BEIJING, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping Tuesday urged Communist Party members and government officials to exert more efforts to learn and implement the Scientific Outlook on Development. Xi, also member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, made the remarks during a meeting on better implementation of the theory. He said after the first and second round of the theory implementation work, progress has been made in solving problems, institutional innovation and Party's working style building. He urged Party members and government officials to better deal with social contradiction and disputes and further strengthen the social security work. Xi also pointed out the third-round learning would mainly be held at towns, villages, communities, hospitals, and primary and secondary schools. About 1.22 million grass-roots Party organizations with nearly 40 million members will join the third round learning work.

BEIJING, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Several hundred former generals, famous military artists, and soldiers gathered at the foot of the Great Wall Saturday to celebrate the 82nd anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), which falls on August 1. At the ceremony organized by the China Great Wall Society (CGWS), veterans recited a poem telling their love and wishes for the country and the people. Lieutenant General Shao Huaze, vice chairman of the CGWS, said the peom was written based on the wishes collected from the veterans. The CGWS also held an exhibition of more than 500 calligraphy and painting works by former generals.
BEIJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- China's top economic planner, the National Development and Reform Commission, said Saturday it is drafting a development plan for the emerging industry of energy conservation and environmental protection. The commission said in a statement posted on its Web site that the move is aimed to counter the impact of the global financial crisis by "accelerating the cultivation of emerging industries and aiming at a commanding height in future economic competition." The development plan on the sector covers energy conservation, sustainable use of resources and environmental protection, according to the statement. Technologies, equipment, products and services concerning energy conservation and environmental protection would be involved in the plan, it said. The commission revealed no further details on the plan.
