CHICAGO, Ill. – Ten years ago, Aja McClanahan didn’t think she’d be living on Chicago’s South Side. It also seemed like her family would be forever be in debt.“It was a mountain that I did not think we could ever tackle,” said McClanahan. Her family didn’t owe just a little bit of money. “It was over 0,000,” said McClanahan. McClanahan says everything started with student loans. That was the bulk of her and her family’s debt.“Between my husband and I, we had tons of student loan debt, ,000 between the two of us,” said McClanahan. “Then another ,000 was a mixture of consumer debt, car notes, credit cards, medical bills and things like that.” But the family decided debt was not going to define them forever.“I remember when I had my first child, my daughter, I knew I wanted to stay home with her but when I ran the numbers…we were like between bills rent, debt repayment, student loans, we cannot make this work,” said McClanahan. She says her family wasn’t budgeting before they put a plan together to pay down debt. "We just spent money as it came in and whatever we spent it on,” said McClanahan. “But with a spending plan we could prioritize what is important to us. So, it helped us look at how we were spending our money. And we kind of cut the fat.”They made sacrifices including a move from the suburbs of Chicago to the inner-city South Side neighborhood of Englewood. They inherited a house from a family member. “The first night we were there, we were like this is the stupidest thing we have ever done,” McClanahan said. "It was so noisy. Just the urban soundscape if you’re not used to it. So, it’s like sirens, barking dogs, people yelling and shouting in the alleys. We were like what have we done?”But they settled in and made it their home without paying a mortgage or rent. After about eight years of strict spending, side hustle and chipping away, they finally paid it all off. "The final balance was ,700 or something like that for a student loan or something like that and I remember making the payment or something like that and remember calling my husband and saying we’re debt free,” said McClanahan. McClanahan now works as a speaker and author trying to help other people conquer debt. "I find that a lot of people become hopeless around the holidays when you’re expected to have money to go out to parties to exchange gifts. For some people, they feel powerless and out of control because they don’t have money,” said McClanahan. While money isn’t everything, McClanahan says it can impact's more than just a bottom line.“I feel like money touches every part of our lives and if you can fix that money thing, you can get back more control,” said McClanahan. 2712

CINCINNATI — A Hamilton, Ohio doctor will likely spend the rest of his life in prison after a jury convicted him of 37 charges related to illegally prescribing pain pills to patients. Dr. Saad Sakkal waved a sad goodbye to his family in the courtroom after jurors announced its verdicts on Thursday afternoon. The 71-year-old will spend the next 20 years in prison and could face a life sentence for causing the overdose death of Middletown resident Ashley Adkins.“If doctors are out there acting as drug dealers, pill pushers, that’s a federal crime,” said U.S. Attorney Ben Glassman. “We’re going to investigate those doctors. They’re going to be tried, and, like Sakkal, they’re going to be finding themselves in prison for a long time.”Adkins’ boyfriend found her dead on the couch of their Middletown home on the morning of Jan. 20, 2018, two days after Sakkal prescribed her Oxycodone, an opiate pain medicine, and alprazolam, an anti-anxiety drug sold under the brand name Xanax, according to court records and autopsy reports. 1050

Douglas County in Colorado is ranked the healthiest county in the country. The news doesn’t surprise Colorado natives Amber Jaworsky and Kristin Gibowicz, who are both yoga instructors. They say physical activity is contagious in Douglas County. “If you're sitting at your kitchen table looking out the window and there’s 15 people riding their bikes by and everybody is walking their dogs, you're [kind of] like, ‘Dang, I got to get my butt moving!’” says Jaworsky. The pair says say their mental health is just as important as their physical health. “Just getting out, breathing fresh air and slowing your mind down a little bit, putting your phone down disconnecting,” Gibowicz says of maintaining her mental health. Gibowicz says mental health has everything to do with physical health, and she’s right. Diabetes and smoking have the strongest correlation in reducing life expectancy. However, mental health was nearly as strong. Researchers say mental health did not have as strong of an effect last year. But it's in line with information from the Centers from Disease Control (CDC) that showed rising opioid overdoses and suicides shorten life expectancy. “There's some national research that looks at a concept they called deaths of despair,” explains Nancy VanDeMark, with Mental Health Colorado. VanDeMark says those are things many people struggle with like depression, suicide, alcohol and drug use. That's why she says we should treat mental like we do our physical and get checkups and screenings.“We have a screening site on our website so people can go in and complete a number of screenings to see if they're high risk for some sort of mental health or substance use concern,” VanDeMark says.More information can be found 1753

It was pulled in by the fishermen about 70 miles southeast of Charleston.Once they realized what they were dealing with, they contacted the Coast Guard.Police are working with federal authorities to determine the source of the drugs.Authorities also praised the fishermen for turning it in. 548
