BEIJING, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- China and Switzerland Saturday marked the 60th anniversary of their diplomatic ties at a reception in Beijing.Addressing the occasion, senior Chinese official Liu Qi said China hopes to take the opportunity of the 60th anniversary to enhance mutual political trust and cooperation with Switzerland in various fields.Liu, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said China attaches great importance to developing friendly relations with Switzerland, one of the first Western countries to recognize the People's Republic of China.Currently China is Switzerland's second largest trading partner in Asia, and Switzerland is a major partner of China in Europe, said Liu.Doris Leuthard, President of the Swiss Confederation and Head of Federal Department of Economic Affairs, said Swiss-China relationship has deeply developed since the establishment of the diplomatic ties on Sept. 14, 1950.Leuthard said the two economies are complementary and can achieve win-win results in fields such as environment, machinery and financial services.Leuthard is paying a working visit to China from Aug. 10 to 15, at the invitation of Chinese President Hu Jintao.

CHONGQING, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Rain-triggered landslides in southwest China Monday blocked a river, creating a barrier lake in Chongqing Municipality and forcing the evacuation of more than 12,000 people, flood control authorities said.The landslide blocked the Luojiang River in Chengkou County early Monday, creating a dam holding 15 to 20 million cubic meters of water, said Xing Hua, a Chengkou Water Resources Bureau spokesman.As of 5 a.m. Monday, the barrier lake was five-square-kilometers in area and 18-meters deep, said Xing.Photo taken on July 19, 2010 shows the Ciqikou Town surrounded by flood water of the Jialingjiang River, southwest China's Chongqing Municipality. CHENGDU, July 17 (Xinhua) -- At least 13 people were killed and 23 others remained missing after the worst rainstorm of this year lashed Sichuan Province Thursday night, the provincial flood control authorities said Saturday.The victims were killed by mountain torrents, landslides, house collapses or other rain-triggered disasters, according to Sichuan's flood control and drought relief headquarters.The rain forced the Shuangliu International Airport in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan, to close Friday, affecting more than 100 flights and at least 10,000 passengers.The rain stopped in Chengdu Saturday and the airport was working around the clock to handle a record 640 flight landings and takeoffs.Many Chinese regions have reported casualties and losses caused by the rain.Hubei Province has seen 59 people dead and four missing by Saturday since heavy rains began to hit many regions on July 3, which incurred 8.92 billion yuan in economic losses.Shaanxi Province has reported four deaths since Thursday when downpours began to hit 13 counties and forced the evacuation of 260 people.The Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River, China's longest, raised water discharge speed again Saturday to save dam space for another round of rainfall coming in two or three days.The Three Gorges navigation administration said Saturday that it will close the ship lock if the floods gush in at a speed of up to 45,000 cubic meters per second.At least 146 people had been confirmed dead and 40 are missing in continuous rainstorms and consequent floods, reportedly worst in years in some regions, according to the Civil Affairs Ministry.

BEIJING, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Food, clothing and shelter supplies for the mudslide-affected people in Zhouqu County in northwest China's Gansu Province are to be properly handled, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said Tuesday.The affected people will be helped by the government to reconstruct their homes, the ministry said in a statement.China's Ministry of Finance has allocated 500 million yuan (73 million U.S. dollars) for emergency aid to fund the relief efforts.The statement said the resettlement program will be carried out in three stages.The first stage of emergency aid is resettling the affected people in temporary shelters.The second stage is the stopgap resettlement of people in houses of relatives, friends, neighbors as well as rented houses and houses offered by the government.The third stage is reconstruction and the moving of people into their new homes.Efforts should be made to finish reconstruction of toppled houses before winter sets in, or no later than June 2011, the statement said, noting the repair of damaged houses shall be finished by November this year.The ministry will soon flesh out the resettlement program after learning further details of the disaster, an official at the Ministry of Civil Affairs said.The death toll from the massive rain-triggered mudslide in Zhouqu County has risen to 702, with 1,042 others still missing.Also on Tuesday, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said 7,000 tents, 21,400 cotton quilts, 5,000 folding beds and 5,000 sleeping bags had arrived in Zhouqu.Along with the shelter supplies, instant noodles, drinking water, generators, candles and flashlights have also arrived in the county, with more supplies en route.In addition, the State Administration of Radio Film and Television has transported 10,000 radios and 5,000 televisions and satellite dishes to the affected area to ensure local people know the latest information concerning the rescue and relief efforts.As of 6 p.m. Monday, the Red Cross Society of China and its local branches had offered relief funds and materials worth more than 6 million yuan (about 886,000 U.S. dollars).The organization has called for more donations, asking the public to log on to redcross.org.cn to donate, apart from donating through banks and post offices.The State Council, China's Cabinet, released a circular Tuesday calling for better coordination between local rescue and relief teams.The circular encouraged financial donations from the public for the organized procurement of supplies.It also urged people other than rescue and relief workers to not go to the disaster-hit county.
