PARIS, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- French Prime Minister Francois Fillon Tuesday met with visiting Chinese State Councillor Dai Bingguo on bilateral ties at the Matignon Palace in Paris.     French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao had reached consensus on the development of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations during their meeting in New York last month, which charted the orientation for further development of their bilateral ties, Fillon said.     France would make joint efforts with China to implement the consensus reached by the two leaders, deepen the strategic cooperation and boost cooperation in fields of nuclear power, aviation, environmental protection, new energy and small and medium-sized enterprises, Fillon said.     For his part, Dai said China-France relations had developed smoothly on the whole since the two nations forged diplomatic ties45 years ago.     China has treasured its ties with France and is ready to work with France to ensure that bilateral ties will further develop on the right direction, he said.     He urged the two countries to handle their bilateral ties from a strategic and long-term perspective, work hard to create and maintain a favorable atmosphere and environment for the development of China-France relations, and ensure the steady and sound development of their bilateral ties on the right track, he said.     Dai left Beijing last Friday to visit Britain and France at the invitation of the two governments. He arrived in France on Tuesday.

BEIJING, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Six Chinese nurses were awarded the Florence Nightingale medal on Tuesday for their prominent contributions to health care.     Chinese President Hu Jintao, who is also the honorary president of the Red Cross Society of China, conferred the medals on the nurses at the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing.     Premier Wen Jiabao and senior leaders including Li Changchun, Xi Jinping and Li Keqiang also attended the awarding ceremony.     Chinese nurses have made great contribution to the country's humanitarian cause, said Vice Premier Hui Liangyu at the awarding ceremony.     A total of 28 nurses from 15 countries worldwide won the award this year.     The Florence Nightingale medal, which is the highest international honor for nurses, is being given for the 42nd time since its introduction in 1912.     "It honors exceptional courage and devotion to caring for the victims of armed conflict or other disasters, or exemplary service and a creative and pioneering spirit in the areas of public health or nursing education," according to the Web site of the International Committee of the Red Cross.     The award is named after Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), an English nurse known for her pioneering work to improve the care of sick and wounded soldiers during the Crimean War (1853-1856).     A total of 54 Chinese nurses have won the award since the country began to recommend candidates for the award in 1983.

SHANGHAI, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Visiting U.S. President Barack Obama said here Monday the United States does not seek to contain China's rise and he welcomes China to be a "strong and prosperous and successful member of the community of nations."     Obama made the remarks during a dialogue with Chinese youths in China's economic hub Shanghai.     He said the world is fundamentally interconnected and power in the 21st century is no long a zero-sum game.     "The jobs we do, the prosperity we build, the environment we protect and the security we seek are all shared, " he said. "One country's success does not come at the expense of another."     He arrived in Shanghai late on Sunday and met city officials Monday morning before his meeting with young Chinese.     He will head to Beijing Monday afternoon.

SINGAPORE, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and other leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) member economies met Saturday to explore ways of countering the international financial crisis and reviving the world economy.     During the two-day meeting, the APEC leaders were to focus on the financial crisis, climate change, protectionism, supporting a multilateral trading platform, and advancing regional economic integration. APEC leaders exchanged views on "connecting the region" during the opening session. BEIJING, Dec. 26 -- The weight of private enterprises in the overall economy is on the rise and that of State-owned enterprises (SOEs) on the decline, Ma Jiantang, minister of the National Bureau of Statistics, said on Friday.     The number of private firms rose by 81.4 percent from 2004 to 2008 to reach 3.6 million and SOEs dropped by 20 percent to 143,000, Ma said at a press conference where China's second economic census results were released.     China has made great efforts over the past 30 years to restructure its economy. It has gradually raised the proportion of private enterprises after the market-oriented reform began in the early 1980s. As a result, the private sector has contributed an ever-growing value to the country's GDP and provided most of the jobs.     But in recent years, some major acquisitions have seen SOEs buying into private companies, sparking concern that the State may be strengthening its control over the private sector.     Ma said the census figures do not suggest SOEs are buying into private enterprises.     In terms of asset value, SOEs saw their proportion in the nation's total drop by 8.1 percentage points from 2004 to 2008 to 23 percent. In contrast, private enterprises' assets rose by 3.3 percentage points to 12.3 percent.
