Lawmakers around the country are considering passing legislation that would allow teachers to carry guns in the classroom.Those for and against have voiced their opinions. But now, three teachers in Michigan are putting the concept to the test.Three teachers — one who’s never shot a gun before and two concealed pistol license (CPL) holders — agreed to be put through an active shooter drill.“I’m a little nervous,” said Bob Fite. “I usually shoot at paper plates and at the gun range.”Fite has been a high school social studies teacher for 35 years. He is also a CPL holder.This active shooter training drill is what police use. Think of it as a big screen video game, except this scenario is all too real.Fite had his finger on the trigger the whole time, which is dangerous. But he still hesitated to shoot and when he did, he missed the mark.“There are lockers in the background. If that’s kids in the background, we got a problem,” he said.“It’s a very touchy subject, and I don’t know where I stand. I really don’t,” said Chad Keisel is a high school biology teacher of 24 years.He’s never shot a gun before. In the first training scenario, Chad was shot without even hitting the gunman.“I thought it was only one guy, how easy is that? But if there’s kids running around in the background, I would not shoot,” he said.Katherine Montie has only been a high school math teacher for a few months. She’s a CPL holder and during the practice round, it was clear she was a great shot.In the first scenario, she kept calm and killed the suspect.But in the second scenario, she didn’t realize there was more than one suspect that shot back at her. She was “killed” before she could hit one of the shooter.“If I knew those students, that would have been a completely different situation, for sure,” she said.Allen Park Police Sgt. Wayne Albright facilitated thie drill. He teaches students and school staff on the ALICE method, which doesn’t involve guns.ALICE stands for alert, lockdown, inform, counter and evacuate. Students and staff are trained to use a lockdown method while hiding under desks or furniture during a shooting or being proactive and doing whatever it takes to keep the shooter out of the room, or if unable to do so, using counter measure and evacuating.For more information on Alice, click hereSgt. Albright says teachers may not be able to handle emotional stress that comes with this type of training.“You learn to distance yourself and separate your feelings from the actual scene. I don’t think teachers have been trained to do that,” he explained. “They don’t have to. They have a connection with those kids because that’s what they’re supposed to do.”After the drill, the teachers expressed concern.“I was shaking. I can feel it in my knees. I can feel it in my elbows,” Keisel explained. “It kind of froze me for a second and that was somebody I didn’t even know. And it wasn’t even real.”If armed, the teachers say they’re not comfortable leaving their students in a classroom, while risking their own lives to hunt down a shooter.“I would like to say I would be the hero, but I don’t know if I would be,” Keisel added.“I would be locked down in my room making sure that nobody came through that door,” Fite said.Being smaller in stature, Montie says if she were armed in the classroom, her mind would constantly be on her gun.“What if one of my students tries to take that gun from me? Then you aren’t even thinking about an active shooter, you’re just thinking about every other day of the year,” she said.One thing all three teachers agree, the training has to be extensive. ut they question where the funding would come from.“I think it’s not as easy as hand teachers a gun, they are already there anyway they can just neutralize any threats because they all have guns and training,” Keisel said. “Come and try this and then answer the question, if it’s a wise thing?" Fite said.A bill has been introduced into the Michigan state House that would allow teachers to carry a gun at school. The teachers we spoke with say even if the bill passes, they hope lawmakers will focus on additional security measures, not just arming teachers. 4269

LAS VEGAS — A Las Vegas woman and her mom say a man in a parking lot starting insulting them because they were speaking Spanish.It happened in the parking lot of the Smith's grocery store in Southern Highlands. The mother and daughter say they were walking through the lot when a man overheard them speaking Spanish.That's when the daughter decided to get out her phone and start recording the encounter. At one point the woman calls him a racist and the man replies, "Yes, I am. Very much so." Then, after she talks to her mom again in Spanish, the man mimics the woman before saying "Maybe I should go back to where I came from, Ohio, because they don't let you people there."The woman behind the camera shared her video on Facebook. She didn't want to go on camera because she was still shaken up, but wanted to share her video to show what happened to her wasn't acceptable.While the encounter was alarming, it's certainly not isolated. Jose Macias with Make the Road Nevada says many Hispanic-Americans and Spanish speakers, as well as other minority groups, have repeatedly faced similar situations."This has definitely been rising since Trump became president," Macias says. "Hate towards immigrants, to people that speak Spanish has been rising up."As for the woman behind the cameras, shoppers KTNV spoke with in the same parking lot hope she'll remember some different messages instead when she comes back to shop."We have enough hatred. (CNS) - The La Mesa Police Department will resume parking regulation enforcement citywide starting the second week of November.La Mesa suspended the issuing of parking tickets on March 17 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.Starting Monday, Nov. 9, La Mesa police will issue written citations for vehicles parked in violation of posted street sweeping routes, metered parking restrictions, curb time limits, commercial zones and 72-hour parking limits.The city of San Diego temporarily suspended parking enforcement on March 16, limiting enforcement to holiday or Sunday regulations only. (KGTV) -- La Mesa officials Tuesday released documentation which details the May 30-31 protests that evolved into riots, looting, and property destruction in the city.City officials said they released their timeline as part of a “commitment to transparency.” According to officials, the timeline of events is “primarily based on law enforcement incident logs throughout the day.”In the document, officials noted the La Mesa Police Department and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office were aware of rallies scheduled around the county for May 30 and began their preparations for potential protests on May 28.A peaceful rally with about 200 protesters took place May 29 outside of La Mesa police headquarters, with a larger event planned for the following day.Police worked with sheriff’s officials and the California Highway Patrol to oversee the May 30 protest.READ: La Mesa protest turns violent with fires, lootingAccording to the timeline of events, a peaceful protest began in the city just after 2 p.m. About 90 minutes later, the city informed residents via a Nixle message and tweet of the protest’s impact near University Avenue and Baltimore Drive. Residents were urged to avoid the area.By 3:30 p.m., protesters made their way onto Interstate 8, forcing the closure of eastbound traffic.According to the city’s timeline, at around 4 p.m. “a group of protesters on the freeway began getting more aggressive. Some protesters began throwing bottles at officers stationed on the westbound side of the freeway. Officers watching a protester’s Instagram Live video heard her announce that they were going to raid Walmart at the Grossmont Center mall; a group jumped over the wall into the center near the Game Stop.”Meanwhile, 1,000 people marched on Murray Drive and about 200 protesters gathered outside a LMPD station at the Civic Center.Authorities began receiving numerous calls of protests “morphing into violence and destruction,” including a 911 caller who reported she “was struck in the face by a protester in a restaurant parking lot.”City officials said an order to disperse was given to those gathering at the La Mesa police station just after 4:45 p.m. However, the city’s timeline noted, “In the next several minutes, a riot begins to take shape, with the U.S. flag in front of the police station set on fire, people throwing rocks at the building and at officers, and vandalism of the station. Responding sheriff’s deputies “are greeted with rocks and water bottles being thrown by rioters. With rocks going into the broken Bearcat windows, officers are forced to deploy a pepperball to free the vehicle and officers.”About 30 minutes later, tear gas is deployed and pepperballs are used “as rock-throwing and destruction continues unabated.”As efforts to disperse the crowd continue, a fire station is attacked.According to the city, dispersal orders were given at all protest locations around the city at around 6:40 p.m., with San Diego police’s ABLE helicopter helping to deliver the orders.“With rioters not heeding the dispersal orders, officers continue to deploy gas and pepperballs in an attempt to disperse crowds. Individuals break into City Hall. There is an apparent arson attempt at the American Legion (VFW) hall and the U.S. flag in front is set on fire. Two squads are deployed from Command Post 2 to form arrest teams. When they arrive, their cars are attacked,” the city’s timeline said.At around 7:35 p.m., ABLE reported that “City Hall appears to be on fire,” and officers were sent to the building to disperse crowds and secure the facility.City officials said it was around 8:16 p.m. when “a beanbag round is fired from approximately 40 yards away toward a woman (later identified as Leslie Furcron) who was observed throwing an object an object at SDSO deputies. An officer reports that a female is down; within 30 seconds of the report, Ms. Furcron is carried away by members of the crowd, loaded into a vehicle and driven away. (KGTV) - A La Mesa dessert shop is beating the odds, flourishing through the pandemic.Toran Grays opened Extraordinary Banana Pudding March 14th, the day after the President declared a national emergency due to the coronavirus.Grays was set up for success from the get go, with prepackaged desserts available for take out, and partnering with Door Dash so he could be COVID compliant."I didn’t know COVID was going to hit so fast, but I did have belief in my product, so I said you know what I’m going to give it a try, you gotta try something at some point in your life if you want to do something great," Grays said.He tried starting up at least two other businesses before Extraordinary Banana Pudding,"I started a clothing company, an online shipping company, none of it worked before."Grays was determined. He grew up in Webster and Imperial Beach, and as a kid his grandmother came to visit, "my grandmother came down here from Mississippi, she made [banana pudding] for a bunch of our family members and I fell in love with it instantly!"Grays said it was his great-grandmother's recipe that's been handed down generations. After his grandmother passed away he realized he could keep their legacy alive.He struggled at first getting the permits for the business, but once the doors opened and customers tasted his creations, they were sold.He expanded from the traditional banana pudding flavor to everything from cheesecake to pistachio.Thursday a couple drove all the way down from Oceanside for the pudding that's catching fire on social media.Grays said a family came all the way from Texas and vowed to come back every summer until he could open up a location closer to home.Grays' business has been so successful, he's opening another shop in Las Vegas in August, headed by his brother. I guess you could say the proof was in the pudding."It’s been a blessing the community has been really really supportive and I couldn’t imagine this, I really couldn’t," he said getting emotional.Success holds a deep meaning for him and his family and he wants to encourage others to chase their dreams, "you gotta go out and get what you want, you gotta try out here because look, I did it in the middle of COVID so can you."A feat even more impressive after looking at the statistics.
