BALTIMORE — Social media ads are designed to sell consumers on products they're already interested in, but be careful about ordering from unfamiliar websites.Queen Shaydonna Haynesworth was served up an ad for a rainbow Christmas tree on Instagram, and she jumped at it. A few weeks later, her package arrived.In a video she recorded while opening the package, Haynesworth was baffled when she realized the tree she got in the mail looked nothing like the ad she was served."Like seriously? Who is responsible for this?" she said.Haynesworth ordered the tree from a website called Iridescent To You, but the payment was processed by Yokawa Network Limited."So I love rainbow everything, and so I'm like okay, a rainbow Christmas tree, why not? This should be fun," Haynesworth said.That is, until a feather duster lookalike arrived in the mail."Yo! It's missing a leg!" Haynesworth said in her unboxing video. "The worst thing I've ever seen in my whole life."She didn't try contacting the company or returning the item — she figured it was a lesson learned.Angie Barnett, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau in greater Maryland, said that's what creators of fake websites hope will happen."The scammer or the schemer clearly made a profit. Most of these items are made overseas, so to return the item you'd actually have to ship to China or ship to an outside country and the cost is going to be phenomenal," Barnett said.Before ordering anything from social media ads or unfamiliar sites, look at the contact page. If there is no business address listed, that's a red flag. If there is an address, Google the address to see if it exists. Call the phone number to see if it works. Send an email and wait for a response. And use a credit card when shopping online.While it's nothing close to what she ordered, Haynesworth said she's keeping the tree."I'm determined now," she said. "Like, it's mine. I might as well. I'm going to get the ornaments I was going to put on it. Now, I'm defiant. BENTONVILLE, Ark. – This holiday shopping season is expected to be like no other, because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, so retailers will need to adjust accordingly.Wednesday, Walmart announced its plans for how it intends to meet the changing needs of customers in the coming months.Specifically, the retail giant plans to address these areas: earlier holiday shopping deals, increased online shopping, evolving wish lists, and the need for safe shopping experiences.Expanded Black Friday dealsWalmart is promising an “all-new Black Friday experience,” with deals being offered earlier. The retailer says it will spread the traditional Black Friday savings throughout the season and will have more deals available online.“We’ve heard from our customers that many plan on starting their holiday shopping well before Black Friday and that they’re looking for gifts that fit their current lifestyle,” said Scott McCall, executive vice president and chief merchandising officer for Walmart U.S. “So, we’ve adjusted our strategy to adapt to these new shopping preferences – we’re offering more of what they want now, earlier than ever, and all at the best prices.”No additional details were provided about the Black Friday expansion, but the store said it will share more soon.Seasonal hiring to meet online demandWith many Americans expected to do much of their shopping online this year, Walmart says it will hire more than 20,000 seasonal associates in its eCommerce fulfillment centers across the country. Bruises, loss of vision or the loss of an eye – injuries during protests have drawn more attention to what police call "non-lethal" tools.An expert tells us there are certain categories: Chemical weapons like tear gas, electric devices like Tasers, impact weapons like batons, and kinetic impact munitions, meaning any fire projectiles, including bean bag rounds.“You tend to see grenade launchers being used in crowd control, more than anything else,” said Charlie Mesloh, a professor of criminal justice at Northern Michigan University. “Also, you're going to see shotguns only because they're plentiful and they're, you know, they're accurate.”Mesloh is also a former officer who has conducted research on these weapons. He says what many people have started calling “rubber bullets” are actually skip-fired munitions. Those are the most concerning to him because they're less predictable.Skip-fired munitions are typically shot out of a grenade launcher with a few rounds inside. They're meant to be bounced off the ground to cut down on some of the sting.Mesloh says that after looking at pictures of injuries, he thinks some are being fired directly at people.“There are some problems and with how these are being used, some of them might be training,” said Mesloh. “Some of them also could be more environmental. Nichols Fountain and in Mill Creek Park, which is located just east of the Country Club Plaza, should be changed.Nor is there a timeline for considering any possible changes.Parks Board Commissioner Chris Goode proposed renaming the J.C. Parkway, which runs between the Plaza and the park north from West 47th Street to West 43rd Street, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at a June 9 commission meeting.He also proposed renaming the fountain to Dream Fountain, a nod to King’s famed “I Have A Dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.Several major Kansas City-area civic groups issued a statement in support of Goode’s proposed changes, but the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Greater Kansas City said it doesn’t believe the parkway is an appropriate place to honor King.The KC Parks and Rec Board of Commissioners do not plan to introduce a formal resolution regarding a possible name change at its next meeting, which is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30.Currently, there is no timeline for when, or if, the board will address the possibility of renaming the fountain and parkway.The effort to rename the fountain is not new. (AP) — A California man who said he wanted to fly to the edge of outer space to see if the world is flat or round has died after his home-built rocket blasted off into the desert sky and plunged back to earth. “Mad" Mike Hughes was killed on Saturday after his rocket crashed near Barstow, California. Waldo Stakes, a colleague who was at the rocket launch, said Hughes, who was 64, was killed.
