SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It looks like a mini farmer's market: fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, even flowers. All of it coming from home gardens like Rosemary McElroy's. She and her fiancé Kevin Rookey love having fresh produce in their own backyard but, "we realized everyone has way more produce when you grow it than you can actually consume."The couple posted on the Nextdoor App, thinking maybe other neighbors wanted to trade.RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Reverse meal planning saves woman hundreds on grocery billThe response was so overwhelming, McElroy decided to organize a meet-up."This is around Lake Murray, let's host it at Lake Murray, we'll call it Lake Murray Produce just to give it a name," said McElroy. So far they've done three swaps, once a month for about an hour. Each time more and more people show up, able to walk away with organic produce for free and make sure nothing goes to waste.RELATED: Ocean Beach duo cook up 'foodie' meals on a day budget"When you have 500 oranges on a tree and you're not eating THem you feel guilt, right? So I think it’s about relieving guilt, too," said McElroy. If you'd like to know more or participate, click here. 1181

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Life in San Diego is expensive. Most people would like to have more money, but they don’t always like talking about it. 10News is exploring solutions in our coverage of Making It in San Diego. The fear can grow when retirement comes closer. “You wake up and it’s already gone, and I’m in my early 60s and all of a sudden you have to plan for these things,” says Bob Bishop, who is close to retirement age. RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Not all 401Ks are equalThe SDFLC is a nonprofit group offering help to people at every stage of life, free of charge. “Planning, figuring out what it is you want to accomplish is the most important thing you can do,” says Chase Peckham, Director of Community Outreach at the SDFLC.Through programs like “Smart with your Money” and “Boost for our Heroes”, the center tailors its financial advice to the customer’s needs. RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Woman climbs out of 3,000 debt holeThe hardest part of the planning is asking for help. “We’ll hire somebody to come help us in our yard, we'll hire somebody to come fix our plumbing, so why not get help from financial experts and they see it every single day.” Experts offer one key tip to get started: pay yourself. “That way you know every single month what's leftover. You don't have to put away because you've already put away the amount you want to put away.” 1387

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Members of Congress are responding to a Team 10 investigation that uncovered allegations the government is not providing adequate medical care to some U.S. citizens in its custody. Two recently filed lawsuits allege that dozens of individuals’ medical needs were deliberately ignored by Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agents, and Americans were forced to undergo life-threatening and torturous detox in temporary holding cells at the border. In a statement to 10News U.S. Congressman Bennie Thompson, Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security wrote, “The allegations made in these lawsuits are extremely troubling. Anyone in CBP custody who is in medical distress should receive urgent medical care if they require it. Across the board, it’s clear that CBP has work to do to ensure safe and humane conditions for all detainees.”San Diego area Congressman Scott Peters also responded saying, “Everyone in federal custody deserves access to basic care. Ignoring a detainee’s pleas for help runs counter to CBP’s own national policies, which say detainees are entitled to medical care if they report an illness or appear to need help. Officers at the border may be overwhelmed, but if CBP is going to detain people, they have a duty to provide proper medical care to the people in their custody.”10News also heard from ACLU of San Diego & Imperial Counties. A spokesperson wrote, "Unfortunately, horrible detention conditions at U.S. Customs and Border Protection facilities, including inadequate medical care, is nothing new – though they are violations of the agency’s own internal standards for treatment of people in its custody. As a result of recent federal policy decisions, far more people are being unnecessarily held in CBP custody, for longer, under these deplorable conditions. These decisions are greatly exacerbating CBP’s longstanding failure to meet the basic humanitarian needs of the people it insists on detaining.”When asked for a comment on the allegation in the lawsuits a spokesperson for Customs and Border Protection said the agency cannot comment on matters that are currently under litigation. 2159

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It’s no mistake, the Marriott Marquis in Downtown San Diego is playing host to bees on the roof, and it’s all for the benefit of local business. The hive highlights a growing trend called urban beekeeping and the popularity of the practice is creating a lot of buzz. In 2012, the City of San Diego amended its municipal code to allow some residents, along with community gardens and retail farms to keep two beehives. The practice has several benefits, according to the city, including access to fresh, natural honey. The city says urban beekeeping also reduces the number of aggressive Africanized bees in the vicinity of the docile honeybee hive. Beekeeping is also known to reduce carbon footprint due to local production, however, there are some things to be aware of. The primary risk of beekeeping is getting stung. The city says if you plan to keep bees, you can count on bee stings every now and then. Before deciding to keep bees, the City of San Diego urges dialogue with neighbors. Click here for more on beekeeping in San Diego. Tomorrow morning on 10News at 6, Jared Aarons looks into what benefits the bees have downtown as well as some unique concoctions local restaurants are whipping up with the fresh honey. 1254
