when you're worried about a disruption to your current model.”“I think when we pull out of this you’re going to see remarkable opportunities for innovation,” he said.For now, FarmLink and other organizations are working to make sure food doesn’t go to waste. Goldman’s goal is to move over a million pounds of food a day. “We’ve had tens of thousands of people reaching out wanting to help, and that’s just so uplifting and really gives you hope,” Goldman said. 3729

  

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — They call it the Cosmic Crisp. It's not a video game, a superhero or the title of a Grateful Dead song.It's a new variety of apple, coming to a grocery store near you Dec. 1Cosmic Crisp is the first apple ever bred in Washington state, which grows the majority of the United States' apples. It's expected to be a game changer.Already, growers have planted 12 million Cosmic Crisp apple trees, a sign of confidence in the new variety. While only 450,000 40-pound (18-kilogram) boxes will be available for sale this year, that will jump to more than 2 million boxes in 2020 and more than 21 million by 2026.The apple variety was developed by Washington State University. Washington growers, who paid for the research, will have the exclusive right to sell it for the first 10 years.The apple is called Cosmic Crisp because of the bright yellowish dots on its skin, which look like distant stars."I've never seen an apple prettier in the orchard than these things are," said Aaron Clark of Yakima, whose family owns several orchards in central Washington and has planted 80 acres of Cosmic Crisps.The new variety keeps for a long time in storage and in the refrigerator, said Kate Evans, who runs the breeding program at Washington State University.And it's an exceptionally good "eating apple," she said. "It's ultra-crisp, very juicy and has a good balance of sweetness and tartness."Cosmic Crisps are a cross between the disease-resistant Enterprise and the popular, crunchy Honeycrisp varieties. The Honeycrisp, nicknamed "Moneycrisp" by some growers, was the latest apple to spark a big buzz in the United States when it was introduced a couple of decades ago. It was developed by the University of Minnesota."This apple (Cosmic Crisp) has a good opportunity to be a hit with a lot of people," said Clark, a vice president of Price Cold Storage, a company with orchards and fruit warehouses throughout central Washington. "It better be, because we are going to have a lot of them."Apples are a .5 billion a year business in Washington, which grows about 60% of the nation's supply, or nearly 140 million boxes. The top varieties are Gala (23, Red Delicious (20%) and Fuji (13%).Apples are grown in the arid valleys and brown hillsides of central Washington, a few hours east of Seattle, and watered by irrigation projects.The state has around 1,500 apple growers and 175,000 acres of orchards. About 50,000 people pick some 12 billion apples by hand each fall. The fruit is exported to 60 countries.With so much success, why was a new apple variety needed?"A new apple brings excitement," said Toni Lynn Adams, spokeswoman for the Washington Apple Commission, which markets apples internationally. "A new variety can reinvigorate a market and industry."Washington growers, who had watched the market share for sometimes mushy Red Delicious apples plummet over time, were looking to replicate the success of the Honeycrisp, Adams said."It's going to shake things up in a great way," Adams said. "We're expecting it to increase in volume rapidly."Adams could not speculate on how much Cosmic Crisp apples will cost per pound."Better quality makes for better returns," said Clark, the grower. "This is a for-profit deal, man. We're trying to make some money with it."Remarkably, this is the first apple variety developed in Washington state, which has been known for apples for more than a century.Scientists at WSU's Tree Fruit Research Center in Wenatchee spent 20 years breeding the desired apple tree seeds. In addition to helping pay for that research, apple growers need a license to buy the trees and pay a royalty on sales of the fruit.The trees take three years to produce a crop, said Kathryn Grandy, a member of the team marketing the apple."This will be the largest launch of a single variety ever, globally," she said, and it's backed by a .5 million marketing budget.Consumers will not have trouble finding the variety, said Grandy, who works for a company called Proprietary Variety Management and is based in the town of Chelan, in the heart of apple country.Work on developing the variety began in 1997, said Evans, of Washington State University. The process of cross-hybridization has been used to breed plants for hundreds of years, Evans said, and is quite different from the more controversial genetic modification methods."The goal, in my opinion, is to get more consumers eating apples," she said. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Monday that he supports President Donald Trump's decision to contest the results of the 2020 presidential election, despite there being little evidence of widespread voter fraud.In a speech on the Senate floor, McConnell said Trump should be given the right to exhaust his legal options to challenge election results before conceding to Biden."We have the system in place to consider concerns, and President Trump is 100% within his rights to look into allegations of irregularities and weigh his legal options," McConnell said.McConnell's statements Monday signal that top Republican leadership will back the Trump administration's decision to continue to challenge the 2020 electoral process, despite there being little evidence of widespread fraud.The Trump administration has filed lawsuits in states in which he's projected to lose or which are still too close to call, including Arizona, Michigan and Pennsylvania. While the Trump legal team has scored a few minor victories, they have so far not won a lawsuit that would alter the outcome of the race.So far, no one in top Republican party leadership has reached across the aisle to congratulate President-elect Joe Biden on projected victory. A handful of U.S. Senators and former President George W. Bush have congratulated Biden, but McConnell and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy have backed Trump's legal challenges.Last week, McConnell said he believed that there would be a peaceful transfer of power should Trump lose the presidency."Of course (we will have a peaceful transfer of power)," McConnell said on Friday.
