SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The county's flu death toll inched closer to 70 last week, while lab-confirmed flu cases continued to decline, the county's Health and Human Services announced today.The county received one report of a flu-related death last week, a 74-year-old North County man who had additional medical issues. County health officials did not disclose whether he had received this flu season's vaccine. The county's flu death toll now sits at 68.The county confirmed 86 flu cases last week, down from 114 cases during the prior week. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials reported a record 1,546 COVID-19 infections today, the 14th consecutive day that more than 600 new cases were reported, along with 16 additional deaths.The county's coronavirus death toll now stands at 984, and the cumulative case total rose to 74,361.The previous one-day case record was last Saturday, when 1,478 new COVID-19 cases were logged, topping the previous record of 1,091 set Friday. On Sunday, 939 new cases were reported.San Diego County fell deeper into the most restrictive purple tier of the state's four-tiered reopening plan Tuesday with an unadjusted 21.5 new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego State University will not begin any of its fall sports earlier than Sept. 26 due to the ongoing pandemic, the university's athletics department announced Thursday.This follows guidance from the Mountain West Conference Board of Directors, which decided Wednesday to adjust conference team schedules to allow additional monitoring of ongoing COVID-19 developments and adjustments to keep student-athletes safe.The SDSU Aztecs football team will shrink its schedule to 10 games and most other fall sports will only play conference opponents."The Mountain West athletic directors and the conference office worked hard to develop a game plan for fall sports that will allow student- athletes to have a great experience and take in to account their health and well-being," said SDSU Director of Athletics John David Wicker. "Starting the season later allows us the opportunity to learn from professional sports and other conferences and continue to develop the best protocols possible to ensure the safest return to play model possible."The conference and school schedules align with the NCAA Board of Governors' directions, also released this week. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Kmart store in Spring Valley is among 46 unprofitable outlets slated to start closeout sales this week, according to an announcement from the Sears Holding Corp.Five stores in California are among the 12 Kmart and 33 Sears stores slated to close by November. This includes the Kmart store at 935 Sweetwater Road in Spring Valley.The other California closures are Kmart stores in Los Angeles, Antioch, and Clovis and a Sears in Santa Cruz.Sears Holding Corp. owns both the Sears and Kmart chains. SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- San Diego lifeguards and firefighters Sunday rescued a surfer who suffered a medical emergency while in the water in the Bird Rock area, authorities said.At 12:36 p.m., lifeguards and firefighters from the San Diego Fire- Rescue Department responded to the cliffs near Calumet Park about a surfer experiencing an unknown medical emergency, Lt. Andy Lerum of Lifeguard Services said.The man in his 60s experienced a possible heart-related ailment or seizure, but rescuers were not sure of the exact nature of his medical emergency, Lerum said.The man swam to the beach, where he collapsed and lifeguards began tending to him, the lieutenant said. He was taken by stretcher about 30 yards to the bottom of the cliff.Firefighters used the department's Rescue 44 truck, equipped with a crane, to lift the surfer from the beach to the top of the cliff, Lerum said. An ambulance then took the man to a La Jolla hospital for evaluation. He was reportedly in stable condition. 995
