The importance of darkness is not something many think about, but it's becoming abundantly clear just how much our bodies need it. Dr. Courtney Hunt with Desert Jewel Wellness in Scottsdale says when looking at a blue light after dark, it turns off the body's ability to make melatonin, which is the hormone responsible for deep sleep.Blue light can come from a variety of sources like phones, tablets, computers, televisions or household LED lights. Medical studies have shown that blue light disrupts the circadian rhythm (the body's internal clock) and that could lead to health issues. A report published in 2016 by the American Medical Association showed, "a long-term increase in the risk for cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity from chronic sleep disruption or shiftwork and associated with exposure to brighter light sources in the evening or night."So what can we do to protect ourselves?Dr. Hunt recommends getting blue-blocking glasses and wearing them in front of a screen, especially when working on a computer or tablet at night. Smartphone users can also downlaod apps like f.lux on your devices that change the color temperature of the screen. 1219

The NFL will consult an advisory committee made up of former coaches, general managers, and players on such issues as postponing, moving, or even canceling games this season due to the coronavirus pandemic. Troy Vincent, the league's football operations chief, said that the advisers, who will report to Commissioner Roger Goodell, will help avoid any "inequities" in those decisions. Vincent did not identify any members of the panel, saying he was awaiting their approval to do so. Vincent also said the league will consider playoff games in a bubble environment, noting that "all options are on the table."Game-day and travel protocols were sent to all 32 teams this week, which included "extensive in-stadium specifics include rules for the field, sidelines, locker rooms, tunnels, entrances, and training rooms," the Associated Press reported. The league said that when traveling, masks must be worn at all times, everyone must stay in separate hotel rooms, buses limited to no more than 50% capacity, and when on an airplane, a seat must be left open between passengers."I am very proud of the innovation and attention to detail that our club medical staffs have shown as they have created these plans, which were reviewed and approved by the league, the NFLPA, and our infectious disease experts,” said NFL Chief Medical Officer Dr. Allen Sills.Teams will not be allowed to leave their hotel to eat or use restaurants that are open to the public, the league said.Cheerleaders and mascots cannot be on the field this upcoming season, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported. 1584

The name change for Boy Scouts of America is creating a buzz online as people react the organization's recent move to become more inclusive. They will begin calling the program for ages 11 to 17 "Scouts BSA."It was a historic decision for Boy Scouts of America as they take the next step towards allowing females into all their programs with their focus on bringing families together in one spot. It's all a part of the new "Scout Me In"?recruitment campaign, uniting girls and boys of the same family with one organization."Having Johnny in Scouts and Sally in soccer or some other activities — if they can go and do things together as a family unit, that's what families are looking for from the research we have," says Chris Mehaffey, scout executive and CEO of the Mid-America Council. And so the move was made today, switching the Boy Scouts program to Scouts BSA with the hopes that the new name will make girls feel comfortable joining the program geared towards 11-18 year olds.Still Mehaffey believes the name switch won't make a huge difference in girls joining the scouts. "I think those that are interested in our program will come anyway, this just shows that we are being more inclusive to what demographics we'll be serving."As for the Girl Scouts, they're remaining focused on creating programs for girls, and only girls. "So it's not changing the way we deliver our mission and programs. We're going to continue to do what girls asked us to do and provide for their changing needs," says Melissa Breazile, marketing director of Girl Scouts of Nebraska. And if girls desire, Mehaffey says girls can choose to join both organizations. "You don't have to choose. Girl Scouts meet on different nights, Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA meet on different nights, if you're interested in both if parents will allow, do both."Now this switch only affects the Boy Scout program. Ranks like Cub Scouts and Eagle Scouts, will keep their names. While the Cub Scouts have already began to bring in girls, the organization plans to fully bring them in by February of 2019. 2115

The Lockport City School District thinks it could soon be a national model for school security. Superintendent Michelle Bradley said the district is installing 300 new security cameras loaded with a new high tech software. The software recognizes people who pose a threat, like terminated employees, sex offenders, suspended students, or someone carrying a gun. Then, it alerts police or school leaders. “It will add another layer of security to what we already have,” Bradley said. It will be the first security system of its kind in any public school in the United States. It will be installed in all 10 buildings owned by Lockport School District. Tony Olivo with Corporate Screening & Investigative Group, LLC is working with Canadian owned SN Technologies to get th\e high-tech system into more buildings in western New York.“We’ve actually been looking to deplore this type of technology in hospitals, health care organizations, as well as places like malls,” Olivo said. The new system is just part of the changes Lockport Public Schools have made to security recently. The school also just installed new doors and a sign-in system, which cost close to million dollars. The projects are being funded by the Smart School Bond Act of 2014 — a referendum allowing the state to give schools money for safety following the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012. More than 200 school across New York are on the waiting list for approval for funds from the act. The recognition system will be installed in Lockport schools over the summer. Leaders say this is just another layer of proactive security to protect their most precious values.  1709
