SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The views from atop of the old light house at Point Loma are off limits to virtually everyone most of the year except two particular twin sisters.Kim Falhlen and Karen Scanlon are volunteers at Cabrillo National Monument.The 67-year-old sisters are tasked with cleaning the rare glass lenses at the top of the lighthouse among other duties for the open tower days held only 3 days a year.“It’s almost in a constant need of repair,” said Kim Fahlen, “the tower wasn’t built for today’s activity.”The sisters grew up in Ohio and say they plan on helping at the tower as long as the park rangers at Cabrillo will let them.“We’re good for a while,” said Karen Scanlon, “we’ll keep doing this until they make us take a desk job.” 756

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The wife of Cal Fire San Diego fire engineer Cory Iverson spoke to 10News about her life following her husband's death while he battled the Thomas Fire last year.Cory Iverson died December 14th battling the Thomas Fire in Ventura County.  The 32-year-old fire apparatus engineer died after he getting caught in a swarm of spot fires in the Fillmore area.He leaves behind his wife Ashley, their 3 year old daughter Evie, and baby Taylor, due in May.Ashley Iverson described her life following her husband's death as the "most horrible and wonderful and terrible and amazing" experience she's ever endured."It's ceaseless," Iverson said of the outpouring of support following her husband's death. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The statistics for foster kids aging out of the system are grim. According to the National Foster Youth Institute, after reaching the age of 18, 20 percent of the children who were in foster care will become instantly homeless. And there's a less than a 3 percent chance for children who have aged out of foster care to earn a college degree at any point in their life.San Diego nonprofit Just in Time for Foster Youth (JIT) is doing its part to prevent young people here from becoming a statistic. "When you turn 18 a lot of times the foster parents say here is a few dollars and you're on your own, there's no one to help you out," said Ivan Chavez, who was in the foster system from age 7 to 17.Growing up, he didn't have many positive role models. "For me, I never went to high school, and I barely went to middle school."But his journey brought him to JIT, where he now works as a full-time employee. JIT's My First Home (MFH) program helps former foster youth furnish and move into their new living space, creating a foundation for stable housing.Once every month, youth participants involved in the program have the chance to shop at the MFH Distribution Center, providing participants housing essentials for free, such as furniture, electronics, linens, and appliances. "They come in through the front door they're like you have all this stuff, and it's for me? They feel special, you know?" said Chavez.Chavez went from once living on the streets to now pursuing a master's degree. "If I saw my 15-year-old self, I would say everything is going to be ok. You're going to grow up, and you're going to do good and hopefully change people's lives," said Chavez. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The topic of voter fraud has been in the spotlight more than usual this election cycle, with President Donald Trump encouraging supporters to volunteer as poll watchers and tweeting about election-related fraud at least eight times in the last week.There are several categories of voter fraud, including ineligible voting by non-citizens or felons; or double voting, when someone illegally casts more than one ballot.Voter fraud is cheating by voters themselves, which is distinct from other forms of election malfeasance, and there have been dozens of studies aimed at measuring it over the last few years.There are essentially two types of academic research on voter fraud: studies that examine documented cases of voter fraud, such as ones mentioned in news articles or criminal prosecutions; and studies that try to predict how much fraud might be going undetected, using advanced statistics and artificial intelligence techniques.Pam Smith, the former president of the non-partisan Verified Voting Foundation, summarizes the research on documented voter fraud this way: “There's an infinitesimal amount of voter fraud where a voter is intentionally doing something fraudulent.”A 2007 study by the Brennan Center at New York University calculated the rate of voter fraud in three elections in the early 2000s at between 0.0003% to 0.0025%.The odds of being struck by lightning in a given year is 0.0002%.The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, keeps a database of known cases of voter fraud. It now has 1,298 examples.The examples date back to 1982 and cover both presidential and off-year contests. There were more than 1 billion votes cast in presidential contests alone during that span.But those are the known cases. What about undetected cases of voter fraud?This is an area of study called election forensics, where researchers use advanced statistics and machine learning to estimate irregularities.One study by researchers at Harvard and Stanford universities looked at voter registration data in the 2012 election and used algorithms to estimate that the maximum amount of double voting was .02%, or 1 out of every 4,000 ballots.But the researchers also showed that most, if not all, of these possible double votes, could have actually been innocent clerical errors. The researchers audited poll books in Philadelphia and found a 1% error rate; an error rate of 1.3% would be enough to explain all of the irregularities.There are other kinds of fraud, called election fraud, like the illegal ballot harvesting in North Carolina’s 9th District in 2018. But Smith, of Verified Voting, said those cases are actually easier to catch because they typically involve multiple people.In the very rare cases when they do happen, judges can order an election re-do.“Fraud on any kind of massive scale, as we've heard talked about, that doesn't happen,” Smith said. “And there are safeguards and guardrails in place to prevent it.”Smith said California’s guardrails include pre-election testing of voting machines and other equipment and audits after the election.California voters can also sign up for a free tool called “Where’s My Ballot?” The service will send automated alerts the moment your ballot is received and counted. 3270

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Rock Church is making holiday giving even easier, teaming up with Express Feedback for Good to raise money for their Toys for Joy campaign.Under the new program, people can sign up to take on-line surveys. For each one they take, the Church will get towards their holiday fundraiser."This is a life or death situation for some kids and some families," says Pastor Miles McPherson.The Toys for Joy program is now in its 23rd year. Each year the Church helps around 20,000 families with food, clothing, toys, and more for the holidays. McPherson says he hopes the new survey tool will inspire people to do more."The express feedback tool gives people the opportunity to do something to help somebody, but we want them to take the next step, touch a person, smile at a person, hear someone's story," he says.The surveys only take about one minute each, and there's a limit of 100 per person. The Church says they hope to raise 0,000 from the surveys, to help supplement the other donations they get each year.The company, Express Feedback for Good, takes the information from the survey and sells it to businesses to help them serve their customers better."It's a win/win for both parties," says Product Manager Dena Coykendall. "The non-profit can create resources, and business can collect information from a crowd that's more representative."This year, the Rock Church will have four locations for their Toys for Joy campaign on December 14th.
