CANBERRA, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Prisoners and health experts on Saturday told national broadcasting network ABC News that they are concerned of a looming HIV epidemic in Australia's prisons. The warning came following a test report undertaken in August showed that 40 percent of inmates at a correctional center in Canberra of Australia tested positive to Hepatitis C.According to the head of the Alcohol and Drug Service based at St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney, Alex Wodak, roughly 25 percent of Australia's prison population are injecting drugs, and he is concerned about the risk of an HIV explosion in Australia originating in prisons."Were Australia to have an epidemic of HIV beginning among people who inject drugs, it is almost certain that it would begin in one of our prisons. So we are very exposed to this risk," he told ABC News on Saturday. The Australia Capital Territory state government has proposed a trial prison needle exchange program in Canberra's correctional center, and Paul Cubitt, who currently works at the Alexander Maconochie Center in Canberra, said he has never seen so many syringes in a jail."Under a controlled regime it will actually take those needles that currently exist within a correctional center out of the environment, and prisoners will be more willing to use a clean item under a level of anonymity which then protects them and protects staff," he said.Meanwhile, The Community and Public Sector Union 's national secretary, Nadine Flood, agrees action must be taken to curb prisoner drug use.Dr Wodak noted that prison needle exchange programs have been operating overseas for over a decade with ten countries provide inmates with clean needles, and said it is shameful Australian prisons are lagging behind.

BEIJING, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- China's Supreme People's Court vowed to harshly crack down on bribery, abuse of power and malpractice in food safety cases as such illegalities have become top concerns for Chinese people.Chinese courts at all levels had heard 173 cases and sentenced 255 people in relation to the production and sale of unsafe food in the first ten months of this year, Sun Jungong, spokesman of the Supreme People's Court (SPC), said Thursday."China has seen a growing number of food safety cases in recent years with increasing difficulties for investigation," Sun said.According to the SPC, Chinese courts handled 84 food safety cases in 2008, and 148 and 119 cases in 2009 and 2010, respectively. The number of food safety violators sentenced in the past three years totaled 101, 208 and 162, respectively. The SPC also promulgated four typical food safety illegalities exposed in recent years. In the latest food safety scandal, four people in central China's Henan province were prosecuted for the crime of "endangering public security by using dangerous means" in July after they were found to have produced and sold clenbuterol, a poisonous feed additive that pig farms use to boost the output of lean meat. The spokesman said the SPC will strengthen cooperation with police and procuratorial organs to improve the efficiency of dealing with, and preventing food safety crimes.

BEIJING, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's major textile companies are expected to witness an annual increase of 8 percent in their value-added output over the next four years, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said Thursday. The ministry published a plan regarding supporting the development of the textile industry during the country's 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015), according to which the sector's exports will reach 300 billion U.S. dollars by 2015 with an annual growth of 7.5 percent. The industry is also expected to employ 20 million people by 2015 and its energy consumption per unit of value-added output will drop by 20 percent from 2010, the guideline said. The country will encourage the textile industry to enhance brand-building and aims to build 5-10 textile companies of global influence and 50 companies with an annual revenue of more than 10 billion yuan by 2015.The guideline warned of potential risks for the sector, including volatile changes in raw material prices, rising production costs and a complicated international trade environment. The guideline said the industry should develop new products and explore new markets to ensure a healthy development during the coming period.

BEIJING, Oct. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- Taking aspirin everyday may lower the risk of developing colon cancer for people with the cancer-causing genes, researchers found. The finding was published on Friday in the British medical journal "Lancet".The researchers followed 508 patients with Lynch syndrome, an inherited disorder which increases the risk of developing colon and other cancers. These patients were divided into two groups: members in one group took 600 mg aspirins everyday; another group took only the dummy pills. After 4 years, 10 colon cancer cases were reported among 258 patients who took daily aspirins for at least two years, comparing with 23 cases among 250 patients on dummy pills."This is good news for a very specific population," said Asad Umar, a cancer prevention expert at the U.S. National Cancer Institute. However, the finding doesn't apply to the general public, suggested the lead author of the study John Burn, a geneticist at Newcastle University in England.Only those who are at risk of such diseases should consider taking aspirin regularly, such as people having a family history of colon cancer, he added.

BEIJING, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese authorities broke up more than 1,800 dens that made or sold counterfeit drugs in cases that involved 3.35 billion yuan (530 million U.S. dollars) in a two-year crackdown, according to the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA).During the campaign, 13 government departments mobilized more than one million law enforcement workers to combat the sale of fake drugs via online advertising or consignment, seizing more than 5,000 kinds of illegal products, said SFDA deputy head Bian Zhenjia Thursday at a meeting.According to Bian, the action also targeted malpractice during the manufacturing process as well as selling non-pharmaceutical products as drugs. In the operation, authorities conducted more than 28,000 on-site inspections in medicine production factories and halted the production of 98 varieties of drugs, Bian said. However, Bian noted that problems still exist, including rampant illegal drug advertising and online sales of fake drugs, improper manufacturing practices and outdated laws and regulations concerning drug safety.Bian said the SFDA will continue to cooperate with other government departments and step up supervision and crackdowns on the online sale of fake drugs.
