SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - The San Diego Public Library is on the road to reopening. Tuesday, eleven locations have reopened, but only for people who placed holds prior to the closure that started in March. Those items can now be picked up with a contact-free system where the person calls when they arrive at the location, then a librarian puts the books on a table outside for the person to pick up. Starting next week, people can put new holds on items. Director Misty Jones said they’ll reopen more after that depending on county orders and plans to keep books virus-free. The future of the libraries will depend on some unknown’s, including how the library can help the school system, what studies reveal about how long the virus can live on items and more. “We adapt to the way that people need the service from us and we’ll adapt and we’ll pivot and we’ll be able to offer that incredible customer service like we always have,” said Jones. The eleven locations currently open as of May 26 are Carmel Valley, College-Rolando, La Jolla/Riford, Logan Heights, Mira Mesa, Mission Hills-Hillcrest/Knox, Mission Valley, Point Loma/Hervey, Rancho Bernardo, San Ysidro and Valencia Park/Malcolm X. These locations are open 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The libraries have adapted with coronavirus, creating online programs like virtual story time, ebooks and audiobooks and online book clubs. Many people also wore collars, like RBG. A memorial on the steps of the Superior Court grew, filled with signs, flowers and candles.“It’s shaken some folks and we just want to come together and share our strength because ultimately we believe there is strength in unity,” said Lesa Thode, secretary for Women’s March San Diego.Thode said they wanted to give people a place to grieve and remember RBG together. She added that there will be more memorials in the near future that will be more accommodating for the Jewish community, who are in the middle of Rosh Hashanah. One attendee of the vigil was Felicia Rawlins, co-founder of the group Encinitas for Equality.“Came down here to grieve our loss of RGB and take a moment to really feel the feels before we start taking action,” said Rawlins.Many other attendees echoed the need to process, then use the legacy of Ruth Bader Ginsburg to continue forward with the change she started. 1359

San Diego (KGTV)- It’s been one year since the deadly bluff collapse in Encinitas, killing three members of the same family. The husband and father of two of the women is still calling for changes along the beach.Dr. Pat Davis says this past year has been tough after losing wife Julie Davis, daughter Annie Clave and sister-in-law Elizabeth Charles.The family was out for a day at the beach last August when suddenly the bluff gave out.“It was important for me that this kind of accident never is able to happen to any other family,” says Davis.Davis says since the tragic accident, there has been little change at Grandview beach. “There’s very few new signs warning people about these cliffs.”Davis is calling on local and state leaders to stabilize the bluffs. He’s hoping a new bill will help. S.B. 1090 offers solutions like sand replenishment. It currently sits in the Senate.“We got over 4,000 signatures in one month of people supporting the bill.”In the meantime, Davis is thanking the community for its continued support. A park bench sits at the top of Grandview Beach, honoring his family members.“Not that there’s an easy side of learning to live with the loss and one of your children but, certainly family support and community support has been a great help in allowing my family to move forward.”Davis says community members also came together to place another memorial bench in their neighborhood. 1423

(KGTV) -- After being under a federally mandated quarantine at MCAS Miramar for two weeks, Steven and Michele Smith are finally heading home to Paradise, California."Tomorrow morning we're putting our bags on the other side of that door and we're heading on a bus to the airport. We're going to rent a car and drive 600 miles home," said Steven Smith in a Skype interview with 10News.The two would have been back home weeks ago after their planned cruise to Hawaii, but due to a coronavirus outbreak on the Grand Princess cruise ship they were on, they and all other passengers had to go into quarantine once their ship finally docked in Oakland."My sister is taking care of my birds, my daughter is taking care of my dog, and then my friend is taking care of our cat," said Michele Smith.The Smiths will complete their 14-day quarantine Tuesday and drive home Wednesday. Health and Human Services officials tell us nearly 50 people quarantined at Miramar left Tuesday, and the remaining 130 people will be discharged over the next two days. For nearly two weeks, their temperatures were checked twice a day. The Smiths mostly remained inside of a room at the Consolidated Bachelor Quarters on base, had food delivered three times a day, and only stepped outside occasionally."You can go out and walk outside, they have a fenced-in area that they keep us inside of," said Steven Smith.They were tested for COVID-19 and got their results back Monday."It was just a weird test, to have somebody shove something up your nose that far back into your nasal cavity," Steven Smith explained."But we tested negative!" added an excited Michele. "So, we are virus free 100 percent."They are thrilled to be heading home healthy and say their positive attitude and sense of humor helped get them through this unusual time.Michele leaves others just starting their quarantine with this advice, "I would recommend to all the people out there, now is not the time to bring up negative things or things that could create conflict, but just to love on each other, laugh and enjoy each other." 2101
