Tara Batista spent a week in the hospital after visiting one of her favorite spas for a pedicure. Now she's tethered to a picc line for six weeks and under the daily care of a home health nurse.Batista, who sings at Puerto Rican festivals, says the ordeal has turned her life upside down emotionally, physically and economically.Tampa-based WFTS asked if there was anything different about this pedicure and Batista said she told the woman working on her feet to ease up a bit because it felt like the instruments were digging too far into her skin.Batista says she began to feel weak hours after leaving Nail Image in Tampa. By the next day she experienced extreme fatigue and pains began shooting up her leg.A day and a half later family members drove Batista to the emergency room when part of her foot turned black and she could not stand on her left leg. Doctors diagnosed her with a severe infection. Batista underwent surgery and remained in the hospital for a week. WFTS obtained her medical records which cite a deep injury triggered by a bacterial infection on her left big toe.WFTS took the hospital report to Nail Image along with the receipt from her pedicure. The owner refused to comment. There is no conclusive proof that the pedicure caused the infection.Lee Timberlake instructs students at the Artistic Nails and Beauty academy in Tampa. She spends 155 hours of a 240 hour curriculum teaching sanitizing and disinfecting procedures.Timberlake who has taught nail technicians for 10 years says instruments should be scrubbed then placed into a disinfectant between every customer. The Big 12 will permit its teams to play one nonconference football game this year to go along with their nine league contests as plans for the pandemic-altered season continue to fall into place. The Big 12 university presidents signed off on the conference's scheduling model, which gives schools the option to play one nonconference game at home. The 10-team Big 12 already plays a nine-game conference schedule. Unlike other Power Five conference that have switched to either exclusively (Big 12 Pac-12 and SEC) or mostly (ACC) league games this season, the Big 12 could not add more conference games without teams playing each other more than once.“I would like to salute the work of our university presidents and chancellors, athletics directors, coaches, medical advisors and administrators who have worked tirelessly and collaboratively during these extraordinary times,” said Commissioner Bob Bowlsby. “We believe this change provides the best opportunity going forward. Beto O'Rourke, topping him 52% to 45% among likely voters, a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS finds.Just 9% of likely Texas voters say there's a chance they could change their mind about the Senate contest before Election Day, although O'Rourke's voters are more apt to be locked in to their choice (92% say their minds are made up) than are Cruz's backers (87% say they've made a final decision).The two candidates are set to debate Tuesday night, and O'Rourke will participate in a CNN town hall later this week. O'Rourke's challenge has drawn tens of millions in donations, forcing Republicans to play defense in one of the few Republican Senate seats in play this election cycle. President Donald Trump even plans to host a rally for his former rival's benefit.The President could be an asset among those planning to vote in Texas. Trump's approval rating is net negative statewide, with 50% of adults disapproving of his handling of the presidency vs. 41% who approve. Among likely voters, however, 49% approve of Trump's job performance and 48% disapprove.The gender gap in this race is tighter than what CNN has measured in nationwide polling on the House generic ballot and in other Senate contests. In four other critical battlegrounds, the gender gap has been 30 points or higher in three states, and stood at 21 in the fourth. In this contest, it's a narrower 18 points. O'Rourke holds just a 2-point edge among women, the smallest for a Democrat among women in the states CNN has polled so far. The next closest is Jacky Rosen's 14-point lead among women in Nevada earlier this month in her race against Republican Sen. Dean Heller.In Texas, the race gap appears more meaningful than the gender gap. Latino voters break sharply in O'Rourke's favor, 62% to 35%, while white voters favor Cruz by a 2-to-1 margin, 66% to 33%.Likely voters in Texas place immigration at the top of their issue list: 26% call it the most important issue in deciding their vote, while 23% call the economy their top priority. Cruz leads among both sets of voters. O'Rourke has a wide edge among the 19% of voters who call health care their top issue. Eleven percent say their top issue is national security, 8% gun policy and 5% the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.Both Senate candidates hold net-positive favorability ratings with voters in Texas generally, and that holds among those most likely to vote. TAMPA, Fla. — A volunteer at Carole Baskin's Big Cat Rescue in Tampa was bitten by a tiger Thursday morning and sustained "an extreme injury to her arm."According to the organization, Candy Couser — who has volunteered with the animal sanctuary for five years — was injured while feeding a 3-year-old Tiger named Kimba on Thursday.According to a press release, Baskin said that Kimba nearly tore Couser's arm "off her shoulder" as she tried to feed him. The volunteers, according to the release, helped Couser stem the bleeding until an ambulance arrived and took her to St. Joseph's Hospital.Couser is expected to survive the attack.In the release, Baskin said that Couser had reached into a cage to open a door that had been clipped shut and that she should have contacted a supervisor when she realized the door was clipped. She also said Couser had violated protocols by putting her arm inside a cage with a tiger."Candy was still conscious and insisted that she did not want Kimba Tiger to come to any harm for this mistake," Baskin said in her press release. "(Kimba) is being placed in quarantine for the next 30 days as a precaution, but was just acting normal due to the presence of food and the opportunity."Baskin and Big Cat Rescue were featured prominently in the massively popular Netflix docuseries "Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness.""Tiger King" spent much of its time focusing on the feud between Baskin and fellow big cat park owner Joe Exotic, which included accusations by him that Baskin was behind the disappearance of her ex-husband, Don Lewis. Baskin has denied those allegations and has not been charged with a crime in connection with Lewis' death.In January 2019, Joe Exotic was sentenced to 22 years in prison in connection with a murder-for-hire plot in an attempt to have Baskin killed.
