SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diegans have been itching to visit several local theme parks and attractions since they were closed in March due to COVID-19.Now that California has approved zoos and outdoor museums to reopen under safety guidance, several local spots have announced reopening dates in time for summer. It also has a staggering number of veterans who don’t have a place to liveAnd, even more alarming is the number every year who take their own lives.As ABC 10News Anchor, Kimberly Hunt explains…a non-profit in San Diego lead by, and staffed by, veterans is looking to change that.There are an estimated 1,100 homeless vets on the streets of San Diego. Statistically they commit suicide at a rate of 1.5 times higher than the general population.Kyle Drake is president of Cammies and Canines Sanctuary… a veteran owned, faith bases non-profit helping veterans by providing, among other things transitional housing, structure, and therapy.On this sprawling ranch in Dulzura, they’re given an opportunity.But Cammies and Canines Sanctuary under the importance of companionship. It pairs each veteran with a rescue dog which has been schooled by their master trainers as a service animal.Kyle’s construction company builds tiny homes on the property for each vet to have a sense of place. Tony’s pest control company, Mosquito Joes trains interested veterans to work in the pest control industry, and everyone is given a sense of responsibility and respect. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Residents in Carmel Mountain Ranch plan to continue their fight against a proposed apartment building, even though the City Planning Commission has recommended approval of the project by the City Council."Alante" is a 50-unit apartment building under development by New Pointe Communities. It will be built on top of an existing MTS parking garage that is no longer in use. It will be located at 10211 Rancho Carmel Drive, just east of the 15 near the Ted Williams Freeway."We do believe that the Alante community is a great addition to Carmel Mountain Ranch as it brings 50 apartment units of workforce housing that is much needed in the northern part of the City," New Pointe President Scott Sandstrom told ABC 10News in a statement.Sandstrom also pointed out that 15 of the units will be designated as affordable housing. Sandstrom says they'll be the first affordable units in Carmel Mountain Ranch.But the local community has come out against the project over the last few years. In 2019, a petition gathered 912 signatures to stop the development. And in June, the Carmel Mountain Ranch/Sabre Springs Community Council voted unanimously against it.Despite the opposition, the San Diego Planning Commission voted to recommend approval of Alante to the City Council."Frankly we weren't surprised because the Planning Commission has been ruling against community planning groups very frequently for a long time," says CRMSSCC Chairman Eric Edelman.RELATED: Neighbors push back against construction of apartment complex"Our objection is the bulk and scale of the project," Edelman says. "We would rather see a smaller building with more affordable units."Plans filed with the city say the building will be 6 stories tall and more than 70,000 square feet. 26 of the units will be one-bedroom apartments. The other 24 will be two-bedrooms.It will also have 58 parking spaces, 5 motorcycle spaces and 22 bicycle spaces."We understand that we're probably not going to stop this project altogether but we would like to alter the bulk and scale of it," says Edelman.The decision by the Planning Commission cannot be appealed, since it is a non-binding recommendation. But Edelman says his group will now work on a strategy to convince the City Council to deny it."We'll refine our case based on what we learned from the Planning Commission," says Edelman. "It's really important that the Carmel Mountain Ranch Community Planning Group does its best to advance the feelings of the community as a whole."The community says they have concerns over the building's impact on traffic and wildfire safety. They also worry it will be the tip of the iceberg to allowing more large-scale development in the neighborhood.Right now, a separate developer has plans for a 1,200 unit apartment complex on an abandoned golf course just north of the Alante lot."The main concern there is just that these two things aren't being done in a thoughtful manner, in tandem," says Edelman. "It should be done in a sensible manner. A blanket solution that works in another part of San Diego may not work here in Carmel Mountain Ranch."Sandstrom says Alante gives the city a chance to turn an eyesore into an asset."We hope to turn this home for cars into homes for people," he told the Planning Commission at their meeting on July 23.City Councilman Mark Kersey, who represents the area, told ABC 10News he was not able to comment on the project, since it hasn't formally been presented to the Council. A workplace needed to have a 3.5 out of 5 overall rating, and workplace factor ratings in career opportunities, compensation and benefits, culture and values, senior management, and work-life balance of at least 2.5.For the eleventh year in a row, Boston-based consulting firm Bain & Company took the top spot. Bain operates 57 offices in 36 countries, Glassdoor reports. Other top U.S. employers included Zoom Video Communications, Procore Technologies, and Boston Consulting Group.Top small and medium companies included Heap, Horizon Innovations, Silverline, Marketing 360, and Digital Prospectors.In-N-Out Burger, ranked third among large employers, was the highest-rated company with San Diego opportunities. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Restaurants up and down 5th Avenue in the Gaslamp District are gearing up for yet another three days of crowded on-street dining.This upcoming weekend will see 24 eateries offering service on the asphalt, up from the original eight that participating during the launch on June 18. But as they bask in the opportunity, restaurants on surrounding streets are asking - what about them?"It's a ghost town, especially at night," said Patrizia Bronchi, who owns Operacaffe on Fourth Avenue. "I'm really scared to have to close the restaurant because it's not possible to go on like this."Bronchi says revenue at Operacaffe is down more than 70 percent. She depends on crowds from the Balboa Theater across the street and visitors to hotels and conventions. All of that is nonexistent amid the Coronavirus outbreak.Bronchi says she is happy that 5th Avenue restaurants are seeing the increased business, but that the crowds are not spilling over onto 4th Avenue. Michael Trimble, who heads the Gaslamp Quarter Association, says the group cannot also close 4th and 6th Avenues due to traffic concerns.However, he said the association wants to help with new marketing, decorative lighting and parklets - such as replacing some parking spaces with permanent outdoor dining areas. "We really are trying to do what we can to support all of the merchants in the Gaslamp Quarter," he said. On Thursday to Saturday, 5th Avenue will be closed from L to F streets to allow on-street dining. During the second weekend of July, the number of participating restaurants will expand to 27. 1595
