Researchers from Florida Atlantic University released a video on Tuesday that shows how droplets disperse into the air from a person’s mouth. The researchers used different kinds of masks to analyze the disbursement of the droplets. The researchers also showed that without a mask, six feet of distance might not be enough to avoid infection. The FAU team tested a single-layer bandana-style covering, a homemade mask that was stitched using two-layers of cotton quilting fabric consisting of 70 threads per inch, and a non-sterile cone-style mask that is available in most pharmacies. The team used a mannequin, Laser lights and synthetic fog to help visualize the spread of the droplet from a cough..The researchers said that stitched quilted cotton masks worked the best in the simulation, with droplets from emulated coughs traveling just 2.5 inches from the mask. By comparison, without a mask, the droplets moved more than 8 feet, with some droplets traveling up to 12 feet during a heavy cough. The researchers also noted that the droplets remained suspended in midair for up to three minutes in the simulated environment.“We found that although the unobstructed turbulent jets were observed to travel up to 12 feet, a large majority of the ejected droplets fell to the ground by this point,” said Dhanak. “Importantly, both the number and concentration of the droplets will decrease with increasing distance, which is the fundamental rationale behind social-distancing.”FAU said that droplets from a cough traveled 3 feet, 7 inches from a bandana; 1 foot, 3 inches from a folded handkerchief; and 8 inches from a cone-style mask.“Preliminary results from our experiment reveal that significant concentrations of small particles from a turbulent jet such as from a heavy cough/sneeze can linger in still air for more than one minute. It only took the particles a couple of seconds to travel 3 feet; in about 12 seconds it reached 6 feet and in about 41 seconds it reached around 9 feet,” said Siddhartha Verma, an assistant professor in FAU’s Department of Ocean and Mechanical Engineering.Last week, the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation projected that 33,000 American lives would be saved between now and October 1 by near universal wearing of masks.Last month, a study in the Lancet found that the use of masks and respirators by those infected with the virus reduced the risk of spreading the infection by 85%. The authors analyzed data that showed that N95 respirators in healthcare settings were up to 96% effective. Other masks were found to be 77% effective. The CDC issued guidance in April to recommend mask wearing while in public, which has become a requirement to enter retail establishments in more than a dozen states. The CDC's guidance stressed several points: That wearing a face covering is not a substitute for social distancing, and that the public should not use medical or surgical masks. The recommendations suggest the public should use fabric or cloth that covers the mouth and nose.To view FAU's video, click here. Justin Boggs is a writer for the E.W. Scripps National Desk. REDONDO BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Defense contractor Northrop Grumman will be moving secret cargo through a Southern California marina this weekend. The Daily Breeze reports part of King Harbor Marina in Redondo Beach will be shut down from 5 p.m. Friday to 5 p.m. Sunday for the move of what is described as a U.S. Navy demonstration project. The large object will be taken from a Northrop Grumman facility in Redondo Beach to a barge for shipment to San Diego. The newspaper says that during a Redondo Beach City Council meeting this week, Northrop Grumman officials cited national security concerns in declining to provide information about the object. The company agreed on Oct. 15 to pay the city ,000 for a licensing agreement to use the marina and for any costs the city incurs. 787

Prince Andrew's legal team has told CNN that they will not comment on the arrest of Ghislaine Maxwell, a day after an acting U.S. Attorney urged him to come forward with information about the case.On Thursday, Maxwell was charged with four counts relating to her alleged involvement in recruiting and trafficking underage girls for Epstein and two counts of perjury. Epstein himself was arrested and charged with trafficking in 2019, but weeks later was found dead in his jail cell.In announcing the charges against Maxwell on Thursday, Audrey Strauss — the acting U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York — urged anyone with information about the case to come forward, particularly Prince Andrew."We would welcome Prince Andrew coming in to talk with us. We would like to have the benefit of his statement," Strauss said in response to a question about Prince Andrew's involvement in the case.Prince Andrew was a known associate of Epstein and even stayed at his New York apartment in 2010 — two years after Epstein pleaded guilty to sex crimes. Prince Andrew also appears in a photograph with Maxwell and a girl who has since claimed Prince Andrew and Epstein abused her.The Duke of York has strongly denied any wrongdoing in his connection to the case.Sources also told CNN that Prince Andrew's legal team says it's "bewildered" and claimed the team has communicated with the Justice Department twice in the last month. Prince Andrew's representatives claim they never received a response from the Justice Department.British Prime Minister Boris Johnson also refused to comment on the matter Friday, saying he cannot be expected to comment on matters relating to the Royal Family."It's just not the tradition; it's not what we do," Johnson said. 1767

President Donald Trump used the United Nations as a foil on the campaign trail in 2016, slamming it for its "utter weakness and incompetence" and arguing that it is "not a friend of freedom."His history with the international body on Manhattan's East Side doesn't start there -- as a real estate creature of New York, Trump has long interacted with the UN.On his first day attending the UN's yearly meeting, Trump tried to play nice. But it's clear that his skepticism for the organization remains. 506
