SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Sixteen people are dead and hundreds are still hospitalized as the City of San Diego continues to battle a Hepatitis A. The majority of them are homeless.Tents belonging to the homeless were back up in downtown just two days after the city sprayed down streets and sidewalks to control the outbreak. David Ross is known as "the waterman" in downtown. He is an advocate for the homeless and regularly passes out water to those living on the street. He thinks the city could have prevented the homeless outbreak by installing portable bathrooms. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --The FDA has placed new restrictions on a controversial birth control device called Essure. The maker of the implant, Bayer, will only be allowed to sell to providers who agree to fully inform women about the risks and side effects. A San Diego woman who had the Essure implant is now suing the physician who performed the procedure. She says she wasn't given enough information and wants to warn others about her experience. Three months after Essure was implanted she began experiencing severe pain. She eventually had a full hysterectomy. 603
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A federal judge in San Francisco is mulling the competency to stand trial of a Mexican man who shot and killed 32-year-old Kate Steinle. The 2015 shooting figured prominently in President Donald Trump’s run for the White House four years ago. The case against Jose Ines Garcia Zarate on federal gun charges has been pending since a judge raised “serious concerns” about Garcia Zarate's mental capacities back in January. Two doctors have diagnosed Garcia Zarate with schizophrenia and found him unfit to stand trial. The San Francisco Examiner reports that Garcia Zarate told the court Friday through a Spanish interpreter that he wanted to be sentenced to prison or deported back to Mexico. 720
SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- As we get into the heart of fire season, there are big concerns for neighbors who live along a former golf course. The old Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club is full of dried brush. Neighbors say they are worried the owner is letting the property become a fire hazard. Chain linked fences block off the entrances to the now-shuttered golf course. "It's looking pretty rough," says neighbor Jeffery Acogido. He's been living in his Carmel Mountain Ranch home for almost 30 years. "The course was actually here before the residences."The brush from the site comes right up to neighbors backyards. As we continue to see, warmer weather neighbors say the unwanted vegetation is becoming a fire hazard. "The community is really concerned that it's just going to be a matter of time that something unfortunate might happen."There have been talks of developing the land. 10News made calls to speak with the owner about the neighbor's concerns but haven't heard back. A Development company tells 10News it is working on a plan for new homes on the property. 1076
SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Hundreds of volunteers, from all over the state, are in San Diego for Governor Gavin Newsom’s emergency preparedness campaign. It’s called “California For All.” The campaign is designed to help emergency responders during wildfires and other disasters. California For All campaign is bringing together 600 volunteers. The Community Emergency Response Teams, also known as CERT, is on a mission to help prepare people in the community in case of a natural disaster.CERT members are also trained to assist first responders. “It’s an opportunity for community members to learn basic skills to prepare their community to respond, in case of a major disaster or any event, where the actual true responders can’t get there on time” Dore Bietz. Governor Gavin Newsom and legislators came together to make a million commitment to the campaign. A video message from the governor was played during today’s session. CERT members also help engage diverse and socially vulnerable communities during times of need. “It is very difficult for first responders to come in when there is a language barrier,” says Bietz. CERT is a FEMA- recognized program. Members suggest every household should have a plan in case there is an evacuation in their area. 1265
