Starting a business together was an idea they had kicked around for years, but never had the time to flesh it out. That is, until Bryon lost his job.“Definitely had the time to slow things down and plan things out,” added Bryon.The business has taken off, providing more than a good income for the siblings.“I feel free,” he explained. "I feel a lot freer than I did a few months ago. Doing what I love, like on my own time, creating my own dishes and being financially sustained. It’s awesome.”According to data provided by the U.S. Census Bureau, across the country, there have been at least 3.2 million new business applications filed this year. This time last year, that number was around 2.7 million.“It is hard to know at the moment as to whether or not this trend that we have seen, that is very discernible, is going to continue and it is hard to know exactly what the real impact over time is going to be,” said John Dearie, founder of the Center for American Entrepreneurship in Washington, D.C.Dearie believes new businesses like Sweet Pickle Books and Pasta Packs have an uphill battle. However, if these businesses and other new ones survive, they could be a major factor in our economic recovery.“Startups are disproportionately responsible, they are not the only source, but they are the major source, but disproportionately responsible for the innovations that drive economic growth and job creation in the economy,” explained Dearie.For now, they are helping at least three people survive and find purpose in this pandemic. 2497

"It's like that one time that we can all come together whether we're Democrat or Republican."After months of divisive politics, King and other musicians came together through Play For The Vote. Their mission: lift worries and burdens from voters' shoulders and create a different feeling at the polls this Election Day."With everything we've been through since the beginning of this year, you can turn a negative into a positive," said King of this moment in history.Poll workers across Atlanta expected crowds of voters lined up around the building, but the day was quiet. The average wait was under five minutes. For musicians Ally Jenkins and Brian Raddock, performing on Election Day, even to a small crowd, was a moment of triumph, especially in a time where their life’s work has been slipping through their fingers."It's been a nightmare," said Jenkins, a violinist. "Everything was canceled within like three days of each other, and this is tens of thousands of dollars of income and also our purpose for living."Her longtime friend and fellow musician, Brian Raddock, feels her pain. "Devastating is putting it lightly, and in a lot of ways, and it's just because we're both freelancers. It's really show to show," he said.These two have played on Broadway and across New York City until COVID-19 shut their livelihoods down."I feel the most alive when I'm playing music, and to not have that with other people, it's it just kind of makes you feel a little bit lost when you're having to do it by yourself," said Raddock.But Election Day brought back a glimpse of normalcy. "To see some people smile while we're playing music and to use art to really help bring some more beauty into the world, I can't really even describe what it means. It's just wonderful," said Raddock.Their audience, mostly poll workers, agreed. "It was fun. It lifted your spirits to hear them. They're so talented, they're so good, and then to hear their plight, that's just something you hadn't even thought about," said Pattie Harris, an election volunteer.Thousands of musicians across the country are experiencing the same struggle. ASHEVILLE, North Carolina (WLOS) —Police have identified their suspect after a standoff put multiple establishments near the well-known Biltmore Estate on lockdown Wednesday morning.Asheville Police say they entered a foot pursuit with Gary Adrian Church, 42, of Ronda, N.C., at approximately 9:34 a.m. local time. Church had open warrants for several robberies in Asheville, as well as Burke and Iredell Counties.The suspect fled on foot and into the woods behind the DoubleTree Hotel and TGIFriday’s in Biltmore Village.As a safety precaution, several businesses in the area, including MAHEC, DoubleTree Hotel, TGIFriday’s and the Hampton Inn were all placed on lockdown.The Asheville Police Department’s Crisis Negotiation Team responded to the area and stayed in constant communication with Church. After approximately 3 hours, the suspect was taken into custody with no further incident.No injuries were sustained by officers or the suspect.Police say rumors of an active shooter that had been circulating on social media were incorrect. 1055
