SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Rising temperatures are increasing the wildfire danger in San Diego County. Monday morning's fires near Webster are the third group of fires sparked by homeless people in a matter of months. Neighbors in the area say they are getting nervous. Edna Wallis has been living in her home for three years. As the weather heats up, she says the brush behind her home becomes a safety hazard. "I start rinsing the patio when the days are extremely hot and dry," says Wallis. "We rinse it, but it's not much."Less than five minutes from her home, a fire sparked off Home Avenue early Monday morning. Among brush and a lot of trash, crews worked to put out the flames that started inside of a homeless encampment. "I'm nervous. I'm very nervous because I'm very close to this area," says Wallis. "All of the neighborhood is dry."There have been other fires in the area as well. A homeless camp caught fire near I-805 and I-15 last week. A blaze also sparked in the same area in March. This fire slightly backed up traffic as crews work to put the flames out that started inside of a tent. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police officers responded to a call from a Pacific Beach woman who recorded a confrontation with a solicitor claiming to be a charity worker.Sarah Jarzabek said she began recording the incident at around 3 p.m. Saturday when the man became increasingly aggressive toward her and her neighbor."Scared to death, honestly," Jarzabek told 10News, after reflecting on the incident. Jarzabek and her friend Emily Herton were watching a movie at her home when a stranger knocked on her door. "He said that he came from Ohio, from Cleveland," Herton told 10News. "He said he was trying to raise money for some missionary work for children."The women admit they thought it was a joke but as the man continued with his story claiming to be a missionary and spreading God's love, they felt something did not seem right."He had four different I.D.s behind his one I.D.," Jarzabek said. When she told him that they did not have cash to give, she said the man angrily left her front door and marched toward her neighbor's home. That is when she started to record him on her phone. "I was going to warn [the neighbor], and then the guy, he flips a switch," Jarzabek said. The 12-second video shows the man lunging toward Jarzabek trying to cover the camera then take multiple swings. "He chases me across the street, and screaming that he's going to kill me," Jarzabek said. Jarzabek said she and Herton barricaded themselves inside her home and called 911. San Diego Police told 10News that the man was gone by the time an officer responded. An SDPD spokesperson says that because the man did not actually touch Jarzabek, officers did not file an official report. After the incident, Jarzabek posted the video on Facebook and recruited the help of their local Guardian Angels. Within hours, many people replied on the post about their recent encounters with the same man.The people commenting on the post said he was some sort of charity worker describing himself as a Christian missionary, domestic abuse organization volunteer, or reformed criminal organization volunteer. Commenters also described the man becoming confrontational when they refused to give him money. Other commenters claim to have seen him scoping out neighborhoods in Ocean Beach and other San Diego communities. Jarzabek hopes her post raises awareness about dealing with questionable door-to-door solicitors."It takes a lot to make me feel endangered, and this guy literally shook me," said Jarzabek.San Diego Police said they would like to speak with the man in the video. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Sailors from the USS Abraham Lincoln Strike Group are returning home after 294 days.Sailors left from their home port in Virginia in April and saw their deployment extended twice before coming to their new home port of Coronado.P02 John Aportela is one of the the 6,000 sailors that made up the strike group. Like many parents, he met his 6-month-old daughter for the first time.“I’m blessed to be back and I thank God for bringing us back safe." Sailors and Marines were involved with maritime security and combat missions while working with allies, including France, Bahrain, Malaysia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia and Oman.Those missions took the crew across the globe to places like Singapore, Saipan, Philippines, Japan, Israel, Thailand, Australia, Maldives, Hong Kong, and other locations. The strike group's Helicopter Marine Strike Squadron 79, or "The Griffins," returned to NAS Coronado Sunday ahead of the carrier's arrival. That team was supposed to return before Halloween, but had their employment extended.The group's 10-month deployment was the longest carrier deployment since the Cold War. During its deployment, the group has assisted operations in the U.S. 5th, 6th, and 7th Fleet areas of operation spanning the globe.Sailors are expected to pull into San Diego at about 10 a.m.The USS Abraham Lincoln coalition works to provide deterrence, promote peace and security, preserve freedom of the sea, and offer humanitarian and disaster response. 1661

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego grocery store employees rallied Friday due to ongoing negotiations with Kroger affecting some 50,000 workers at Ralphs, Vons and Albertsons in Southern California. “Workers have been without a contract since March, and after 26 failed negotiation sessions are demanding action,” said Todd Walters, President of UFCW Local 135.Some 200 workers were joined at Friday’s rally in Mission Hills by the Teamsters Joint Council 42, who agreed to stop all grocery product deliveries in the event of a strike, union leaders reported.“The negotiations process can take time to reach reasonable solutions that are best for our associates, our communities and our company,” said a spokesperson from Ralphs.The grocery store agreed to meet with the unions from Aug. 22 - 25 to continue negotiations. 823

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police arrested nine people suspected of driving under the influence Saturday night. According to the department, the checkpoint was held on the 1400 block of G Street between 11:30 p.m. Saturday and 3 a.m. Sunday. A total of 2,403 vehicles went through the checkpoint, police say. More than 400 vehicles were screened, 13 drivers evaluated and nine people arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. San Diego Police said in a news release that they plan to conduct another DUI checkpoint at an undisclosed location on Halloween. The department also plans to increase patrol on Halloween to screen for intoxicated drivers. This week, companies like Uber are offering tips on how to get around for Halloween.
