BEIJING, July 27 (Xinhua) -- The Supreme People's Court (SPC) of China on Tuesday urged courts across the country to accept scrutiny by the press and general public.The courts must constantly listen to the public so they can carry out their work in a better way, Shen Deyong, executive vice president of the SPC, told a national conference on the publicity work of courts.After hailing achievements of the courts in providing information to the public, Shen said some courts did not pay enough attention to public opinion."The public are paying more attention to court work, their expectations are growing. They want to know more, participate more and supervise more," he said.Shen urged courts to disclose information on major issues in a timely fashion, so as to avoid public suspicion and damage to judicial authority.The Supreme People's Court will train spokespeople and publicity officials of courts nationwide in the second half of the year.

BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) - Temperatures as high as 41 degrees Celsius continued to grill south China this week, but local Chinese are popping up with cool ways to cope with the heat.Every morning this summer, thousands of residents in the eastern Chinese city of Hanzhou rush to air-raid shelters, not to escape air attacks, but summer heat.In the capital of Zhejiang Province, many city dwellers have found their summer resorts in the city' s nine bomb shelters, which were dug beneath hummocks in the 1960s to defend against "American imperialist invaders" .In one shelter in southern Hanzhou, elders are watching swordsman TV opera or playing mahjong, while children play hide-and-seek in the labyrinth-like place.Temperatures inside the shelter were 22 degrees Celsius, compared to 38 degrees Celsius outdoors, according to a LED screen above one entrance."We old folks don' t like to be cooped up in air-conditioned rooms," said Ye Chulin, a local retiree. BEIJING, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang has called on the country's centrally-administered state-owned enterprises to improve workplace safety and avoid accidents among workers.Zhang made the comments during an inspection tour in Beijing on Wednesday and Thursday to six major state companies, including China Petrochemical Corp., Shenhua Group Corp. Ltd., and China State Construction Engineering Corp.Further, Zhang urged these businesses to attach great importance to monitoring workplace safety and improving safety management systems.He asked enterprises to increase input in production safety management, promote research and development, as well as the application of new technologies and equipment that would help improve the safety of workers.Zhang also demanded efforts be made to improve staff trainings on creating safe work conditions.

XINING, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu said Sunday the government would soon implement the reconstruction plan for quake-hit Yushu in northwest China's Qinghai Province.Hui made the remarks at a meeting of the State Council's earthquake relief and disaster control headquarters held Sunday in Xining, capital of Qinghai, according a statement released after the meeting."We must strive to accomplish major reconstruction tasks in three years in a coordinated and scientific way and in accordance with the law," Hui said.Yushu was hit by a 7.1-magnitude quake April 14, with more than 2,200 people being killed and thousands of homes being flattened.The State Council approved the reconstruction plan for Yushu prefecture on June 14.Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu (C) speaks at the reconstruction meeting for the quake-hit Yushu of northwest China's Qinghai Province, in Xining, northwest China's Qinghai Province, June 20, 2010.
