(KGTV) -- Authorities announced that a missing Los Angeles mother and her three children were safely located at the San Ysidro Port of Entry in south San Diego County.The young family disappeared from their home in Sylmar on Oct. 9, according to authorities.Liliana Lopez's three children, who were also missing since Oct. 9, were found when they entered the U.S. from Mexico at the border crossing.Los Angeles police detectives were interviewing Lopez to determine the circumstances of her and her children's disappearance.A man who was identified as a possible suspect in their kidnapping, Esteban Lopez, is believed to be still in Mexico, according to authorities.Police were called to the 13600 block of Fellows Avenue at 9:27 p.m. on Oct. 9 and found that a possible kidnapping had occurred. Police continued to search for them even as the Saddleridge Fire started up the next day and raged throughout the area.Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact LAPD Det. Ten journalists were among 31 people killed in a series of attacks in Afghanistan on Monday, including a BBC reporter and a well-known photographer who had written of the dangers of reporting in the Afghan capital.Nine journalists were killed in suicide bombings in the capital, Kabul. Shah Marai of Agence France Presse was among a group of journalists who died when a bomber disguised as a TV cameraman detonated a second bomb at the site of an earlier explosion. Support is growing for early voting, but there's still a lot of distrust for voting by mail.Just over 3 in 10 people say they're very confident their vote will be counted accurately if they vote by mail. Nearly 7 in 10 say the same thing about voting in person on Election Day. That's according to a new poll from the University of Maryland and The Washington Post.There's a big racial disparity in perceptions about election integrity. About 71% of Black Americans in the poll say it’s easier for white Americans to vote, while only 34% of white Americans believe that's the case.“There's a historic trend of distrust in government amongst racial and ethnic minorities,” said Jonathan Collins, education and political science assistant professor at Brown University. “And instances like this during the need to transition to mail-in voting. This is where that distrust really kind of rears its head.Collins studies ethnic minority political behavior. He says campaigns from state attorneys would be helpful to reassure people their mail-in ballots will be counted properly.The U.S. Postal Service is trying to educate people on its role in the mail-in voting process with TV ads. It says the nonpartisan campaign neither encourages nor discourages mail-in voting. Collins expects a lot of African Americans are still going to prefer in-person voting.“There is this sense of pride that you get from showing up to your precinct, to your polling station on Election Day and in-person casing your vote. There's a pride of wearing the 'I voted' sticker around for your friends and our family and your coworkers to see. How do we replicate that feeling of pride?”About 6 in 10 registered voters nationwide say they want to cast their ballot before Election Day. Compare that to 2016, when about 4 in 10 people cast ballots early.For mail-in voters worried about their vote not counting, many states allow residents to track their ballot. Stores across the country are starting to advertise and display back-to-school sales. From electronics to clothes, the National Retail Federation is tracking buying trends as the new school year approaches."Parents may not know how their children are attending classes, whether it’s in-person or online, a mix, and that is certainly reflected in how people are shopping right now. So, when we did our study in early July most consumers did not know what they needed to buy yet," said Katherine Cullen, the Senior Director for Industry and Consumer Insights at the National Retail Federation. She says there's a lot of uncertainty surrounding the upcoming school year and most consumers are hesitant to buy back to school supplies right now, but many already have plans to spend more."For grade school and high school shoppers it is over 0 on average which is about 0 more than last year. So, some of that is definitely being driven by this current environment and it's shaping how people are planning to buy right now," said Cullen. Cullen says consumers will likely spend more than last year on school supplies and just as much on new clothes. She said there are some things kids need no matter where they learn. "Kids keep growing even if they're not going to school in person, they will likely still need some new items."But the big ticket items families will be spending money on is electronics. "We are certainly seeing that many families, over half, are expecting there will be at least some online learning component and as a result they're planning to make some extra purchases around that: laptops, computers, head phones and speakers are a big component of that," said Cullen.The National Retail Federation says grade school and high school shoppers plan to spend more on average on electronics. Amy Cunningham, a parent in South Carolina, says her family decided to purchase two laptops to help their children with online remote learning this fall. This past spring, the children shared their parents' computers. "Having to juggle the kids’ distance learning with what we were doing was hard so we knew if we were going to do it this year, which was our plan, that we were going to need to get additional laptops," said Cunningham. Cunningham says she likely won't need many other school supplies and doesn't anticipate needing to buy new clothes for the school year."I’d probably get notebooks and stuff like that just because we don’t have a lot of that sitting around. Clothes, no. They live in their play clothes at home now so there’s no point really," says Cunningham.As for how parents will be back-to-school shopping this year, for many, gone are the days of traditional in-store browsing.
