DEL MAR, San Diego (KGTV)— Dozens of people gathered in front of the Del Mar Fairgrounds Saturday to protest a popular gun show.The weekend after yet another mass school shooting in Santa Fe Texas, the Del Mar Fairgrounds is hosting the Crossroads of the West Gun show. The show has been in Del Mar for many years.While show-goers drove into the parking lot, protestors yelled into the megaphone, “Stop the bloodshed. Close the Gunshow!”Del Mar Mayor, Dwight Worden joined protestors. “Why are we doing this when the community doesn’t want it?“ he asked. Worden has been credited for updating local zoning ordinances, which now ban gun shops, gun shows, or firing weapons in the city of Del Mar.But despite the name, the Del Mar Fairgrounds is owned by the state, so city zoning rules do not apply.It is governed by a Fair Board, which chooses what events they host a year in advance.“Were doing is this kind of demonstration of community concern and we’re working with the Fair Board and state legislature to see if we can change the rules and if not eliminate the gunshots, at least cut back the number,” Mayor Worden said. 10News was filming the protest, when an unrelated cyclist found an in-tact bullet being run over by cars on Via De La Valle.“It’s not a war zone. You don’t need to have ammunition out here on the street,” the cyclist said. Protestors said this is exactly why guns do not need to be in their neighborhood.Across the street, we met gun rights advocates advertising for the show.“It’s like a hobby shop for gun owners,” Nicholas Mielke said. He is an Armorer at Firearms Unknown. “We do enjoy it. It’s a passion of ours.” Mielke said he does not agree with his passion being taken away from him.“People who do serious crimes with other object, I don’t see us banning them either,” Mielke said. “I am a proponent of our constitutional rights. The first amendment is something that I totally respect them for that. At the same time, I don’t have to agree with them either.”The city does get sales tax from items sold at the gun show. But the mayor said he is willing to give that up, if it means having fewer guns on the street.The gun show is on the agenda for the September Fair Board meeting, at which they could take action to discontinue them, after the contracts expire.  2341

DENVER -- Starting with the next academic year, students in a Colorado school districtwill attend classes for four days each week instead of five.For the past few months, the 27J school district — which covers portions of the Denver suburbs, including Brighton, Commerce City, Henderson and Thornton in addition to unincorporated areas of Adams, Broomfield and Weld counties — has been exploring and discussing the idea of a shorter week and on Monday, the district made it official.Students will attend classes Tuesday through Friday. Rather than extending the school year to meet state requirements for instruction time, students will be in class longer each day.For elementary schools and full-day kindergarten, school will begin at 7:50 a.m. and end at 3:30 p.m. Middle and high schools will start at 8:30 a.m. and end at 4:32 p.m.To address concerns from parents about child care on Mondays, the district will offer child care from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. for a fee of per child per day.District officials said the change is due in part to the district's difficulty competing with other districts in terms of recruiting and retaining teachers, who often leave for other districts that pay better. Officials hope a shorter work week will encourage more teachers to stay put."I realize this will be a significant change for our students, their families, and the communities we are so fortunate to serve, but our district can no longer be expected to do more with less financial resources," said 27J Superintendent Dr. Chris Fiedler. "We are 100% committed to providing our students with the necessary skills and competencies that will enable a future far beyond graduation. But this year, the command is making sure the coronavirus won’t sideline the fabled Santa Claus from delivering gifts around the world. This is the 65th year for the U.S.-Canadian operation that has tracked the jolly old man since a child mistakenly called the base asking to speak to Santa. Air Force Gen. Glen D. VanHerck says he's confident that Santa Claus knows how to stay safe. He says even a pandemic won't disrupt Santa’s schedule. DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) — Del Mar's 2020 racing season kicked off Friday in a way never seen before - without fans. The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club is hosting the season without people in the stands to help stop the spread of the coronavirus. The decision's impact will go beyond the Thoroughbred Club, which stands to lose million this year in ticket sales and concessions. "It's more than just a money making venture for us, because probably this year, we won't make any money," club CEO Joe Harper said. The club reports that it makes a 0 million economic impact to the region in a typical year. That includes 5,150 jobs and a boost to the area hotel occupancy rate from 70 percent to 87 percent. Additionally, area business, including restaurants in Del Mar and neighboring Solana Beach, are losing out on fans pre and post race. Last year, the track averaged 11,264 fans per day. "You kind of don't have a choice, you kind of just got to be proactive and be creative and make it work," said Charles Koll, owner of Viewpoint Brewing Company, across from the fairgrounds. Koll said he would rely on community support, and reach out to jockeys at the fairgrounds, to increase his customer base during this time. (KGTV) - The Flower Hill Promenade in Del Mar is helping restaurants in its parking spaces by creating extra outdoor dining space.Milton's, a restaurant and deli in the shopping center, opened up a new outdoor area by covering up parking spaces with turf and tents and setting tables and chairs. That area opened up this week after new health orders forced restaurants to close their indoor dining areas due to rising coronavirus case numbers.Owner Barry Robbins says that they are also working on building a lounge area with a big-screen TV. With fans not allowed at the Del Mar horse track this season due to the pandemic, Robbins is hopeful their proximity to the race track will attract horse racing fans."We want to create a lounge, and put up a tv, and show the races there," he said. "Then you'll have more a night time venue with music, which we've never done before."Rose Javin, the General Manager at Flower Hill Shopping Center, says the outdoor dining spaces are an investment in their clients. Another restaurant in the Flower Hill Promenade, Cucina Enoteca, also recently rolled out turf and put up tents to create a comfortable outdoor setting for their customers. They are currently working with a third client to see if they can help them."The shopping center has put up the money to do all this and create this area for the tenant," Javin said. "We're a family here, and we want our tenants to thrive and survive."Robbins says they were hard-hit by the pandemic. When restaurants were allowed to reopen, Robbins says they invested thousands of dollars in putting up glass dividers inside the restaurant. Still, they were only open for two weeks before they had to shut their indoor area again.Robbins says having the outdoor space is a relief."It means sleeping at night. I was so scared," he said.
