SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Normal Street in Hillcrest Friday, things were anything but normal.   Tim Henderson and his colleagues were checking email in the street."Just a minute ago, we had a meeting out here," he says while pointing to an assortment of chairs.    He and his co-workers at KTUA, a landscape architecture and planning firm, set up a little home office in a spot usually occupied by 3 to 4 parked cars.   The space was decorated with plants and patio furniture.Welcome to “Park(ing) Day 2017,” billed as a worldwide event where artists and designers transform metered parking spots into temporary public parks.    The event ran Friday from 9AM – 3PM, with several downtown businesses also taking park."We're in a ‘car-centric’ world, we always have to supply places for cars,” Tim explained.  “We're making a statement: during some part of the year, you can come out into a space not  being used for cars -- and have a park!"Henderson and his work buddies barbecued in the parking spots and even roasted s’mores.Parking is at a premium in Hillcrest, but Henderson said nobody seemed to mind them taking up the spots.    In fact, he said drivers had been slowing down to catch a glimpse at the “front yard” they created on the street.“They love it,” he said. 1351

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Officials on Sunday released the names of the service members involved with a deadly amphibious assault vehicle training accident off the Southern California coast last week.A total of 16 service members were involved in the AAV accident on July 30, after the vehicle started taking on water while conducting shore-to-ship waterborne operations near San Clemente Island. Five service members were rescued and have since returned to their assigned ships.15th Marine Expeditionary Unit officials said eight missing service members are presumed dead after the accident:Pfc. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Neighbors in Hillcrest say an abandoned church has become a campground for the homeless. The church sold the land to developer LMC North Park Holdings in 2018. They were still leasing it out until about a month ago. That's when residents say the homeless started moving in. "It's more or less the drug crowd, sex trafficking, stuff like that that winds up utilizing these areas," he said. The spot on Park Boulevard and Meade Avenue is boarded up, covered in graffiti, and littered with needles. On Tuesday, firefighters say transients smoking drugs started a fire at another vacant building a few blocks down. Passante says it's just a matter of time before that happens at the church. "It's the same people you see over and over and over again and most of them have some kind of mental illness," said Passante. "The quicker places like this can be demolished the less we'll have that problem.LMC North Park Holdings says they are aware of the problem and have hired 24/7 security. Our crews didn't see any security guards while out there for several hours gathering the story. They say they've been waiting on permits and have plans to start demolition by the end of the year. 1206

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One man is dead and another person was injured after two separate shootings just miles apart early Saturday.The first shooting occurred in the Lincoln Park area before 3:30 a.m. near Euclid and Imperial avenues. A suspect wearing dark clothing reportedly shot at a group of transients, according to San Diego Police.One person was hit by debris from the gunshot and taken to the hospital as a precaution.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodA second shooting occurred about two miles away, an officer patrolling Mountain View heard gunshots around the same time. He arrived to find a man lying on the ground on South 45th Street, near Willy Henderson Sports Complex.The Hispanic man in his 20s to 30s was shot multiple times and died at the scene, police said. His identity has not been released.Police are searching for a white Volkswagon seen in the area by witnesses following the shooting. Police said there is no indication the shooting is gang-related.Police received calls about both shootings around the same time but said there is nothing to suggest the two are connected. 1153
