SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — Jury deliberations have resumed in the trial of a Southern California man charged with killing a family of four and burying their bodies in the desert.Jurors last Thursday got the case brought by San Bernardino County prosecutors against 62-year-old Charles "Chase" Merritt. The jury was off Friday and deliberations started again Monday.Merritt's business associate Joseph McStay, McStay's wife Summer and the couple's 3- and 4-year-old sons vanished from their San Diego County home in 2010. Three years later, their bodies were found in shallow desert graves more than 100 miles (161 kilometers) away.Merritt was arrested in 2014. Authorities said they traced his cellphone to the gravesite area and to a call seeking to close McStay's online bookkeeping account. If Merritt is convicted, prosecutors will seek the death penalty. 869

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 52-year-old man was struck and gravely injured Sunday in a San Diego trailer park, and the motorist who hit him in a stolen Hummer was arrested. The incident began just after 11:10 a.m. when the San Diego police received a call from Chula Vista police who were involved in the pursuit of the stolen Hummer, SDPD Lt. Andra Brown said. The Hummer was snatched from a RoadOne impound yard in Chula Vista, SDPD Lt. Bryan Brecht told the media. The vehicle initially crashed at a gas station at 1400 Melrose Ave. in Chula Vista, but continued evading police south on Interstate 5, exiting into a trailer park at 1600 Palm Ave., Brown said.Officers tried to stop the driver but he sped away and hit the pedestrian, Brown said. It appeared the collision was intentional, Brown added. The 44-year-old driver was eventually taken into custody with help from a K-9 dog deployed to stop him, Brown said. The driver was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries before being taken into custody. His name was not immediately available. The victim suffered severe trauma and was unresponsive when paramedics transported him to a hospital, Brown said.Because of the severity of the pedestrian's injuries, the case was being investigated by the SDPD's homicide unit, she said.Anyone with information on this crash was asked to call the homicide unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 1417

SAN DIEGO — San Diego is playing a pivotal role as a testing ground for the future border wall while the region prepares for President Trump’s visit Tuesday.WHY SAN DIEGO?The region, specifically Otay Mesa, was selected as a location for the eight prototypes because of site accessibility to construct and the ability to evaluate the wall as part of a larger, existing border infrastructure system, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Ralph DeSio.San Diego County’s value as a construction site was detailed in a presentation made by the Department of Homeland Security and obtained by NPR.CBP officers can compare the performance of the prototypes to underperforming existing materials in the same location, according to the document. The prototypes can also be evaluated for the impact on operations in an existing enforcement zone. The land where the prototypes are constructed is federally owned, making the project more affordable. As far as the CBP is concerned, the proof of the border wall’s success is in the pudding. A video made by the agency showed an 87 percent reduction in arrests at the border after the creation of a physical barrier.FINANCIAL IMPACT OF THE BORDER WALLSan Diego had funds earmarked for border wall construction ahead of the prototype construction. The CBP allocated 9,000 to replace the primary fence and replace the secondary fence with a wall in the 2017 fiscal year.Despite the federal green light, the San Diego City Council formally opposed the project. The group voted to support Councilmember Georgette Gómez’s proposal to oppose the Border Wall Funding Act of 2017.In her resolution, Gómez cited a San Diego Association of Governments and Caltrans study on the economic impacts of border delays on the cross-border economy. The study found the effects of border crossing delays cost .2 billion in foregone gross output and more than 62,000 jobs in both the U.S. and Mexico economies in 2007."As a city that is invested in the binational economic development of our region, it is important to oppose the building of a wall and focus our resources in enhancing our border infrastructure to ease access of goods and people," Gómez wrote.“The border wall is a huge mistake for our region economically and environmentally. I am happy the City Council voted to pass my resolution. Our tax dollars should be spent uplifting the quality of life for all San Diegans, and tackling our issues on road infrastructure, housing, and homelessness,” she said. For the immediate neighbors of the border wall prototypes, the initial impact has been positive.Otay Pizza manager Wade Aljabi said he’s had an increase in business from CBP officers and construction workers. That might change tomorrow as President Trump’s visit leads to road closures just east of his location in a strip mall at SR-905 and Siempre Viva Rd.“We’ll be open 7 to 7,” Aljabi said. 2925

SAN DIEGO — Corinne Lam was in the middle of cutting a client's hair when her phone started blowing up.Governor Newsom had just announced that several businesses - including salons - had to cease indoor operations.“We're going back to square one. Do not pass go. Do not collect 0,” she said.Lam was especially frustrated because her client at the time had COPD, making her high risk for Covid-19. Yet she trusted Lam enough to still come to Rancho Bernardo’s Salotto Salon, which was reserved entirely for her.“And knowing that she feels as safe as she does here, it was otherwise maddening,” Lam said.Newsom announced the new round of shutdowns Monday - forcing gyms, salons, and malls to cease indoor operations in 30 counties - including San Diego. The order came after an increase in covid related hospitalizations, ICU beds, and positivity testing rates. It will last until the state’s Public Health Officer deems it safe to reopen.“It's incumbent upon all of us to recognize soberly that Covid-19 is not going away anytime soon,” Newsom said. The decision leaves Lam and other business owners wondering how they'll survive. Like her, many have already exhausted their Paycheck Protection Program funds that helped get them through the first shutdown.“It's like we're jumping into a pool with no water,” she said. “So who is going to supply the water? I don't know.”Lam may be able to move her haircuts outside, but it's complicated. Plus, the concrete's sweltering, especially with masks and gloves. 1514

SAN DIEGO — President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit San Diego on Tuesday to speak with military officials — and likely catch a glimpse at samples for his long-promised border wall.Trump has not visited California since he was sworn into office. Since then, he has criticized the state's enforcement of federal immigration laws and "sanctuary state" policies. The visit has been rumored for some time now and occurs a week after Attorney General Jeff Sessions visited Sacramento to announce a lawsuit against the state over immigration policies.Governor Jerry Brown said the lawsuit was the Trump administration's way of "going to war against the state of California."Here's what to expect:WHEN AND WHERE...President Trump is expected to fly to MCAS Miramar before heading to Otay Mesa on Tuesday, March 13.WHAT...While at MCAS Miramar, President Trump is set to speak with Marines. In Otay Mesa, Trump will likely tour the eight constructed border wall prototypes for his long-promised border wall. It's not clear whether the president will meet with Governor Jerry Brown, who sent a letter inviting Trump to the Central Valley to tour California's High-Speed Rail line under construction.PROTESTS...Demonstrators in support of and against the border wall are expected to gather in the allowed zones around the Otay Mesa prototype zone.A list of items will be prohibited by likely demonstrators during the presidential visit in Otay Mesa, including any object that could be used as a weapon. Sheriff's deputies will make anyone in possession of those items return them to their vehicles or dispose of them prior to entering the restricted area.An anti-wall rally is also scheduled to be held near the IRS federal building in downtown San Diego Tuesday. 1798
