SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two San Diego County breweries were among the fastest growing craft breweries in the country in 2017, according to the Brewers Association.Novo Brazil Brewing Co. in Chula Vista and Bay City Brewing Co. in San Diego both made the list. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Whale watchers have been delighting over an invasion of humpback whales off San Diego’s coast.Domenic Biagini is a photographer for San Diego Whale Watch. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two University of San Diego graduates may eventually find themselves among the stars.USD Alumni Matthew Dominick and Jonny Kim will graduate as part of NASA's first class of astronaut candidates under the Artemis program Friday at the program's Johnson Space Center in Houston.Dominick, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from USD's school of engineering, is a U.S. Navy lieutenant commander born in Colorado. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two San Diego police officers answered an unusual call to duty when an emergency struck, leaving two young children alone.SDPD officers Daniel Clark and Adrianni Vital have been a part of the department for about a year.Last Friday night, police received a call about a father in San Ysidro having a medical emergency, but he did not have any family or others to watch his two young daughters.After he was taken to the hospital, Clark and Vital stayed behind to watch the man’s 2-year-old and 4-year-old daughters.“Just to put a smile on their face, it meant a lot, it was a great interaction; it just made my day,” said Vital. “We just want to show people that we are human, too, and we do want to give back, and sometimes it comes in different shapes and sizes in how we do it."The officers did everything they could to keep the girls entertained so they would not worry about their dad.Using his own experience as a father, Clark learned more about the children’s likes and dislikes, and the officers eventually found out the girls loved the song “Baby Shark.”ABC 10News learned the girls’ father is doing OK and the family was reunited after about two hours. 1190

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two San Diego brothers are renewing their push for a Holocaust memorial along the Embarcadero, but the Port of San Diego does not appear to be on board.Mark and Frank Powell, who are Jewish, want to install the memorial at Tuna Harbor, just steps from the U.S.S. Midway Museum and the popular Unconditional Surrender kissing statue. The monument depicts U.S. Soldiers liberating Nazi concentration camps at the end of World War II, with general Dwight D. Eisenhower looking on. The Powells are bringing the idea back to the Port in light of the recent Poway Chabad shooting and overall increase in anti-Semitic incidents. In 2017, the Powells had the finances lined up, and support from more than a dozen politicians. They had letters from Democratic Congressman Scott Peters, Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter and San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer. But the Port's Public Art committee rejected the proposal in an 8-0 vote. In a statement Friday, Port Chairman Gary Bonelli said there were a number of issues with the proposal."No one on the Committee questioned the importance of the proposed WWII Military Liberation Monument, but Committee members felt that this particular proposal neither inspired nor caused one to contemplate the subject matter," Bonelli said. "We have to teach our kids that life is hard and life is a struggle."The port added that it's not currently accepting new art proposals for the Embarcadero because of redevelopment. A spokeswoman for the agency says the Powells can re-submit their monument proposal if there are significant changes after their prior feedback. They have until January 2020 to do so. 2298
