HAYWARD, California (AP) — Robots that can flip burgers, make salads, and even bake bread are in growing demand as virus-wary kitchens try to put some distance between workers and customers. Starting this fall, the White Castle burger chain will test a robot arm that can cook french fries, corn dogs. The robot, dubbed Flippy, is made by Pasadena, California-based Miso Robotics. In June, Flippy began working full-day shifts - 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at CaliBurger in Pasadena.“We have demonstrated that Flippy can work on our standard equipment and meet high volume demand with substantially greater cooking consistency than our kitchens that have not yet installed Flippy,” said Tony Lomelino, Chief Technology Officer of CaliBurger in a press release. “Additionally, we have developed a program to retrain our restaurant staff to serve as ‘Chef Techs’ that work alongside Flippy and monitor the related software and hardware systems. We expect these skills will be useful for employees across our chain to secure higher income jobs that require human/robotic interaction in the future restaurant industry and other industries.”Robot food service was a trend even before the coronavirus pandemic struck. Home listings in more cities will no longer use the word "master" to describe large bedrooms and bathrooms.In June, the Houston Association of Realtors decided to instead use the word “primary” to describe the largest bedroom or bathroom in a home listing.The association, HAR for short, updated listings on the website through mid-June. In a statement, the organization said the change has been “raised and considered for many years” and was one of nine requests submitted from HAR members for discussion at recent meetings about updating MLS listings. Other requests included things like electric vehicle charging stations and balcony details.“The overarching message was that some members were concerned about how the terms might be perceived by some other agents and consumers. Based on the discussion that took place, more members viewed the terms as sexist than racist, although some did view them as racist,” the statement said. “The origin of the terms is debated, and we are not saying they are rooted in slavery.”The word “master” is not banned within the organization and members, only in their online listings. Realtors may choose to use “master” on their own materials selling a home.HAR told members the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development has already advised that use of the term “master bedroom” or “master bathroom” is not discriminatory and does not violate Fair Housing laws.Some builders have already dropped the term years ago, HAR said. It takes just 10 minutes to fill out and can be done online.Why is it so important? Its results are used to determine how much money municipalities gets from Washington for everything from housing to hospitals, roads, bridges, and schools.
