A nationwide pediatric group is urging local leaders, parents and education systems to collaborate and create policies that allow for as much in-person learning this fall as possible.The American Academy of Pediatrics released guidance on their website based on in-person attendance at schools being not only fundamental to children’s mental, social and physical development, but also playing “a critical role in addressing racial and social inequality … it is critical to reflect on the differential impact SARS-CoV-2 and the associated school closures have had on different races, ethnic and vulnerable populations.”The recommendations include masks, physical distancing, and outdoor play, with more specifics. Such as, the AAP recommends placing desks 3-to-6 feet apart as long as it allows children to attend school; the 3-foot distance can be used when face coverings are also being worn.Middle and high schools should avoid groupings of students inside doing activities involving exhalation, i.e. singing, exercising, etc. according to the recommendations. The AAP also encourages limiting locker use and moving from room-to-room for classes.The guidance extends to school faculty and staff, with the AAP urging districts to make sure adults in schools get the support they need to set a good example and stay healthy.“In the same way that students are going to need support to effectively return to school and to be prepared to be ready to process the information they are being taught, teachers cannot be expected to be successful at teaching children without having their mental health needs supported.The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last updated their guidance to schools and care facilities in April and it is focused on quickly stopping an outbreak, cleaning facilities and maintaining continuity in education and meal accessibility.AAP acknowledges any school policy this fall should be flexible and nimble, able to respond to new information about the coronavirus and specific needs in each school, district and region.“Although schools should be prepared to be agile to meet evolving needs and respond to increasing knowledge related to the pandemic and may need to institute partial or complete closures when the public health need requires, they should recognize that staff, students, and families will benefit from sufficient time to understand and adjust to changes in routine and practices.” 2591

Maybe they might be at a higher risk due to a compromised immune system or someone else within their family so they have some concerns about returning. Some employees don’t want to return-- and some employees want to continue to work from home when they were able to do it during this period of COVID," says Amber Clayton, the Knowledge Center Director at the Society for Human Resource Management.Clayton says some reasons for an employee refusing to come back to the office are protected under law. For example, if the employee, or someone the employee lives with, has underlying health conditions that would make them at higher risk for being affected by COVID-19, or they're unable to return due to childcare reasons. Employment lawyers like Ruthie Goodboe agree, citing OSHA and the National Labor Relations Act."An analysis needs to be done by the employer to determine, ‘Am I able to separate that employee if they’re unwilling to return to work, am I required to do or take certain steps’ and then if I do that and they still don’t come to work, do I have a right to separate them," said Goodboe, an employment lawyer with Ogletree, Deakins, Nash Smoak & Stewart.Employers must also make sure they're following regulations under the Americans with Disabilities Act and Family Medical Leave Act."If employers are following guidance from the CDC and from OSHA and limiting their exposure in the workplace, that should be satisfactory. However, there may be times that someone may be infected in the workplace and that employer may be held liable depending on the situation," Clayton said.But for those employees who simply have a general fear of COVID and despite any accommodations the business is taking, still don't feel comfortable coming back to work, it may be a breaking point."There's no federal or state laws that I’m aware of that requires an employer to provide leave based on someone’s fear that they may contract some type of disease whether it’s COVID-19 or something else. But employers should, through their policies and practices, determine what they’ve done in the past and ensure they’re being consistent and fair in their policies," says Clayton.Perhaps the biggest key for employers and employees in getting through this is communication."Stay calm, take a breath and make sure you’re communicating well with your employees to get all of the information. Do you understand what all of their concerns are? Because once their concerns are understood, it may be easy to resolve," says Goodboe.Employees and employers could ultimately find a mutually agreeable working situation to keep everyone comfortable and healthy at work. 2994
LUTZ, Fla. — Sheriff's deputies say a man who broke into a WWE star's home on Sunday had hoped to take her hostage and said claim he had been planning the crime for eight months.The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said on early Sunday morning, the suspect, 24-year-old Phillip Thomas, entered a home at Promenade at Lake Park in Lutz.Detectives learned Thomas parked his car at Idle Wild Church earlier that night, walked to the house, cut a hole in the patio screen and remained there for about three to four hours. He was watching and listening through the windows, officials said.After the homeowner went to bed, Thomas came in through the back sliding door, which activated the home alarm. It prompted the homeowner to look out the window and spot Thomas.The homeowner and a guest left the house in a car and called 911.When deputies arrived, Thomas was still inside the house.According to public records, the house is owned by WWE wrestler Sonya Deville.Deputies discovered Thomas was carrying a knife, plastic zip ties, duct tape, mace and other items.Through the investigation, detectives discovered Thomas lived in South Carolina and came to Lutz specifically targeting the Deville."We know the suspect was completely obsessed with the victim, and they had been trying to engage in a conversation for several years, but were unsuccessful. And then, Sunday night is when they tried to confront the victim," said Natalia Verdina, a public information officer with HCSO.Thomas told deputies he was planning to take the homeowner hostage."Our deputies are unveiling the suspect's disturbing obsession with this homeowner who he had never met, but stalked on social media for years," Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said. "It's frightening to think of all the ways this incident could have played out had the home alarm not gone off and alerted the homeowner of an intruder. LOUISVILLE, Ky. – One of the three Louisville police officers involved in the shooting death of Breonna Taylor is being fired.The city’s mayor, Greg Fischer, announced Friday that the police department is initiating termination procedures against officer Brett Hankison, 44.“Unfortunately, due to a provision in state law that I very much would like to see changed, both the Chief and I are precluded from talking about what brought us to this moment, or even the timing of this decision,” the mayor said in a statement.According to a termination letter obtained by WLKY, Hankison was informed of his firing Friday morning.The other two officers involved in the fatal shooting, 47-year-old Jon Mattingly and 42-year-old Myles Cosgrove, remain with the department, but have been placed on administrative reassignment, the Courier Journal reports.As part of a narcotics investigation, the officers used a battering ram to knock down Breonna Taylor’s door as they served a no-knock warrant in the early morning hours of March 13.During the incident, Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, has said that he thought the officers were intruders and fired a warning shot. The officers returned fire, shooting Taylor eight times, and she died in the hall of her apartment. No drugs were found.Thursday, Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron held a press conference, where he asked for patience from the public as his office investigates the shooting.Taylor's death is one of a handful of African Americans who have died at the hands of police officers or former police officers in 2020.
