WATCH LIVE:LAKE HUGHES (CNS) - A fast-moving brush fire quickly scorched about 10,000 acres in the Lake Hughes area Wednesday, burning what appeared to be homes and prompting a multi-agency effort and mandatory evacuations for at least 100 homes.The Lake Fire was reported at about 3:30 p.m. near North Lake Hughes Road and Pine Canyon Road in the Angeles National Forest, according to Marvin Lim of the Los Angeles County Fire Department, which was battling the blaze with Angeles National Forest crews, as well as assistance from the Los Angeles, Culver City, Beverly Hills and Santa Monica fire departments.The fire west of Palmdale had a "rapid rate of spread," amid temperatures in the mid-90s, low humidity and gusty winds, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The forest service and county fire departments quickly called in second-alarm responses.By 4:30 p.m., the flames had burned 400 acres, and officials said the fire had the potential to burn 1,000 acres, according the Los Angeles County Fire Department. That quickly changed two hours later, when the flames exploded across an estimated 10,000 acres, with no containment.The fire was entirely on federal land as of 6:30 p.m., according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.The sheriff's department issued mandatory evacuation orders affecting at least 100 homes, and an evacuation center was set up for displaced residents at Highland High School in Palmdale.By 7:15 p.m., the flames had jumped Pine Canyon Road, two miles west of Lake Hughes Road, and shortly after, flames were seen on aerial footage burning what appeared to be homes in the area.ABC7 reported at 7:20 p.m. that homes had started to burn in the fire. 1698

WASHINGTON, D.C. – As restrictions are eased around the country, several states are seeing higher rates of coronavirus infections.Data tracked by The Washington Post shows that since the beginning of June, 14 states and Puerto Rico have recorded their highest seven-day average of new COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began.Those states include Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Kentucky, New Mexico, North Carolina, Mississippi, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Utah, according to The Post.CNN reports that the number of states seeing upward trends in coronavirus cases is even higher, at 22.With many of these states, like Florida and Mississippi, now under only minor-to-moderate restrictions, health experts worry the spread of the virus could snowball in these areas and possibly overwhelm hospitals.The first wave of the pandemic moved through major metropolitan areas, like New York City and Los Angeles, but those cities are now moving towards reopening. Now, The Post reports that the highest percentages of new cases are coming from places with much smaller populations.As of Tuesday, more than 111,000 people have died from COVID-19 in the U.S. and over 1.96 million cases have been confirmed in the country, according to a running tally by Johns Hopkins University.There is some good news though. Researchers at Berkley University found that travel restrictions, business and school closures, shelter-in-place orders and other non-pharmaceutical interventions averted roughly 530 million COVID-19 infections across the six countries in the study period ending April 6.Of those infections, 62 million would likely have been “confirmed cases,” given limited testing in each country, researchers said. 1745

I’m not used to seeing on a night that should be, whatever your political persuasion is, a night that should be about us celebrating our democracy. That we’re in this place where we are having to board up buildings and things, like that’s sad.”Meanwhile, other protesters are in support of the fencing and added security, but they wish it wasn’t necessary.“It’s actually very sad and also very sad that when there’s a Republican running for office, the other side makes threats and says it will burn it down, well the Trump supporters in the streets will make them know they’re not welcome,” said James Sullivan, a Trump supporter. “I think it’s a logical response to threats and the president and the Trump administration, the police of D.C., they have to treat every threats seriously.”Law enforcement is also camped out around Washington, just in case any of the protests regarding the election turn violent or need broken up.Regardless of the electoral results, protests are expected to continue for days to come.So far, they’ve been peaceful, and it seems a majority of people out on the streets want to keep it that way.“All I want is a peaceful transition,” said one protester. “I mean it’s been done this way since we’ve had a president. It’s always been peaceful and that’s really all we want.”That protester thinks it’s important to set an example for the world.“We are Americans. The world watches us. We set the example. One woman, Cheryl Fleming, is personally taking voters to the polls, calling it her civic duty.Despite the wet weather in Virginia today, Fleming is behind the wheel, volunteering her time to voters."Pickin’ up folks and taking them to the polls, insuring that they have no excuse," says Fleming.There’s a reason why Fleming is doing this. Over two decades ago, she had a felony conviction on her record and was stripped of her right to vote.But in 2016, that right was restored. She was 54 years old when she cast her first ballot. Now, she's making it her mission to get people to the polls.One of Fleming’s passengers on Election Day was 70-year-old Marine veteran Joseph Crouch, who has a similar story to Fleming’s.“When you're an ex-felon, you feel isolated and locked out,” says Crouch.Crouch’s voting rights were restored four years ago, but this is his very first election. He says he has Fleming to thank for getting him to the polls.“She’s a fantastic person, Crouch said.“For her to step up like she’s doing, that’s fantastic.” 1323
