PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — A handful of parents are fuming over a sex ed course being taught in their children’s school and the religious group that's teaching it.Mona Mangat, the mom of an 8th-grader at Thurgood Marshall Middle School in Pinellas County, Florida, said she and other parents are “angry about this, upset about this and trying to figure out how this is possible.”Mangat knew one thing for sure: Her daughter would opt out of a sex ed course being taught Thursday by the Christian faith-based group More2Life.“It’s shocking when you find out that faith-based groups are providing this information in schools. I had no idea. I thought that was not allowed in the United States, but I guess I was wrong," she explained.Mangat said she worries the curriculum is biased especially since the group is linked to a pro-life crisis pregnancy center in Largo called New Life Solutions. The More2Life group focuses on abstinence in their presentation to schools.In one presentation they told students, “Sex is like fire. It's safe in its proper context like a committed marriage, just like it's safe in a fireplace.”In another, while speaking about the high rate of STDs, a leader told students, "Have you ever played duck, duck, goose? Now it's like duck, duck, chlamydia." Scripps station WFTS in Tampa took parents' concerns straight to Jason Dorr, the director of More2Life, who said their program does not discuss religion."Our message is completely a health message,” Dorr explained.Dorr added, in line with Florida rules, they encourage abstaining from sex before marriage. The organization has spent 19 years talking to students about the consequences of STDs and teen pregnancy. “We always make this clear: We are not here to tell you what to do. This is an option for your life and we want to present that to you so you can make your own choices," Dorr added. “We are teaching them to have a healthy life and reach their goals without the consequences that can affect their future, so it's adding to what they're already learning at home.”Dorr also said 95 percent of teachers give them high ratings and highly recommend their program to other classrooms.Mangat is fighting to get the program out of schools and swapped out for one that focuses purely on facts.“The choice to have sex is intensely personal. You have to have complete information to make that decision," Mangat added.The Pinellas County School district said students are able to opt out of the presentations. Pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly plans on distributing a treatment for coronavirus patients this week. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just gave it the green light.The antibody treatment is for patients over the age of 65 who have mild to moderate symptoms. Patients who are 12 years and up are also eligible if they have an underlying health condition.The FDA approval comes at a time when cases are going up again and hospitals are struggling to treat so many patients.Infectious disease experts say one of the biggest challenges for hospitals right now is to figure out where they want to administer the treatment.It is given through an IV and usually, IV treatments are given in an outpatient setting to cancer patients.“If you're talking about hospitals that have infusion centers for cancer and chemotherapy, that's not generally a place where they're going to feel comfortable taking COVID-19 patients in the contagious phase of their disease, because they also have highly immuno-compromised patients there,” said Dr. Shira Doron, a hospital epidemiologist at Tufts Medical Center.Some hospitals in the U.S. already have the resources and space to administer the treatment to COVID-19 patients, but many still don't.Another option would be to administer it in an emergency room, while still following the same criteria for who receives it.While there are guidelines for who receives it, cases are rising. That could add another limitation to how many patients get the new antibody treatment.“And then how will patients be referred to that facility? Will doctors know about that? And defining exactly which patients will benefit from this is somewhat still up in the air,” said Doron.Health and Human Services will be responsible for distributing the treatment. Participating in a town hall discussion on Monday in the key battleground state of Florida, Joe Biden said he would implement a mandate of masks on federal property if elected president amid the coronavirus pandemic. The mandate would apply to places such as national buildings, Social Security offices and federal courthouses. Biden’s remarks stood in stark contrast with President Donald Trump, who made a point to remove his mask when he entered the White House on Monday after returning from the hospital. Trump is currently recovering from the coronavirus at the White House after a three-day stay at Walter Reed Medical Center.The primetime town hall featuring the former vice president was aired on NBC.Biden conceded that the president does not have the power to call for a nationwide mask mandate in all 50 states, but he would use the bully pulpit of the presidency to compel state and local leaders to enforce mask wearing in public spaces.“I would go out and I would call all of the governors to the White House, some probably wouldn’t come, and I would say… ‘take responsibility,’” Biden said. “Take responsibility and lay out the guidelines. One of the problems is this president said ‘I take no responsibility.’ Literally.“'It is not my responsibility.’ So if it is not his responsibility, he talked about this being like a time of war, we are under attack. Police said a two-year old boy died after ingesting medication at his grandmother’s house in Henrico County, Virginia Friday afternoon, according to WTVR-TV.Lt. Richard Brown with Henrico Police said the two-year-old swallowed up to 12 adult-dosage pills before he was transported to VCU Medical Center where he died.Officials said his body has been transported to the medical examiner’s office to determine his exact cause of death.When reporters arrived at the home Saturday, social services workers were inside investigating.The family’s spokesperson, Ricky Johnson, said he could not provide additional information since Kejon Edwards’ death is still under investigation.“We suffered a loss and we are just asking that you pray for this family and pray for this community,” said Johnson with the Ricky Johnson and Friends Foundation. “The family is asking for privacy right now, while we try to figure this out. We’re just lost for words right now.”?Neighbors said the victim has two siblings.“It’s a tragedy and I’m going to miss him,” one neighbor said.Officers said the incident remains under investigation.
