SAN DIEGO (AP and KGTV) -- Washing Senators are remembering John McCain's momentous vote against a Republican effort to repeal the Obama-era health law. Of those remembering McCain is Sen Susan Collins, who told CNN's "State of the Union" that she and GOP colleague Lisa Murkowski of Alaska — both repeal opponents — spoke to McCain before the July 2017 vote because they knew he was struggling with the decision.Collins says he pointed to them and simply said, "You two are right!"Vice President Mike Pence was waiting to speak with McCain next, Collins says, but she knew McCain's "no" decision would stick. Collins said, "Once John McCain made up his mind about something, there was no shaking him."McCain would later famously hold up his hand and vote no, ending the measure. Following the vote, audible gasps could be heard throughout the room, as well as applause. The 81-year-old Arizona Republican died Saturday of brain cancer.Watch the moment McCain voted no in the player below:  1023

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former San Diego firefighter pleaded guilty Tuesday to a felony count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor.Justin Curtis Price, 36, formerly a fire engineer-paramedic who had been with the city public-safety agency for 10 years, was arrested last April for the Nov. 1, 2018, sexual encounter with a 17-year-old girl.Prosecutors said Price had known the teen since she was about 9 or 10 years old.RELATED:San Diego firefighter to stand trial for alleged rape of underage girlSan Diego Fire engineer charged with sexually assaulting teenPrice is slated to be sentenced April 24 to five years felony probation and could also face up to one year in jail, according to Deputy District Attorney Jessica Coto. The sentencing judge will decide how much jail time Price could serve and whether he will have to register as a sex offender.Preliminary hearing testimony from last fall indicated Price admitted to having sex with the teen about two weeks after her 17th birthday in text messages with the girl's mother.San Diego police Detective Jeremy Margolis testified that he interviewed the victim, who said Price told her not to tell anyone about what happened, and that it would be "our little secret." 1231

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The number of people expressing fear of returning to their home countries when stopped at the U.S. border with Mexico has spiked, according to figures released Monday by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.U.S. border authorities fielded 92,959 "credible fear" claims — the initial step toward asylum — in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, up 67 percent from 55,584 the previous year. The "credible fear" claims accounted for 18 percent of all people arrested or stopped at the Mexican border in the latest period, up from 13 percent a year earlier.CBP publicly released the numbers for the first time as more migrants, many of them families and children from Mexico and Central America, seek asylum or other forms of humanitarian protection to gain entry to the U.S. The trend was highlighted by a caravan of more than 6,000 migrants, largely from Honduras, that arrived in Tijuana, Mexico, last month, many hoping to seek asylum across the border in San Diego.Commissioner Kevin McAleenan noted that most asylum claims are ultimately unsuccessful in immigration court and he renewed the Trump administration's call for Congress to address "these vulnerabilities in our immigration system." Judges granted asylum in 21 percent of their cases in the 2018 fiscal year."These numbers reflect a dramatic increase in initial fear claims by those encountered on the border, which is straining border security, immigration enforcement and courts, and other federal resources," McAleenan said.CBP didn't say how many people it stopped passed the initial screening, or "credible fear" interview, but historically about three in four clear the hurdle. They are detained or released, often with ankle monitors, while their cases wind through clogged immigration courts.U.S. border authorities are increasingly telling asylum seekers to wait in Mexico, saying they are they are unable to process claims for everyone at once. The wait in Tijuana was about six weeks even before the latest caravan arrived.Initial fear claims at official crossings — the prescribed way to claim asylum — more than doubled in the last fiscal year to 38,269, according to CBP. Claims by people who crossed illegally between ports of entry rose 43 percent to 54,690.President Donald Trump last month ordered that asylum be denied to anyone who enters the country illegally from Mexico, but a federal judge in San Francisco blocked him. An appeals court upheld the judge's decision on Friday. 2485

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 17-year-old boy who was allegedly behind the wheel during a solo-vehicle crash in Mission Valley that killed two teenage passengers and injured two others pleaded not guilty to multiple charges Thursday during an arraignment conducted at a Hillcrest hospital room. The unidentified teen was allegedly driving a 2008 BMW that veered off a freeway off-ramp and caught fire around 3:15 a.m. Saturday, killing two 15-year-old boys, according to the California Highway Patrol. Relatives and officials identified the two deceased teens as Gustavo Beltran and David Chavez. The crash occurred on the off-ramp from southbound state Route 163 to westbound Interstate 8, according to the CHP.RELATED:Second teen killed in Mission Valley crash identifiedCommunity helping family of teen killed in Mission Valley crashAt least 2 dead in fiery freeway crash in Mission ValleyDue to the driver's age, prosecutors declined to comment on what charges he's facing, his current medical condition or the conditions of the two surviving passengers. Deputy District Attorney Hung Bach told reporters outside UC San Diego Medical Center the boy will be transferred to juvenile hall upon his release from the hospital. He is due in court Feb. 26 for a readiness conference.Though prosecutors declined to discuss specifics on the circumstances behind the crash, Officer Salvador Castro of the California Highway Patrol said the driver was arrested Saturday at a hospital on suspicion of vehicular homicide and driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. All five boys range in age from 15 to 19 and were friends, Castro said. The driver and two other teens were able to escape the burning vehicle, but two boys were trapped in the back seat, Castro said. Their bodies were found after firefighters put out the flames. 1823

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — A jury is deliberating in the trial of a Southern California man charged with killing a family of four and burying their bodies in the desert.Jurors on Thursday got the case brought by San Bernardino County prosecutors against 62-year-old Charles "Chase" Merritt.Merritt's business associate Joseph McStay, McStay's wife Summer and the couple's 3- and 4-year-old sons vanished from their San Diego County home in 2010. Three years later, their bodies were found in shallow desert graves more than 100 miles away.Merritt was arrested in 2014. Authorities said they traced his cellphone to the gravesite area and to a call seeking to close McStay's online bookkeeping account. The trial began in January. If Merritt is convicted of the murders, prosecutors will seek the death penalty. 820
