They've been color blind their whole lives, but thanks to a new pair of special glasses...that's about to change."Eventually when I got to high school, and realizing I was color blind was one of those things, like, oh, that's why I couldn't see that or I couldn't see that," said Ricardo Solano. Solano is one of about 300 million people around the world who are color blind.But as a research associate for a biotech company, there are days when he needs a little help from his colleagues."One of the main dyes they use is like red and green to differentiate things," he said, laughing. "It's a big contrast apparently, but I can't see the contrast."Solano has a good sense of humor about it, but that doesn't mean that he doesn't wish he could see the full elegance of a San Diego sunset."Just enjoying the beauty of life," he said. "I like to go backpacking and outdoors and stuff."For people who are color blind, pink looks gray, red looks brown and the colors red and green can look almost white-ish."Color vision deficiency is passed down through the father's genes," said Corey Ulz, an optician at Scripps Poway Eyecare. He said things can look dull and colors, washed out."It basically makes the colors that you and I would normally see normally not as vibrant," he said. "A little more muddled."On Monday, Solano and three other San Diegans got to see vibrant color, thanks to a special pair of enchroma glasses.Their reactions and expressions were heartwarming. "Red. I feel like a little kid right now haha," Solano said, smiling. The pair of glasses do more than make the world a little brighter. Solano hopes they'll make work easier, too. 1760

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A cold-case murder shrouded in mystery for decades just led investigators across the country, straight to a San Diego man. In June of 1984, 15-year-old Reesa Trexler was found naked, raped and stabbed to death in her grandparents' home in Salisbury, outside Charlotte, N.C. For more than 35 years there were few answers. Last year, Trexler's younger sister, Jodie Laird, appeared on the Dr. Phil show to quash long-held speculation that she was the killer. On the show, she took and passed a polygraph test.RELATED: 40-year-old San Diego cold case solved with help of genealogical databaseThis week, an emotional scene unfolded for her and other family as Salisbury police announced the case was solved. The big break was DNA evidence uploaded to a public genealogy website, which pointed to a suspect. According to search warrants obtained by WBTV, the suspect was Curtis Edward Blair, who was still living in San Diego when he died of heart failure in 2004. His body was exhumed from his grave in North Carolina for DNA samples, before police closed the case. Police say he was working at a Frito Lay plant near the home and had no connection to the family.RELATED: Suspect in 1986 Escondido cold case homicide arrested“Thirty-five years is a long time and we’re just as happy as we could possibly be," Laird said. “I know that we’ll never get all of the answers that we want, but at least we have the answers that we need.”10news uncovered some answers about his criminal resume during his time in San Diego. Records show he moved to the area two years after the murder. The 43-year-old was arrested and charged in 1986, accused of robbing two men, one at knife point. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 16-year-old boy was hospitalized Sunday after being shot in Chollas View. According to police, the shooting happened around 3:30 a.m. at an apartment complex near the 47th Street Trolley Station. 10News spoke to the victim's mother. She said her eldest son, Ricardo Dominguez was shot in the right hip. The bullet went through the main artery but missed his organs. She said Ricardo is now sedated at the ICU -- in serious but stable condition.Witnesses told police two cars were seen speeding from the area, but no word on whether or not the vehicles were involved in the shooting.Ricardo Dominguez's mother has set up a fundraiser page. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Three people suffered non-life threatening gunshot wounds this morning in the Mount Hope Community of San Diego, a police officer said.A group of people were in the area of Market and Denby streets about 1:45 a.m. when several gunshots were heard and three people were shot, said Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.A 39-year-old man was shot in the abdomen, a 32-year-old man was shot multiple times in the buttocks and legs and a 30-year-old man suffered a graze wound to his lips, Heims said.All three men were transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening gunshot wounds and police had no suspect information. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A beach on Naval Base Point Loma went from unsafe and unappealing to a sandy destination that also houses a new oceanic ecosystem.In the 1980s, Smuggler’s Cove was hit with erosion and until recently, was rocky and uneven.“This beach had virtually eroded away,” said Captain Ken Franklin, Commanding Officer of Naval Base Point Loma.In the past three years, a revitalization project has been in the works, with different additions to the beach coming from unique places. The Navy’s environmental team had the idea to use rubble and cement from a fuel pier that had been demolished to build an underwater reef. They planted eelgrass along the reef, restoring the habitat.“That actually enhances the fish production, enhances the overall ecology of the system. So it actually enhances and helps some of the protected species, with the birds, gives them food to eat, and overall enhance the production of the area,” said Navy marine biologist Sean Suk.Since the work started, the eelgrass has seen an estimated 700-1,000% increase, and 15-18 fish species have been spotted swimming around the new ecosystem.In addition, the Navy brought in sand that the Coast Guard had leftover from their dredging they had finished. This created a sandy beach, compared to the rocky area that was there before.“It’s a win for everybody. It’s a win the fleet, it’s a win for the warfighter, the family and for the environment, so all and all nirvana from my perspective,” said Franklin.A spokesperson for the Navy said biologist Mitchell A Perdue was one of the major driving forces behind the project, but he passed away suddenly last year, so the completion of the upgrade is in honor of him. 1702
