SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Unified School District officials joined local House members Thursday to urge the Senate to pass a bill to secure funding they say is necessary to reopen schools safely amid the COVID-19 pandemic.The school district and local elected officials said the HEROES Act's passage would bolster efforts to obtain what they said are much-needed protective measures in order to begin in-person learning.Though San Diego County schools were given the green light to reopen this week, its largest school district started the new school year online due to safety concerns regarding the virus.SDUSD Superintendent Cindy Marten said the district has made efforts to ensure student access to remote learning capabilities and school meals, but its ultimate goal is to reopen all campuses for in-person learning.However, she said more funding is needed in order to do so safely.Marten said the district will need to purchase more personal protective equipment, increase cleaning and daily health checks, and make safety modifications to numerous school buildings in order to address safety obstacles presented by the pandemic.Kisha Borden, president of the San Diego Education Association, the union representing the district's teachers, said many of the resources needed for in-person learning "require additional funding that our schools simply do not have and did not budget for."The House of Representatives passed the HEROES Act in May, but it still requires Senate approval. The proposal allocates billion for kindergarten through 12th grade education. The counter-proposal HEALS Act would earmark billion for schools, though critics say much of the funding will go to schools that commit to physically reopening.Reps. Susan Davis, Scott Peters and Juan Vargas were among those calling for the bill's passage with district officials on Thursday."We have the best students. We have the best teachers here in California. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Some people making emergency calls to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department on Verizon phones experienced problems connecting with dispatchers for part of the day Tuesday.It was not immediately clear what was preventing 911 operators from hearing certain -- but not all -- calls made on the Verizon network, sheriff's public-affairs Lt. Karen Stubkjaer said.The regional law enforcement agency worked with the telecommunications company to determine the source of the problem, Stubkjaer said.Officials advised anyone having trouble being heard by a sheriff's dispatcher to hang up, after which the emergency operator will immediately call back.The connection problems were tending to go away on the return calls, Stubkjaer said.By mid-afternoon, the New York-based wireless carrier had identified and resolved the problem, according to Stubkjaer.A Verizon spokesperson did not immediately return a call seeking comment on the issue. 962

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police searched Thursday for a hit-and-run driver who ran a red light at a Mission Valley intersection and slammed into another car, seriously injuring it's 60-year-old driver.The crash was reported shortly before 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Friars and Frazee roads, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said.A 60-year-old woman was driving a 2007 Lexus sedan southbound on Frazee Road when a man driving a blue Ford pickup truck westbound on Friars Road ran a red light at Frazee and crashed into the driver's side of the Lexus, Heims said.The pickup driver kept driving, then pulled over a short distance away before he got out and ran away, the officer said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County's unadjusted unemployment rate dipped to 3.5 percent in February, with both farm and nonfarm employment showing gains, the California Employment Development Department announced Friday.The county's adjusted unemployment rate sat at 3.8 percent in January, its highest point since the third quarter of 2017. February's unadjusted rate is the same as its revised 2018 unemployment rate, according to the EDD.Nonfarm industries added 9,700 jobs between January and February, with total nonfarm employment increasing from 1,480,100 to 1,489,800. Total farm jobs increased by 400 from 8,100 in January to 8,500 last month.Multiple nonfarm industries showed job gains in the thousands. The professional and business services industry increased by 4,100 jobs, the most of any industry in the county. The trade, transportation and utilities industry decreased the most of any in the county, falling by 2,600 jobs.Year-over-year nonfarm employment increased by 19,900 jobs, from 1,469,900 in February 2018 to 1,489,800 last month. The educational and health services industry showed the largest year-over-year employment gains at 6,900, pacing multiple industries that showed yearly job gains of more than 3,000.Like the county's month-over-month job market, the trade, transportation and utilities industry had the largest year-over-year decrease in job numbers, falling by the same number of jobs from 223,600 in February 2018 to 221,000 last month. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Thanks to tips from the public, physicians Thursday were able to identify a Scripps Mercy Hospital patient who was unable to tell them his name.The retirement-age man was brought to the Hillcrest medical center Sept. 20 from the North Park area, according to San Diego police.On Wednesday evening, authorities circulated a photo of the patient in hopes that someone would recognize him.Police did not release the man's name. 450
