Women make up roughly 10 percent of our nation’s veterans and face different challenges when reintegrating back into society after serving.“We’ve done a better job, I think, with men. Because we often associate military service with men. When we think about trauma and PTSD, and even combat, we think about men," says Akilah Templeton, president and CEO of Veterans Village of San Diego.The nonprofit serves thousands of veterans.“We get out into the real world and it’s a culture shock," said Erin Smalley, who joined the Navy when she was 24.Smalley says military life became more complicated when she had a baby as a single mom."It was definitely a challenge, being away from her, having to figure out who would watch her. Having strangers, chief’s wives watch her, that I didn’t know but a couple of weeks," said Smalley.Stationed with only three other women, Smalley felt alone as she navigated work and motherhood.“Having nobody to talk to, having nobody to confide in, nobody to feel what I felt, was definitely a challenge," she recalled. And while Smalley joined the Navy 20 years ago, it’s only been three months since she started working through the trauma that ultimately ended her military career."I had some sexual trauma in the military. I was raped in the military. After that, I had a substance abuse problem and failed a urine analysis and was discharged," she recounted.Smalley tried burying the trauma while serving and for many years after.“The only way I knew how to cope was to numb myself, and that’s where the substance abuse came in, just you know, it was completely numbing to me. It was easy not to think about it, not worry about it. But it cost me a lot," said Smalley.“We have to do a better job at offering services to women veterans in spaces where they feel comfortable and in spaces where they feel safe," stressed Templeton.When Smalley left the Navy, she didn’t know there were resources available. “Depression, mental health issues, but then you add to that the stressors that come with being a mom," said Templeton. "You're building a young person's self-esteem and trying to maintain your own. That's rough."The VA says female veterans are twice as likely to experience homelessness than civilian women. And 1 in 3 female veterans reports experiencing military sexual trauma.“I didn’t want to tell anyone. I was ashamed. I felt like I was not only letting myself down but letting the country down, by being discharged the way I was," said Smalley.After years of substance abuse, Smalley went to federal prison for attempting to smuggle people into the country.Then, she found Veterans Village, where she's now getting counseling and help for addiction. “I’m 58 days clean, sober. I’m on track to getting my daughter back. She’s living with my mom," said Smalley.After 20 years, Smalley is no longer facing her trauma alone, rebuilding her life one day at a time. 2910

You could call them a saving grace. One type of business was deemed essential at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic that helped families living paycheck to paycheck – pawnshops."This is actually our history," Andrew Charbonneau said as he showed off an Edison cylinder phonograph at his shop, Palm Beach Pawn King in North Palm Beach, Florida. Typically searching for precious antiques, Charbonneau said this year, treasure hunting took a backseat in the pawnshop industry."I think we're all in a situation we're not used to, so everybody is doing what we call [to survive]," said Charbonneau, who also owns two other pawnshops, American Gun and Pawn in West Palm Beach and Andrew's Coin and Jewelry in Delray Beach.Across his three shops, Charbonneau saw firsthand what the lockdown in March did to local families."We had a lot of nervous individuals that have never pawned before in their life, and they were in a situation where they had nowhere to go, no other avenues to obtain cash," he said.Some bank branches were temporarily closed, hours reduced in others, but those in the pawning business were open."The essential aspect of what we do was very important for the community because the bank will not lend you on your cellphone, won't lend you on your computer," said Charbonneau.The COVID-19 pandemic put thousands of people in Palm Beach County out of work.According to statistics from the state Department of Economic Opportunity, the city hit hardest was Boynton Beach. In just 30 days, the unemployment rate increased from 4.7 in March to 17.5 in April."They would come in and say, 'I lost my job because of the pandemic,'" said Bobby Gloyd, an employee at G & C Pawn Shop in Boynton Beach.Unemployment rates from the state show Delray Beach had the second-highest increase in unemployment within Palm Beach County, going from 4.2 unemployment rate in March to 15.4 in April. Riviera Beach was the third, jumping from a 5.5 unemployment rate in March to 15.1 the next month.Gloyd said that people pawn the items that hold the most value to pay their mortgages and rent."Gold is always good. It's easier to sell and also has a lot of value," said Gloyd."Family heirlooms, anything jewelry related that has emotionally passed down value, meaning sentimental value. We did see a lot of that. It wasn't so much about selling. They were still nervous about losing it because they didn't know if they'd ever be able to pick it back up," said Charbonneau.When those stimulus and unemployment checks did start coming through, pawnshops say business shifted to sales. They were selling laptops, gaming systems, anything that could help people get through quarantine."Everybody was looking for laptops, I guess when the kids were being homeschooled," said Gloyd."PS4 was one of the big things. If I had 500 of them, [they] would have sold within a week, at the time period," added Charbonneau.Musical instruments, tools for home improvements were all among the hot commodities. And then there were items people couldn't find at retail stores."Bike sales were very, very high. I would say that was a 75%-plus increase. Work out equipment again; we're not used to selling that. It usually sits on the shelves, so there was a lot of increases in fields that I would never project in the future will be the same,” said Charbonneau.Most pawnshop owners said people not only came back for their pawned items when they got their stimulus checks, but they also bought more."iPad air: a lot of people were looking for that," said Charbonneau."The newest thing is like sneakers. ... They've been probably easier to sell than tools. It's nuts," added Gloyd.With 2020 coming to an end, pawnshop owners like Charbonneau, who have been in the business for 40 plus years, say they could have never predicted business trends this year. With unemployment filings continuing to come in, many are unsure when or if they can pay the rent. Evictions are happening across the U.S. and experts predict it could get worse.“Most states, at this point, I would say have some sort of statewide policy in place. Although again many of those are expiring,” said Lavar Edmonds, a Research Specialist at Eviction Lab.Edmonds is talking about evictions. As state moratoriums end, the impacts on renters and landlords are unknown.“I would imagine you're looking at millions of households that are at risk of facing eviction in the coming months,” he said.The Eviction Lab has a team of researchers tracking the issue. Two years ago, they published a national database of evictions based on records. Now, they are looking at how states are handling COVID-19 and evictions.“In some places that has meant a stopping of eviction hearings,” Edmonds said. He continued to note it could also mean some places are stopping filings, others late fees, and a bunch of different rules.More than 40 million people have filed for unemployment since COVID-19 hit the U.S. according to the U.S. Labor Department. Studies show nearly 78% of renters were able to pay their April rent in the first week of the month, according to the National Multifamily Housing Council.This could be due to additional weekly payments provided by the CARES Act to those who are unemployed.“I now am on unemployment,” Desiree Kane said. “I’m concerned about that though, because the 0 a week pandemic support ends on July 31.”Back in March, Kane, a freelancer, found herself in a situation many others also experienced.“Over the course of 72 hours in the middle of March, I lost 100% of my clients and leads because of COVID,” she said. “I went from living by myself to living in an apartment where we’re splitting the rent multiple ways so that its affordable. But it’s a very small apartment and a lot of people.”Kane helped create the Colorado rent strike group on Facebook, a group calling for change with evictions and homelessness in the state. While she continues to look for a job, she fears that July 31 end date.“They’re calling it a cliff, and I very much feel that cliff,” Kane said.It's a cliff that landlords are also concerned about.“I have talked to a lot of landlords though that are worried their tenants aren't going to be able to pay their rent,” said Tom Orlando, owner of real estate firm Housing Helpers. “Business slowed down quite a bit.”While each rental situation is different, for many property owners, no rent payment means no mortgage payment.“I do see both sides. “I feel for the tenants who have lost their jobs,” Orlando said. “It’s also unfortunate for the landlord because they need to pay their mortgage. Most landlords do have a mortgage on their properties.”The Eviction Lab is now examining what states are doing to help. They rate states using a scorecard system.“Essentially a state by state look at what policies states are taking to combat evictions during the pandemic,” Edmonds said.Moving forward, the potential for evictions is unknown and varies state to state.“In 2016, we saw somewhere around 3.7 million filings, eviction filings,” Edmonds said. “I think it’s not so much a stretch to believe we’re gonna see something comparably, if not more severely, devastating for renter households.” 3361
