WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump officially named Amy Coney Barrett as his Supreme Court nominee over the weekend.What we know about herBarrett has long been rumored to be a possible Supreme Court justice and before being nominated, she was believed to be the favorite among conservatives to take the seat vacated by the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.Barrett is currently serving on the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and she spent several years as a professor at Notre Dame Law School, where she also earned her own law degree.Barrett is believed to be a true conservative, having formerly clerked for the late right-wing beacon Justice Antonin Scalia. If appointed to the high court, her rulings would likely be in line with her mentor. When accepting Trump’s nomination on Saturday, she said Scalia’s “judicial philosophy is mine, too.” Scalia helped popularize the idea of originalism, which follows the idea that courts should interpret the Constitution as it was originally intended by those who wrote it.In recent years, Barrett has sided with conservatives on cases involving immigration, guns rights and abortion.In a 2017 article, Barrett took issue with Chief Justice John Roberts’ ruling to keep the Affordable Care Act intact in 2012. Writing for the Norte Dame Law Journal, Barrett said “Chief Justice Roberts pushed the Affordable Care Act beyond its plausible meaning to save the statute."Barrett is also by legal standards young at only 48 years of age. Recently, both political parties have opted for younger justices to ensure they can serve for decades.Barrett and her husband, Jesse Barrett, a former federal prosecutor, have seven children, including two adopted from Haiti. WASHINGTON (AP) — The number of U.S. active-duty troops deployed to the U.S.-Mexico border has "pretty much peaked" at the current total of 5,800, the Pentagon's No. 2 official said Thursday.That is far below the 10,000 to 15,000 that President Donald Trump initially said would be needed to secure the border against what he called an "invasion" of migrants.Deputy Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan was asked about the military mission one day after his boss, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, visited troops near McAllen, Texas, and defended the use of the military for border security.Mattis said that within a week to 10 days, the troops currently deployed along the border in Texas, Arizona and California will have accomplished all the tasks initially requested by Customs and Border Protection, although he said additional requests were expected.Shanahan did not go into detail beyond saying substantial additional troops do not appear to be required."We've pretty much peaked in terms of the number of people that are down there," he told reporters at the Pentagon. He noted that the current mission is scheduled to end Dec. 15, adding, "That could always be amended."Mattis, while on his way to visit troops along the border in south Texas on Wednesday, declined to provide an estimate of how much the mission will cost.In his most extensive remarks about the hastily arranged mission, Mattis argued that it fits an historical pattern dating to early in the 20th century. He noted that President Woodrow Wilson deployed tens of thousands of National Guard and active duty troops to the border in 1916 in response to a Mexican military raid into the U.S. led by Gen. Francisco "Pancho" Villa.He noted that more recently, National Guard troops were used in border missions ordered by President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama, although not on the cusp of a midterm election.Mattis did not say how soon the mission might end.In addition to the 5,800 active duty troops in the border area, about 2,100 National Guard troops have been providing border support since April.Critics have questioned the wisdom of using the military on the border where there is no discernible security threat. Since the Nov. 6 election, Trump has said little about the matter, and no border threat has yet materialized.Asked whether he believes there is a security threat at the border that justifies the use of the active duty military, Mattis said he defers to the judgment of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, who joined him at the border Wednesday.Mattis said the short-term objective is to get sufficient numbers of wire and other barriers in place along the border as requested by Customs and Border Protection. The longer-term objective, he said, is "somewhat to be determined."Mattis said the mission, which does not include performing law enforcement tasks, was reviewed by Department of Justice lawyers and deemed a legal undertaking. WASHINGTON, D.C. – Since the start of his presidency, President Donald Trump and his administration have talked about getting manufacturing companies to come back to the United States, a process known as reshoring.Now, with unemployment at a historic high, another 1.5 million people filing jobless claims last week and still 19.5 million continued claims or people unemployed, the idea of reshoring is being revisited by Congress.Some on Capitol Hill are proposing reshoring incentives for companies in the next stimulus package.“There are a lot of potential ways that the administration and Congress could come up with tax subsidies and tax breaks for companies that produces here,” said Ed Yardeni, an economist and the president of Yardeni Research.While believes there could be some jobs created by companies reshoring in the U.S., it’s hard to say how many. That’s partly because, many companies that would consider reshoring would also consider using artificial intelligence at their production plants.“Clearly bringing back jobs would be great, but I don’t think we go back to the 70s and 80s, where we had a lot more people employed,” Yardeni added. “I would think that if you are reshoring and bring production back to the U.S., you are going to use state of the art technology to do that, so I’m not sure it is going to be a huge win-win in terms of jobs.”Experts, including Yardeni, believe companies that would most likely consider reshoring would be those in the pharmaceutical and technology sector. Their reason for the move is likely less for job creation and more because of national security concerns.Either way, the way to get more jobs out of reshoring may be by doing more than just incentivizing companies to come back to the U.S.“Maybe what we need is to combine reshoring with really focusing on reeducating a lot of the labor force so that they can manage the robots, build the robots, program the robots, as opposed to doing the job the robots are doing,” said Yardeni. 2004

WASHINGTON D.C. -- Environmental regulators announced Monday that they will ease emissions standards for cars and trucks, according to the Associated Press.Current regulations from the EPA require vehicles by 2025 to get 36 miles per gallon in real-world driving. Regulators said the reason for the change is that the timeline put in place by the Obama administration wasn’t appropriate and set standards too high.The announcement will affect vehicles for model years 2022 through 2025.The changes could set up a legal battle with California, which has the power to set its own pollution and gas mileage standards.Other states also follow rules set by California and together account for more than a third of the vehicles sold in the U.S. Currently state and federal standards are the same.EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt said in a statement Monday that the agency will work with California to finalize new standards.The agency said Monday that regulations set under the Obama administration, "presents challenges for auto manufacturers due to feasibility and practicability, raises potential concerns related to automobile safety, and results in significant additional costs on consumers, especially low-income consumers."Automakers praised the decision, saying current requirements would have cost them billions, raising vehicle prices."This was the right decision, and we support the Administration for pursuing a data-driven effort and a single national program as it works to finalize future standards," said Gloria Bergquist, vice president, communications and public affairs for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, in a statement. "We appreciate that the Administration is working to find a way to both increase fuel economy standards and keep new vehicles affordable to more Americans."Meanwhile, environmentalists warned the rollbacks will make U.S. cars more expensive to fill up, a growing concern in California."No one in America is eager to buy a car that gets worse gas mileage and spews more pollution from its tailpipe," said Fred Krupp, president of the Environmental Defense Fund.
