JILIN, Jilin Province, July 29 (Xinhua) -- About 3,000 barrels filled with chemicals have been swept into a major river in northeast China's Jilin Province, thousands more than originally thought, authorities said Thursday.Another 4,000 empty barrels have also entered the river, officials said at a press conference Thursday morning.On Wednesday, authorities said around 1,000 barrels had entered the Songhuajiang River in Jilin City.Barrels were spotted in the river Wednesday, but it is not known when they entered the waterway.The barrels first entered the Wende River and then flowed into the Songhuajiang River, after floods hit the storage facilities of two chemical factories -- Jilin Xinyaqiang Biochem Co. Ltd. and Jilin Zhongxin Group.Each chemical-filled barrel contains about 170 kilograms of chemicals.Of the 3,000 chemical-filled barrels, about 2,500 barrels contain trimethyl chloro silicane -- a colorless flammable liquid with a pungent odor -- while 500 contain hexamethyl disilazane -- a colorless liquid with a pungent odor.Officials said emergency workers and soldiers are rushing to retrieve the barrels. Workers are collecting the barrels at eight points on the river. About 400 have been recovered so far.Seven stations have been established to monitor water contamination.

BEIJING, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Food, clothing and shelter supplies for the mudslide-affected people in Zhouqu County in northwest China's Gansu Province are to be properly handled, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said Tuesday.The affected people will be helped by the government to reconstruct their homes, the ministry said in a statement.China's Ministry of Finance has allocated 500 million yuan (73 million U.S. dollars) for emergency aid to fund the relief efforts.The statement said the resettlement program will be carried out in three stages.The first stage of emergency aid is resettling the affected people in temporary shelters.The second stage is the stopgap resettlement of people in houses of relatives, friends, neighbors as well as rented houses and houses offered by the government.The third stage is reconstruction and the moving of people into their new homes.Efforts should be made to finish reconstruction of toppled houses before winter sets in, or no later than June 2011, the statement said, noting the repair of damaged houses shall be finished by November this year.The ministry will soon flesh out the resettlement program after learning further details of the disaster, an official at the Ministry of Civil Affairs said.The death toll from the massive rain-triggered mudslide in Zhouqu County has risen to 702, with 1,042 others still missing.Also on Tuesday, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said 7,000 tents, 21,400 cotton quilts, 5,000 folding beds and 5,000 sleeping bags had arrived in Zhouqu.Along with the shelter supplies, instant noodles, drinking water, generators, candles and flashlights have also arrived in the county, with more supplies en route.In addition, the State Administration of Radio Film and Television has transported 10,000 radios and 5,000 televisions and satellite dishes to the affected area to ensure local people know the latest information concerning the rescue and relief efforts.As of 6 p.m. Monday, the Red Cross Society of China and its local branches had offered relief funds and materials worth more than 6 million yuan (about 886,000 U.S. dollars).The organization has called for more donations, asking the public to log on to redcross.org.cn to donate, apart from donating through banks and post offices.The State Council, China's Cabinet, released a circular Tuesday calling for better coordination between local rescue and relief teams.The circular encouraged financial donations from the public for the organized procurement of supplies.It also urged people other than rescue and relief workers to not go to the disaster-hit county.

X The statement has also encouraged the settlement of the outstanding issues on the Korean Peninsula by peaceful means and the resumption of direct dialogues and negotiations between the DPRK and the ROK, Qin said."We hope the involved parties continue to maintain calm and restraint, and take this opportunity to flip over the page of the Cheonan incident as soon as possible. ROME, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- The recovering of poplar forests in Siyang County in Eastern China's Jiangsu Province is benefiting rural life and agricultural activities, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said on Wednesday.Thanks to a joint program launched more than 30 years ago by the Rome-based agency and Italian plant research labs, new poplar forests have extended from 7 percent to 47 percent and are now covering more than 100,000 hectares of the county's land area.Today the poplar forests play a crucial role in restoring marginal flood plains and stabilizing the river banks. Large swaths of planted poplar trees now protect fields once ravaged by floods, wind, sandstorms and soil erosion, giving boost to agricultural production and benefiting 1 million farmers living in the county.According to the FAO, the Siyang case is an outstanding example of countryside reinforcement triggered by the successful application of the international transfer of germplasm, scientific knowledge and technology."Poplars are very fast-growing and amazingly resilient," said Jim Carle, leader of the Forestry Management Team at FAO. "They can grow in many sorts of ways and can easily integrate with other land uses, making them ideal for supporting animal husbandry, agriculture, aquaculture, viticulture and horticulture," he added.Some of the services provided by these multi-purpose trees include furnishing material for shelter, shade and dwellings, protecting crops and supplying fodder for livestock, as well as offering viable sources of bio-energy.Since the launch of the program the FAO has engaged Siyang farmers and smallholders in new income generating activities.
