ATLANTA — Georgia’s top elections official on Friday certified election results showing Joe Biden won the presidential election after a hand tally stemming from a mandatory audit affirmed the Democrat’s lead over Republican President Donald Trump.Friday morning, Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger held a press conference to say his office would certify the results following the recount.“Working as an engineer throughout my life, I live by the motto that numbers don’t lie,” Raffensperger said at the state Capitol. “As secretary of state, I believe that the numbers that we have presented today are correct. The numbers reflect the verdict of the people, not a decision by the secretary of state’s office or of courts or of either campaign.”The Georgia hand recount results were 2,475,141 votes for president-elect Joe Biden and 2,462,857 votes for President Trump. Biden's lead is about .25 percent of the vote. Georgia's 16 electoral college votes will go to Biden, given him a projected 306 votes, well above the 270 needed to become president."In certifying the results, the Secretary of State affirmed that all 159 counties have provided to the state the total votes tabulated for each state and federal candidate. Further, the Secretary of State affirms that the statewide consolidated returns for state and federal offices are a true and correct tabulation of the certified returns by this office from each county," the statement from Raffensperger's office earlier in the day Friday reads.Now, Gov. Brian Kemp has until 5 p.m. Saturday to certify the state’s slate of presidential electors.The Trump campaign has until next Tuesday evening, November 24, to request another recount of the results, which would be a re-scan of the ballots that were hand-recounted.Raffensperger also said Friday morning he plans to propose election-law changes aimed at increasing trust in the results, by allowing state officials to intervene in counties that have systemic problems in administering elections, requiring photo ID for absentee voting and enabling more challenges to voters who might not live where they say.State lawmakers would have to make these changes in state law. 2189

ATLANTA, Ga. -- Even though Georgia didn't swing overwhelmingly blue, Democratic voters are hopeful the purple state is becoming more progressive.Pastor John Elmore's 10-year-old daughter isn’t old enough to vote, but this election has his fifth grader engaging in politics more than he ever expected.It's a trend he's noticed across his entire community. People are calling for unity and hope."That we as a people, no matter who's in office, will do our part to bring about a change," said Elmore, pastor of the 3D Church and a community activist.Change is something his family is witnessing firsthand. They’re in Georgia, one of the most contentious states of the 2020 election."I'm very proud to see Georgia purple," said Elmore.Elmore, his family and fellow voting activist Toccaro Combs held an Election Night watch party at their church. They were hoping to see Georgia swing blue by a landslide, but instead were left with sharply divided results for days."You could see it as division, but you can also see it as growth. I see an opportunity for a new nation, a new look, a new energy, the spirit behind the people of this nation, so I see it as opportunity," said Elmore.Elmore and Combs teamed up this year to build that opportunity for change."We have registered thousands, and hundreds of thousands, of new voters that have activated their voices, and to see Georgia be purple, I'm not surprised. I am just excited," said Combs.Tocarro said the excitement after this election is so different from four years ago. "The day after Election Day in 2016, I woke up and I was horrified. I didn't know, especially as a Black woman in this country, what it looked like for me under an administration that was opposite of my values, and I refused to wake up feeling that way this time around, no matter how the results came out," said Combs.This election saw record turnout for African American voters in Georgia, a success Elmore and Combs believe started from the ground up."We have good community leaders that are fighting hard daily, often to make sure that everyone has a fair opportunity. Yes, suppression is still real. It's still prevalent, it still exists, but I am proud to see that there's starting to be some balance, some awareness, being brought to it, and at this point, I could see the light at the end of the tunnel," said Elmore.The slow and steady fight to get people involved in elections exploded this year, a change Elmore is grateful to be part of."I've noticed people more in tune to politics, people that never cared before, so I think it's brought an awakening to the community."It’s these conversations, and the neighborhood movements, energizing communities of color to fight beyond party lines, beyond state lines, for a country where all voices are heard."It's my hope that change is now, and is happening, and is forever going to keep progressing," said Elmore."Together we are the United States of America, does not matter who you voted for. At least 92 people in 29 states have been infected with a strain of multidrug-resistant salmonella after coming into contact with a variety of raw chicken products, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday. Twenty-one of the sick patients have been hospitalized, though no deaths have been reported.The source of the raw chicken is unclear from lab tests, and no single common supplier has been identified. The strain has shown up in samples from a variety of raw chicken products including pet food, chicken pieces, ground pieces and whole chickens. The bacteria have also been found in live chickens. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service is monitoring the outbreak, and the CDC's investigation is ongoing.This particular salmonella strain is resistant to multiple antibiotics, the most common form of treatment.People sick with this strain have experienced stomach pain, cramps, diarrhea and fever 12 to 72 hours after exposure to the bacteria.Most people infected with salmonella, the most frequent cause of foodborne illness, get better in four to seven days without treatment. Symptoms can be worse for people with underlying medical conditions, children under 5 and people older than 65, as they typically have weaker immune systems.The CDC says the outbreak started in January, and more people have tested positive for this strain through September.The patients live in California, Washington, Texas, Nebraska, Missouri, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Hawaii, Massachusetts and Maine.Keep in mind that poultry can spread germs any time you handle it, the CDC notes, so always wash your hands when handling raw meat or poultry. Don't wash chicken before you cook it, as doing so can spread germs to other surfaces. Wipe down surfaces that have come into contact with raw meat, and use a separate cutting board. Cook chicken to a temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit to kill harmful bacteria.Some people may like to feed their cats and dogs raw chicken, but the CDC recommends against it. Germs in the food can make your pets sick, and you can get sick handling it.If you keep chickens as pets, getting too friendly with your fowl is also not recommended. Costumes may look cute on cats and dogs, but the CDC suggests that you avoid dressing your chickens up or cuddling with them to keep from being exposed to these bacteria. 2600

  

At least eight members of the same family were among the 26 people killed Sunday when a man armed with a rifle burst into the sanctuary of a church in Texas and started firing.The mass shooting left about 20 others wounded at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, about 30 miles east of San Antonio.The massacre killed about 4% of the small town's population. And no one at the church was left unscathed, Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt said."I think nearly everyone had some type of injury," the sheriff told reporters Monday.Texas Gov. Greg Abbott called the slaughter "the largest mass shooting" in the state's history. But it's still unclear what motivated the killer.Latest developments-- The killer had in-laws who attended the church, but they were not present at the time of the massacre, the sheriff said.-- The shooter was first shot by an armed resident who confronted the gunman outside the church. The suspect then turned the gun on himself, authorities said. He was dressed in all-black tactical gear, including a ballistic vest, and was later found dead in his vehicle.-- The victims ranged in age from 5 to 72 years old, said Freeman Martin, a regional director with the Texas Department of Public Safety. The visiting pastor was among those killed, Tackitt said.-- The 14-year-old daughter of the church's regular pastor was among those killed, said Sherri Pomeroy, the girl's mother. Her parents were traveling out of state when the shooting occurred.-- At least eight of the people killed were members of one family, according to a relative and a community leader. Those relatives span three generations and include a woman who was about five months pregnant and three of her children.-- A witness told CNN affiliate KSAT that he and the armed resident pursued the gunman in a car chase for about 11 miles.-- Speaking from Japan, President Donald Trump expressed condolences for the victims during a Monday news conference and said he believes the shooting was caused by a "mental health problem," not an issue with US gun laws.Who was the shooter?The gunman has been identified as 26-year-old Devin Patrick Kelley, according to two law enforcement sources who have been briefed on the investigation.But police have not officially named Kelley as the shooter. They described the gunman as a white man in his 20s. Authorities have not said what the motive was.Kelley was a member of the US Air Force and served at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico from 2010 until his discharge, according to Air Force spokeswoman Ann Stefanek.He was court-martialed in 2012 for assault on his spouse and assault on their child, according to Stefanek. He served a year in confinement, received a bad conduct discharge and had his rank reduced, she said.In April 2016, Kelley purchased the Ruger AR-556 rifle he allegedly used in the shooting from a store in San Antonio, Texas, a law enforcement official said. There was no disqualifying information in the background check conducted as required for the purchase, a law enforcement official told CNN.At one point, the shooter tried to get a license to carry a gun in Texas but was denied by the state, Abbott said, citing the director of Texas' Department of Public Safety."So how was it that he was able to get a gun? By all the facts that we seem to know, he was not supposed to have access to a gun," Abbott said. "So how did this happen?"How the attack unfoldedThe gunman was first spotted at a Valero gas station across the street from the church at about 11:20 a.m. (12:20 p.m. ET).He drove across the street, got out and began firing even before he entered the church, Martin said.David Flores told CNN that his father saw the shooter."My dad saw the gunman run into the church building and then he heard shots and saw people running," Flores told CNN. "People covered in blood and screaming. It was pandemonium everywhere."As the shooter left the church, a local resident used his own rifle to engage him, Martin said. The gunman dropped his weapon and fled.Johnnie Langendorff said he was driving to his girlfriend's house when he saw the shootout between the shooter and the armed resident.The gunman took off in a Ford Explorer, Langendorff told CNN affiliate KSAT.The resident "briefed me quickly on what had just happened and said we had to get him, and so that's what I did," Langendorff said.They gave chase in his truck and called police. As they sped after him, Langendorff said, the shooter "eventually lost control on his own and went off into the ditch" in neighboring Guadalupe County."The gentleman that was with me got out and rested his rifle on my hood and kept it aimed at him [shooter], telling him to get out. There was no movement, there was none of that. I just know his brake lights were going on and off, so he might've been unconscious from the crash or something like that. I'm not sure."Law enforcement later found the suspect dead of a gunshot wound inside his vehicle.A law enforcement official briefed on the investigation said multiple weapons were found in the shooter's car. The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are involved in the investigation.The victims and griefHours after the shooting, residents of Sutherland Springs hugged one another, held candles and sang hymns in a vigil Sunday night. Abbott attended the event, in which faith leaders offered words of solace and prayers.Sutherland Springs is the kind of place where "everybody knows everybody," said Gloria Rodriguez Ximenez, who attended the vigil."This is a small, Christian town, a very small community," she said. "Everybody's united. Everybody's so close to everybody."She knows the First Baptist Church's pastor and his family, including their daughter who died."I can feel the pain everybody's going through. There's so much hurt for a small town," Ximenez said.Others echoed the feeling of shock and heartache."My heart is broken," Wilson County Commissioner Albert Gamez Jr. told CNN. "We never think where it can happen, and it does happen. It doesn't matter where you're at. In a small community, real quiet and everything, and look at this."Twenty-three people died inside the church, which has a small sanctuary with wooden pews and red carpeting. As the number of COVID-19 cases rapidly increases, you might feel more apprehensive about eating out now.So WFTS took your questions straight to a former health inspector, who believes certain food safety protocols should be followed when you're dining out."I think everyone should be wearing a mask if they're in public," said Danielle Egger, who started her own restaurant consultation company called Florida Food Safety Systems, after being a health inspector for many years.She says since restaurant inspections are public, you should look up past inspections here to see how the restaurant performed before the pandemic hit."If the restaurant has had concerns about sanitation in the past before COVID started, it might be a good idea to consider going elsewhere. And if sanitation issues, handwashing, and cleanliness were an issue before this ever started, chances are they're struggling to get up to compliance now," she explained.When you walk into a restaurant, Egger says employees should be constantly cleaning, especially highly-touched areas."I have been advising them to set timers so that every 30 minutes, they're wiping down high touched areas. That's going to be any of the door handles, any of the points of sale systems that they're using to complete transactions," she said.And that includes stylists, pens, and even credit card machines because the virus can live on surfaces."There are some studies that say that COVID-19 is possibly able to survive on a surface like plastic for about three days so it's definitely possible," Egger said.But can the virus live on food?"It appears as though coronavirus and COVID is actually heat sensitive, which means that most of the time, those temperatures we're cooking those food items too is able to cook off any kind of the virus," she explained.And you may have heard that eating outside is safer than inside. So why is that?"I believe there were three reported cases of people consuming food in restaurants in an enclosed area and they actually did find the virus in the air conditioning system," she said.And masks are a must right now."Anybody that's facing our customers should be wearing masks, that includes general managers. That includes anybody who's out on the floor, interacting with customers or employees," she said.And the biggest mistake people make when wearing a mask? They don't cover their nose."You're still running the risk of inhaling that potentially contaminated air. So we have to keep everything covered," she explained.Egger also recommends restaurants display on their door what they're doing to keep you safe and what they expect of their customers.That may include things like 'masks required', 'please social distance' or 'think about take-out if you're not feeling well.'''Egger says disposable menus are the safest but if a restaurant hands you a reusable menu, they should be sanitizing that menu between each customer.WFTS' Wendy Ryan first reported this story. 2971
