TUCSON, Ariz. - An Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper intentionally collided with a wrong-way vehicle on Oct. 14.According to DPS, a trooper was assisting a stranded driver on the I-10 near Avra Valley. The trooper heard reports of a wrong-way vehicle traveling east within the westbound traffic lanes on I-10.The trooper found the wrong-way vehicle, approaching the car head-on near Cortaro Road. The trooper intentionally aligned the front left corner of his patrol vehicle with the front left corner of the wrong-way vehicle - forcing a collision that immediately stopped the wrong-way driver.DPS said the wrong-way driver was a disoriented, elderly woman. She was not properly restrained during the collision and sustained non-life threatening injuries. She was taken to Banner University Medical Center.The trooper was treated for minor injuries.“The ability of our trooper to assess the situation and take decisive action to stop the wrong-way vehicle, protected the lives of many motorists while endangering his own," said DPS Director, Colonel Frank Milstead. "I am proud of our brave trooper and pray he makes a full recovery and never has to face another wrong-way in his life.”  1216

Twenty years after he was killed for being gay, Matthew Shepard was laid to rest today.Shepard was given a special honor of being laid to rest at the Washington National Cathedral. Shepard’s father said today was a sense of relief.“It's so important,” says Dennis Shepard. “We now have a home for Matt others can visit; safe from haters.”Shepard died after being beaten and tied to a fence in Wyoming by two men who targeted him for being gay. Shepard became a symbol of the gay rights movement after his death, and now, his ashes will be interred at the Washington National Cathedral.“The Shepard's waited so long to bury Matthew’s ashes because they were fearful that some anti-gay individual or group would find his grave and desecrate it somehow,” says Rev. Gene Robinson, who helped lead Friday’s service.Robinson was the first openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church, and he carried Shepard's ashes into the cathedral.“And because he's become such a symbol for us, it feels like an indescribable honor to bring him into church,” says Robinson.The National Cathedral gave Shepard the unique honor of being laid to rest there. US counterintelligence officials are scrutinizing one of Ivanka Trump's international business deals, according to two sources familiar with the matter.The FBI has been looking into the negotiations and financing surrounding Trump International Hotel and Tower in Vancouver, according to a US official and a former US official. The scrutiny could be a hurdle for the first daughter as she tries to obtain a full security clearance in her role as adviser to President Donald Trump.It's standard procedure to probe foreign contacts and international business deals as part of a background check investigation. But the complexity of the Trump Organization's business deals, which often rely on international financing and buyers, presents a challenge.The FBI has been looking closely at the international business entanglements of both Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, to determine whether any of those deals could leave them vulnerable to pressure from foreign agents, including China, according to a US official.The development -- a 616-foot beacon dotting the Vancouver skyline and featuring a trademarked Ivanka Trump spa -- opened in February 2017, just after Trump took office.The Trump Organization does not own the building. Instead, like other Trump projects, it receives licensing and marketing fees from the developer, Joo Kim Tiah. A scion of one of Malaysia's wealthiest families, Tiah runs his family's Canada-based development company Holborn Group. TULSA, Okla. - Archaeologists said during a press conference on Tuesday that they have encountered human remains on day two of the second test excavation as they search for victims of the 1921 Tulsa race massacre. Archaeologists said they do not know if the remains are from 1921 or not. I am very grateful to have the foremost experts in the country working to locate the remains of victims from the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. Today, our research team found an unmarked grave in an area previously identified through geophysical survey work. The next step will be to identify if the remains are associated with the Tulsa Race Massacre. This will be done through forensic analysis of the remains, and by comparing them with funeral home and death certificate records. We will continue to take this investigation one step at a time, wherever it may lead.Researchers said the investigation is expected to last one week but could extend into a second week, depending on the findings.The archaeologists are focusing on two areas in Oaklawn Cemetery this time around.The first site is adjacent to two 1921 race massacre headstones in the historically Black section of Potters Field; the second is a new dig site located on the Southwest section of the cemetery.In 2018, Mayor Bynum announced the City of Tulsa would re-examine potential graves from the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. That investigation began in 2020 with crews conducting their search along the western edge of the cemetery. Archaeologists conducted extensive test excavations and concluded with no evidence of human remains.However, the search could continue beyond Oaklawn Cemetery. Researchers said several areas are still candidates for possible mass grave sites related to the 1921 Tulsa race massacre. Two studies recently published in the CDC’s journal indicate COVID-19 can spread on airplanes.In one study, researchers found a woman showing symptoms on a 10-hour flight potentially spread COVID-19 to at least 15 other people on the plane.A 27-year-old businesswoman who lived in London and was from Vietnam started having symptoms, fever and cough, while still in London in late February. She and her sister had visited Italy and other locations in London before the woman flew to Vietnam. Her sister later tested positive for COVID-19.The 27-year-old was one of 21 people sitting in business class on the March 1 flight from London to Hanoi, Vietnam. The woman became more sick once she landed, and isolated in her home. A few days later, she tested positive for COVID-19, as did three people in her house and a friend back in London she had visited before the flight.Researchers quickly tracked down the majority of people who were on the woman’s flight to isolate and trace potential cases.In all, researchers identified 14 additional passengers and one crew member who had COVID-19. The study states 12 of the passengers who tested positive had sat in business class with the 27-year-old woman, and 11 of them were sitting within two seats of her.“First, thermal imaging and self-declaration of symptoms have clear limitations, as demonstrated by case 1 (the woman), who boarded the flight with symptoms and did not declare them before or after the flight. Second, long flights not only can lead to importation of COVID-19 cases but also can provide conditions for superspreader events,” researchers concluded.The second study looked at four people aboard a flight from Boston to Hong Kong on March 9 who all tested positive for COVID-19 after landing in Hong Kong and showing symptoms. Two passengers, a couple, flew in business class. They showed symptoms the day they landed and sought healthcare.The other two cases were flight attendants who served the business class and first class sections of the plane. Both had come into close contact with the couple, and they both developed symptoms a few days after landing.Researchers were able to sequence their viruses and discovered all four had the same strain of COVID-19.Scientists conclude the couple contracted COVID-19 while they were in the U.S. and transmitted it to the flight attendants on the plane.“Passengers and cabin crew do not generally go through the same check-in process at airports before boarding. Although we cannot completely rule out the possibility that (the flight attendants) were infected before boarding, the unique virus sequence and 100% identity across the whole virus genome from the 4 patients makes this scenario highly unlikely,” researchers stated.Although there were no other positive COVID-19 cases reported from this flight, not all passengers were tested or tracked like in the first study.“Our results demonstrate that SARS-CoV-2 can be transmitted on airplanes. To prevent transmission of the virus during travel, infection control measures must continue,” they noted.Both of these studies looked at cases on flights before face coverings were mandatory on flights. They were published in Emerging Infectious Diseases, a journal of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. 3286
