SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A "Day of Service" around Mission Bay will honor Maruta Gardner, the woman killed by a drunken driver while she was painting over graffiti in Mission Beach and Pacific Beach.Half a dozen service projects will take place around the bay all day Friday, Nov. 3."She was just a firecracker," said Dawn Reilly, one of the organizers with Beautiful MB. "She would liven everybody up and boost your morale and make you feel like you could accomplish anything if you just got together and did it."RELATED: Mission Bay activist killed in road rage crashFrom 10 a.m. until 12 p.m., volunteers will clean up the bike path from Rose Creek to Crown Point.The PB Street Guardians will help people do clean up and graffiti patrol around the Pacific Beach Business District from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. and from 4 p.m.- 6 p.m.From 2 p.m.-4 p.m., the Mission Beach Town Council will lead volunteers on a clean up and graffiti patrol around MB.Volunteers can also spend time at a senior center near the bay all day if they want a non-physical option.Volunteers can also help paint utility boxes along Mission Boulevard.Full details on the activities, as well as links to register, can be found here.Organizers will also unveil a large mural on a wall at Mission Bay High School to memorialize Gardner. Having the mural there not only memorializes her, but it can also help teach the next generation about what Gardner did and how to make a difference where you live."That's just as important what we're teaching every single day," said MBHS Principal Ernest Remillard.Several student groups will take part in the volunteer activities as well.Organizers chose November 3rd because that's the day the City Council declared as "Maruta Gardner Day" in 2015.Gardner was killed in February of 2016 by a drunk driver. She was removing graffiti at the South end of Mission Boulevard at North Jetty Road when she was hit.Jonathan Garcia pleaded guilty to a charge of gross vehicular manslaughter and was sentenced to 11 years in prison.Rather than focus on the crime, volunteers hope this day of service helps people remember how inspiring Gardner was to everyone who met her."She was amazing," said Remillard. "She was so proud and honored of her time here at Mission Bay.""I'm wowed by how many people were inspired by her," Reilly added. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Violent crime dropped in San Diego County in the first half of the year for the first time in six years, even though the region saw a spike in the number of homicides, according to a report released Tuesday by the San Diego Association of Governments.The report by SANDAG's Criminal Justice Research Division found that the mid-year number of violent crimes in the county was 5,356 in 2020, down from 5,545 last year.Mid-year violent crime totals from recent years were 5,510 in 2018; 5,421 in 2017; 5,361 in 2016; and 5,330 in 2015. The five-year increase amounted to a 4% bump in violent crime.The report found there were 52 homicides in the first half of 2020, a dramatic increase from 38 homicides measured at the halfway point last year.A month-by-month breakdown of the homicides this year showed that seven were recorded in January, three in February, 11 each in March and April, and 10 each in May and June. In 2019, January had five homicides, February had six, March and April each had six homicides, May had eight and June had seven.Among homicides in which motive could be determined, 22% were attributed to robbery -- compared to 4% last year -- and 3% were attributed to gangs -- down from 19% last year, according to the report. No homicides were attributed to domestic violence this year, while 19% of last year's homicide were considered domestic violence-related.The report also found that overall domestic violence cases reported to law enforcement in 2020 increased each month from January through March, then decreased slightly in April and May before rising 3% in June, compared to the same time in 2019."The zig-zag percentages of reports in domestic violence regionwide could be attributed to the pandemic," SANDAG director of research and program management Cynthia Burkem said. "When you factor in social distancing, including families isolating together during stressful times and with less contact with mandated reporters, it could affect an individual's willingness to report a crime to police."Reports of rape fell to 432 after reaching 539 at the midway point of 2019. Further analysis showed the biggest month-to-month changes from this year compared to last year were seen in April and May.The number of reported robberies dropped 10% -- from 1,410 in 2019 to 1,268 this year -- while the number of aggravated assaults increased 1% -- from 3,572 in 2019 to 3,604 this year.Reports of property crime totaled 24,512 in the first half of this year, down from 27,239 during the same period in 2019.In 2020, 3,624 burglaries were reported throughout the county, a 3% drop from the first half of 2019. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Carlsbad company is contributing to Australia's relief efforts for some of the country's most vulnerable victims.North San Diego County's Oska Wellness sent several devices to an animal hospital in New Wales. Its goal is to help offer pain relief for severely burned koalas. The device, the Oska Pulse, uses electromagnetic pulses to help damaged cells heals. The goal is to speed up the recovery process to allow the animals begin rehabilitation sooner. 487

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A boy who went missing on his way home from school Tuesday afternoon has been found safe, police say. The boy’s parent’s called police to report him missing around 2:15 p.m. Tuesday. Police could be seen in San Diego's Skyline neighborhood searching for the boy. Police say the boy usually walks home from school. According to police, the 9-year-old was found at a McDonald's. 405

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 36-year-old Filipino man was arrested soon after police say he shot a woman twice in the back as she sat in her car outside a Bay Terraces apartment complex.San Diego Police say Emmanuel Ocular walked up to the 20-year-old woman as she was in her car in the 6800 block of Doriana St. at about 9:30 p.m. Thursday. Without warning, Ocular shot the woman twice in the back and fled the scene, police say.The woman was taken to a nearby hospital with non life-threatening injuries.Soon after, police located Ocular in the 4800 block of Eastgate Mall and arrested him.Police did not immediately have a motive for the shooting. SDPD Gang Detectives are investigating the incident. 703
