Workers can also take buyout packages and retire.Sources say no other plants will close under the proposed contract.The union began negotiations on Monday with Ford for a new contract. There has been no work stoppage with Ford employees, a stark contrast to the 40-day work stoppage General Motors employees wagered last month.Plant closings were a major issue between GM and the UAW after the company announced it would close four plants this year. Those plants included Warren (Michigan) Transmission, Lordstown, Ohio Assembly and Detroit Hamtramck Assembly. Detroit Hamtramck will remain open, building all-electric trucks and vans. Hundreds of workers in Lordstown had to move to seven other states to continue working for GM. Workers in Warren have transferred to Flint and other plants in distant cities.The Ford UAW Council will travel to Detroit from 18 states and will vote whether to send the Tentative Agreement to the rank and file tomorrow. With the rising cost of higher education, that is leaving fewer dollars in students' pockets. One example of the effect rising costs are possibly having on students is some students are going hungry. According to a Temple University study, nearly 36 percent of students were considered food insecure at some point in the proceeding 30 days of the study. Food insecurity is defined as limited or uncertain access to nutritional food. The study involved 66 institutions across 20 states and the District of Columbia. Four and two-year institutions were included in Temple's study. Also alarming according to the study was that 36 percent of college students were housing insecure, and 9 percent were homeless. And despite lower costs at two-year colleges, a higher percentage of students were facing food and housing insecurities. The study claimed 42 percent of students at two-year colleges faced food insecurities, compared to 36 percent at four-year schools. Although the costs are lower at community colleges, researchers believe the rising cost of college is a significant factor causing students to go hungry. "Prices have gone up over time," Sara Goldrick-Rab, a professor of higher education policy at Temple and the lead author of the report, told the Washington Post. on Interstate 41/94 killed two semi truck drivers and seriously injured two other people.Racine County Sheriff Chris Schmaling said as a semi truck heading south on the interstate tried to change lanes they hit a construction barrier that pushed the median into the northbound lanes.Three other passenger vehicles heading north collided as a result. Schmaling said a second semi truck heading north tried to avoid the collision causing it to veer off the road and crashed before bursting into flames.The sheriff said they received several 911 calls reporting the crash and explosions. He attributed the explosion sounds to tires in the crash heating up then blowing up."In my 24 years on this job and this is the worst accident I’ve ever been a part of," said Schmaling.The crash shut down I-94 and frontage roads to traffic for several hours causing lenthy back ups. The sheriff said emergency responders had difficulty getting to the scene.Schmaling urged drivers to be cautious driving in extreme construction zones, adding a small mistake can have a devastating impact."These are interstate speeds were talking about and ultimately it cost him his life and the life of another human being, and I hope and pray that the lives of the others are right now in the hospital getting care don’t lose their lives as well.
